The Hyundai i30 N, the brand’s first Golf GTI rival, has been teased in a new video released online.

With commentary by Thierry Neuville, one of Hyundai Motorsports’ WRC drivers, we can see a prototype of the i30 N sliding around an icy test track during extreme cold weather testing in Arjeplog, Sweden.

While styling details, except for maybe the larger rear wing, are hard to see through the layers of camouflage, we do get to hear the turbocharged engine do its thing.

As CarAdvice revealed last month, the i30 N will be offered in standard trim with a 186kW (250hp) engine, while the more expensive higher performance variant will receive a retuned version of the engine with 205kW (275hp).

In addition to more power, the higher priced model will also feature a firmer suspension setup. Both cars will initially be available solely with a six-speed manual. An eight-speed dual-clutch transmission isn’t due to come online until 2019.

Both variants will have redesigned front and rear fascias, low profile tyres, lowered suspension, reworked side sills, quad exhaust tips, more heavily bolstered seats, and plenty of N badging.

If the look appeals to you, but the power really isn’t necessary or is beyond your means, Hyundai will offer a N package for regular i30 models featuring most of i30 N’s style-focussed accoutrements.

The global launch shouldn’t be too far away, as we’re expected to receive the i30 N, in both guises, by the end of 2017.
