Commodore’s Pontiac option

By Matt Brogan |

Holden offered a special edition Commodore with the Pontiac’s signature twin-snout grill last year, and because of a high demand the former G8 body will join the line-up permanently.

After parent company General Motors dumped the Pontiac brand the Commodore SS V-Series Special Edition was made to clear the excess stock of the Pontiac fascia. Since the special edition has been so popular Holden has decided to make the body kit a $1000 premium over the regular SS V-Series.

GM announced that the body style will join the Commodore line-up through to the end of its current cycle. The body kit comes with both front and rear styling known to Americans as the Pontiac G8 and will be available in sedan, wagon and ute.

It has been popular in Australia to re-badge Commodores with other General Motor’s brands like Chevrolet and Pontiac.

  • Philthy

I reckon they should put the Pontiac badge on their too.

    • Deco

I heard holden dealers are arrnaging with Holden to import Pontiac badges for customers who want them.

      • Marcoz

if bought one their is no way in hell i would put a pontiac BADGE on it….its a holden, not a chevy not a pontic not a saab….a holden

        built in oz…..full stop…

  • Gazza

This says to me that a lot of commodore customers are after something different from the standard. Too many getting around looking the same.

    • David T

What it says to me is that they are still a long way short of clearing old stock of the defunct Pontiac components, and that a possible Chev version will get a different look.

      • David

The possible Chev version would likely be based on the updated VF? Commodore, which is expected to deliver a new look sometime later this year.

        • Andrew

          no its not!
          it looks completely different?
there releasing probably halfway through this year!

          • David

Halfway through, some time later – same thing!

A re-styled Commodore will be here before any US-market Chev version is built. If/when that US-market Chev version is built, it’s likely to be based on the re-styled (VF?) Commodore.

    • Mitch

If you want something different, dont buy a commodore

  • poohbear

Good that it’s being kept as an option – I reckon the Pontiac front suits the VE

  • http://www.caradvice.com.au OSU811

haha, this would of been holdens plan all along!!!! but decided to scam some people into thinking it was a limited edition to charge full price and make some good money out of them, and clear some old stock parts before releasing them as a std fitment!!

    • Andrew

      OSU811,

Read the article they are not standard fitment they carry a $1000 premium, and i’m pretty sure that the special edition did aswell.

So Holden scammed nobody, similar to the Commodore International, its proving so popular its still being made and sold even though it was a special edition aswell.

      • http://www.caradvice.com.au OSU811

well Andrew how come, I knew nearly 2 months ago from and insider (wont mention),
that it was going to become a std production line model from March production this year!!, because it was always planned that way thats how!

        • red.

          OSU811

          Your WRONG.
they only recently decided to sell it to the Australian market as they had so many of those parts left over from the American model.
The only reason they are making it permanent now is because of the success its had here in Australia and they obviously still had enough left over to make it permanent…
so pretty much they are getting rid of old stock!

          • Andrew

            Agreed.

            OSU811,

I love these secrete unmentionable sources that people use to prove thier point . . .

    • Trump

Holden should start outsourcing their PR dept to make extra coin on the side. The best yet at spinning garbage to the public.

  • Evolution

The gullible will pay money for excess parts that should have gone to the tip when the exports collapsed. Stupid Holden punters.

  • BFSTORM

Looks like something from Supercheap Auto. I reckon Chief Bogan, looking down from Bogan Mountain would see one of these and say “Thats a bit over the top”
Only for those with Brocky tatts on their face Id say.

  • Carl

I’ve noticed there are no photos of the interior???? While the Commodore’s interiors are a bit nasty to us and most of the rest of the world I’m sure the Yanks will lap them up as “world class” LOL

    • o

they did when it was on sale lol

    • yoyo

at least the interior’s better than bmw 3 series

      • Minnow

        of 20 years ago?

      • MUSE

Hahaha how do you figure this??? Have you compared the two lately!!!!?? Commo Interior’s not exactly classy or robust looking… But it does the job for it’s pricepoint.

  • Andronicus

Why do people re-badge them I have no idea. When ever I see that done just makes me think what an idiot the driver must be.
Why dont they rebadge them with a Daewoo logo? any epica or cruze buyers going to take up that option…idiots.

    • Matt

They do it so you can tell from a distance that they are tools lol

  • Shak

Have you all heard that local Cruze production has been delayed till next year March. The sedan would have started first and then followed by the hatch in March, but Holden say it is easier to release them both at once, because once employees ome back from Christmas, they dont want to have to train them again for the hatch, when they already have knowledge of the Sedan from before Christmas. So they say they will release them both at once.

    • Matt

Or perhaps the strong Aussie dollar has them second guessing?

  • Valet Dabess

i’ve already said this a bazillion times on this website. car makers should give you the option of sevral body kits for their models

  • Paul

I’m a conservative Lancer driver, but I think it looks good.

Though its an American style, I think it looks much better than the standard holden front ends, which all look unappealing.

  • Car Enthusiast

Good move Holden. I’ve seen some of the Special edition SSV’s on the road and ill tell u, they look pretty darn good, The pontiac style kit stands out instantly, and I love the rear of the car, with the lip spoiler

  • Baddass

Surely it is not worth $1000 extra from a manufacturer’s point of view? A pretty big mark-up I’d say.

  • nemo

I feel for those who paid retail to get what they thought would be a genuine ‘limited edition’ Commodore

  • Byron

A very nice car indeed. Like the exterior alot & it’s good for someone who wants a different look. Everything is going Holden’s way. Sucked in Ford. As much as they try they can never bring out something better than Commodore.Haha. Go Holden!

Anyone know when VF Commodore is due & any details on it? I heard its going to look quite different & new plastic colours in the interior. Calais/Calais-v & SS-V Centre console screen will be moved up to where Omega model has it. Anyone know more???

    • Matt

Actually things are going Ford’s way globally

    • JEKYL & HYDE

      bryon,

      i’ve heard that too(lcd screen).new wheels.lightweight panels(fibreglass,aluminum?)new f and r spoilers.hope they put a usb point in too,like cruze,captiva…

      • BFSTORM

I have heard there will be extensive use of lightweight materials on the VF update 90-130kg saving. Big economy improvements with this model

  • nice

never been a fan of commodores until i saw a red pontiac g8 in niagara falls (canadian side) last month now i’m thinking of trading-in my 07 maxima

    • Falcodore

You’d better decide fast, they’re nearly all gone!

      • Andrew M

Actually Falcadore, this article is saying the pontiac front end will be an extended offer……

I reckon the reason they would be selling well is that the Holden buying public will be embracing this as the facelift they never got

        • Bent 8 Brigade

Yes, or…maybe the public simply find the vehicle appealing.
If I had enough coin i’d splash on a blue SSV G8, or maybe red haha

          cheers

          • Andrew M

Isnt that what I just said bent dude??

Yes, they find it appealing, for the reason I stated.
You must admitt it is good to see a fresh front end on it, hence why I reckon numbers would have been taken.

No different to the sales response from any other traditional model facelift

  • Andrew McK

Falcodore is right if you want a G8 you better hurry. I had a lot of Sydney Holden dealers looking for a black G8 for me and have been told by several it is harder and harder to get and they cant source one. I have started now looking interstate. Fingers crossed I find one soon.

  • Lrules364

Well, this is amazing news for people in the US. I have been wanting one of these since i first seen the concept. its goin to have the 361hp full package and everything when i order it. I cannot wait!!! It is going to be the only one around!!!

  • DavidK

This article is not correct. I paid my deposit for a black G8 last week and the dealer told me they had a bulletin released by Holden that said the G8 will end production at the end of March. It is still a limited edition.
