Forget a hybrid, ditch the dog

By Alborz Fallah |

Although we see cars being compared to other cars, bikes, planes and other sorts of transport, a book written in New Zealand has revealed that dogs and cats use up more energy resources in a year than driving a car.

So forget about buying that Prius, just ditch the dog… maybe not. Researchers found that keeping a relatively average-sized dog can have a similar ecological impact as driving 10,000km a year in a big SUV.

According to the book Time to Eat the Dog: The Real Guide to Sustainable Living, New Zealand-based architects Robert and Brenda Vale worked out that an average dog goes through about 164kg of meat and 95kg of cereals a year, they then applied lots of complicated methods (which we know you don’t really want to read) to work out how much of an ecological footprint cats and dogs make based on the amount of land needed to grow common brands of pet food.

“We’re not actually saying it is time to eat the dog. We’re just saying that we need to think about and know the (ecological) impact of some of the things we do and that we take for granted.” The author said.

Apparently driving a popular SUV for a year requires around 0.41 hectares of land, at the same time growing and manufacturing a single dog’s food takes about 0.84 ha, although if you own a bigger dog, say a German shepherd, it’ll be around 1.1 ha.

Cat lovers don’t need to rejoice, although given their smaller size the results are more favourable, an average cat’s eco-footprint is still around 0.15 ha, which is just under the resources a brand new Volkswagen Golf would need during the same period.

Australians would be proud to know that the ecological footprint of an average human in a country such as hours is 6ha, whilst those in the developing world use about 1.8ha.

So the next time someone tells you to take that V8 home and think of the planet, perhaps it will be worth telling them their two poodles in the back seat use more energy resources!

Nonetheless we are still somewhat undecided as to whether the book’s methods are scientifically solid.

The book description reads:

The world and its resources are finite, yet we are seemingly locked into a system based on growth: growth of population, growth of income and growth of consumption. From this irrefutable starting point, Time to Eat the Dog? attempts to uncover what sustainability really means. Brenda and Robert Vale explore the environmental impact of the decisions we make, from what we eat and what we wear to how we travel and enjoy ourselves. Their book will make you see your life and your place in the world in a completely new light. Challenging the orthodoxies that underpin our entire economic system, this is one subversive read.

Would you ditch your dog to save the planet?

My beagles have this annoying habit of eating their own poo. I can’t train it out of them. At least they are doing their bit do offset the awful damage they are doing to our environment.

    • Mal

oops I meant “to” not “do”

    • Deco

      lol.

    • Minnow

      HAHAHA!!!

Gold, I didn’t think there was a way to link beagles eating poo, to saving the planet.

    • Reckless1

I’ll bet you love it when they lick your face straight afterwards.

  • Motorhead

Well can I claim now that having a cat rather then a dog offsets my V8?

  • lazybones

Cats have to be worse for the environment. Like most dog lovers I burn at least 25% more fuel in my SUV attempting to run over cats :)

So are we going to see ADR labels stuck on pets of the future? And what about the energy saving from not having to vaccum the floor after breakfast/lunch/dinner because the dog has already cleaned up? not to mention you don’t waste any food scraps with a dog.

    • ScritchyClaws

I Wonder how much extra CO2 I contribute every time I reverse over a dog I’ve just run over to put it out of its misery? hmmm

      • Simon

        You greenie you!
As much of a contribution as that may be, its not as much fun as running over a cat.

  • Jamison

    Its stupid study.

Dogs/Cats… Pets in general are for the personal needs of the owner.
These pets as much as they cost extra to the owner(s), they bring intangibles such as joy, calm, laughter and other “good” things to offset the daily stress everyone experience.

Its like saying, give up entertainment to save cost.

Im no pet-enthusiasts, but clearly anyone with a heart can see the good things they bring.

Cars, yes sure they bring excitement but cars are materials in the end, the driving excitement they give is in the end… a form of entertainment.

    • Car Fanatic

I notice these New Zealanders deliberately left sheep out of their study! Hmmmm, not wanting to upset the loved ones huh?

      • lazybones

Interesting point, my dog is a border collie. She’s such an intelligent dog that she actually drives me to work. Its all perfectly safe until she see a sheep.

    • ManualsOnly

On this website I think what you meant to say was:

These CARS, as much as they cost extra to the owner(s), they bring intangibles such as joy, calm, laughter and other “good” things to offset the daily stress everyone experience. Love taking my car for a blast on a nearby mountain road here in the ACT.

Well fed pets while there are millions of starving people in the world is a sign of an indifferent and obscene society. I hope all pet owners give as much to Aid organisations as they spend on their pets to offset their conscience.

      • RdS

i totally agree with you, but this part:

“Well fed pets while there are millions of starving people in the world is a sign of an indifferent and obscene society. I hope all pet owners give as much to Aid organisations as they spend on their pets to offset their conscience.”

i have 3 cars while there are plenty of people with none. if someone wants a pet for their own enjoyment, thats fine. its not their responsibility to take care of people who cant take care of themselves.

