Hyundai Australia celebrates best-ever yearly sales results

By Matt Brogan |

Final results for 2009 saw Hyundai post its best-ever annual result since the brand was introduced to Australia back in 1986.

Hyundai sales grew to 63,207 units, an increase of 39.2 per cent over 2008, making the brand the clear winner in the 2009 sales race and following 12 consecutive months of year-on-year growth.

The result was all the more remarkable for the fact it was achieved in a market that contracted by 7.4 per cent compared to the previous year, with 937,328 cars registered during 2009.

“HMCA’s results are at the forefront of what has been an outstandingly successful year for the brand globally,” said Mr Damien Meredith, Director of Sales Hyundai Motor Company Australia.

“2010 promises to be another exciting year as Hyundai consolidates its presence with the arrival of the all-new ix35 compact SUV next month, with plenty more to follow.”

Best model results were i30 reporting over 21,400 units sold, a 109.9 per cent increase on 2008, the Tucson with 11,405 units, an 85.7 per cent increase on 2008, and for the second year running Getz took top ranking in its segment with 19,643 units sold in the period January-December 2009.

I’m not at all surprised. This company is going ahead in leaps and bounds. They have lstened to what the market wants and are responding to it. As more Australian’s realise just how good hyundai’s vehicles are they will start importing their more upmarket (read larger) cars and things will get really interesting.

The Koreans are going to become a major force or rather “the major force” in global markets in coming years. Toyota know it already. The new Sonata this year will start to reign in the Camry world wide and pinch more of its market share . Much cheaper and with a new and far superior powerplant plus a fantastic diesel.

Watch the sales growth of this car and take note. Hyundai will achieve similar in every single segment. i20 and i10 will further dominate the micro and small classes. ix35 will shoot to number one in it’s segment due to great styling and again price.

Hyundai deserve their success. They seem to have a real passion for their vehicles rather than just viewing them as a mode of transport like “play safe toyota” do. Every time they bring out a new model it well exceeds the one it replaces. When was the last time that happened with the camry or corolla and let’s be honest, they aren’t that great to start with?

God help toyota (and the rest of them) if Hyundai get serious about light commercials.

agreed that hyundai are making better cars these days and its one reason for their growth, but lets be objective in what was a very tough year for car manufacturers, the obvious tendacy for buyers is to downgrade their choice of new vehicle purchase. be it cheaper, lower quality (eg, less luxuries) or both. there is obviously still alot of buyers, this can be seen by end of year sales (tentative financial crisis over) and couple the EFC with high petrol costs, and you can see why small cars are selling so well, corrolla, mazda 3, i30 etcetc. where hyundai have done well is by stroke of luck having a raft of new & improved models launching before the EFC, they would have sold well without the EFC but the EFC would work in hyundais favour.

and lets be honest, its not hard to drastically improve you product when you see their previous models, and really they are only just getting up to the level of toyotas and the rest of the market. the i30 still isnt up to its competitors when comparing materials, styling, motors or drivability, but it does do a great job on price, and i guess if thats how people judge a car so be it.

      they already do light commercials

Thanks for the link, great read on Hyundai. We have been a toyota family but I recommended an I30 over a Corolla to my Aunty and she is very happy with it.

Hyundai’s market share is only likely to increase particularly when the RWD 300hp V6 Genesis Coupe finally arrives in Australia.. What Toyo-baru?

    • Brad

Any idea when that is supposed to be?

When the market is ready to pay AU$60000+ for one.

Finally! Hyundai’s finally making good cars! I’m Korean, so for so long, I was embarrassed about how Hyundai’s used to be.

Hyundai is a superior product, and the next 2-5 years Hyundai will be the preeminent player in the Global near Luxury market. Hyunda is easily taking Chrysler’s place in the US market, and American Hyundais from the Accent to the Genesis are better than their Chrysler counterparts in Every Way.