        • The Original Stevo

At least my pets are neutered. If these aid organizations really wanted to help they would do the same to the worlds starving.

    • Flying High

Right. On that basis Jamison, it is not a stupid study, because if you are going to bring intangibles into it, then you also have to bring in the intangible pleasure of owning, driving and listening to a thumping V8, or the excitement of serious seat suck when a high pressure turbo kicks in…

      • Jamison

        Still a stupid study.

As they disregard life for money.

        As someone stated.

Might as well not have kids…
because there was another study that showed it cost $750,000 to raise a child from the day they are born to their 18th birthday.

WOW, we could all be driving Ferrari Enzos if we dont choose to have children… 18 years worth of cost savings!!

So in the end its a stupid study… because I can write.. or anyone for that matter, write “study reports” that show how to save money.

How about not eating meat for the rest of our lives and just eat cheaper alternatives such as vegies and fruit… etc

And whats my statement/opinion of cars relate to my thoughts that the study was stupid?

I already said that cars, although materials, lifeless, they do “entertain” us, they bring intangibles as much as pets. Just that Pets are biological, they show compassion and attachment to their owners, cars do not.

  • Neo Utopia

I wonder how a small (30 litre) aquarium with a maximum 0.0515 kw/hour compare with driving a 10 year old small sports car for 10,000 a year, the pets would then win and the person could still have both entertaining enjoyments!

    • Safety Frist

Yes but it is very uncomfortable cuddling you aquarium at night, and fish are down right useless when it comes to catching Frisbees…. I went through a whole school of goldfish trying to find one with a bit of co-ordination :p

  • Jon Leong

Okay… But Let me put this another way,
I am sure an average human being use up more energy resources in a year than driving a car,
Does that mean we should go out and Kill others to offset our V8′s??
Or should We Ditch our wife and Children??
Or should We all Just kill our selves??
Or should we all Just Go kill the Kiwi and their sheep??

    Yeah Option 4 sounds reasonable…

    • Car Fanatic

Good point, we could argue like this all day or we can just accept the fact these Kiwis who wrote the book only did it for the publicity.

    • http://BMW Buck

Option four is a bit harsh buddy. Face it, there are complete idiots on both sides of the Tasman, just have a look at some of the resident Skoda salesmans comments, can someone put this Dill / Will vested interest sales idiot out for the count and do everyone a favour !

Now that really would be saving the planet.

      • 4:20 All Day

        ^This!

    • shutupfool

Or kill yourself and we can avoid your tripe!

  • Takamine

Ditching the dog won’t solve the inherit problem. Try changing this topic to a human being instead and see how much 1 more person born to this world will have an effect on how much hectare of lands is required.

“We’re not actually saying it is time to eat the dog. We’re just saying that we need to think about and know the (ecological) impact of some of the things we do and that we take for granted.”

So, what are you saying exactly? That we should be made to feel guilty for owning a dog, but don’t get rid of it? God I hate studies like this! They give you pointless information that makes the reader feel guilty for living a normal life! I wonder the amount of greenhouse gasses are emitted by a laboratory full of ‘researchers’. I say, leave the Patrol, Rover and Mittens, and think about what use the researchers are serving the public.

P.S: People of CarAdvice, you are just as bad! Why do you post this, when the vast majority of your viewers want to read actual car news? Leave out the surveys and researches and bring more comparos and news of exotics!

  • cheesy

Prius drivers waste more energy because they are wusses and sleep with the light on…

  • Andrew M

I dont know that this book strives to rid the world of the most polluting objects, I think it is more to get us to evaluate the world we live in a little more and put it all into perspective.

To me, I view the situation of trying to get rid of cars (or at least their emissions) not really worth while.
Ive seen similar studies many times before, and it always seems like vehicle emissions are far from having any significant impact on our environment.

In other words there is bigger things to worry about than cars and their environmental impact.

Ill even put a dollar down that the energy consumed in developing lower emission cars far outweighs the tail pipe emission savings

Who are you trying to impress with that????
I live my life for me, and you can bet your bottom dollar that noone in another country has a thought for how im coping either.
Sure I do give to charities every now and then, but to suggest that for every dollar I spend on a member of my family I should also be sending to a foreign country is rediculous.

Oh and is that share of money I should be sending overseas an equal amount before or after the “Aid Organisation” takes their cut???

  • VJ

What about Humans? Let’s eat them. We actually contribute the largest ecological footprint, so let’s get rid of Humans.

    • Car Fanatic

I think you’ll find cows havea bigger foot print than us, but hey we are overpopulated anyway, let’s cull some of the larger populations in the world.

      • Andrew M

what do you think wars are for???

it is documented they are a form of population control, no one likes to refer to them as that though…………

  • Kot Max

what sort of bs is that? to save a planet just stop eat the beef – one cow produces a huge amount of CO2 and methane during its lifespan.
