As part of the company’s ongoing centenary celebrations, a new BMW 2002 Hommage concept will be unveiled at the 2016 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este.

The latest Hommage concept pays tribute to the 02 Series, which was launched 50 years ago and is widely credited for kickstarting BMW’s rise to the top of the global luxury car market.

As its name suggests, the 2002 Hommage is a tribute to the 2002 Turbo. Launched in 1973, the 2002 Turbo was powered by a fuel-injected 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with 127kW of power and 240Nm of torque. No word, though, on what’s under the bonnet of the 2002 Hommage.

Based, it seems, on the new BMW M2, the 2002 Hommage ditches (most of) the donor vehicle’s soft curves for hard edges and sharp creases.

Like the 02 Series, the 2002 Hommage has a raised ridge down the centre of the bonnet. Up front, a modern twin-kidney grille is flanked by black plastic highlights and single headlight units with gold reflectors to mark the 50th birthday of the 02 Series.

Below there’s a large lower air intake with ‘turbo’ lettering drawn in reverse, while the lower section of the front bumper juts out further than Jay Leno’s chin.

As a tribute to the 02 Series’ chrome band along its shoulder line, the 2002 Hommage has a carbon-fibre accent strip in a similar position. The Hommage’s subtly flared fenders are the company’s modern interpretation of 2002 Turbo’s wheel arch extensions.

At the back, the 2002 Hommage has smoked rectangular tail-lights, a carbonfibre diffuser housing four exhaust tips, and a prominent lip spoiler integrated into the boot lid.

The 2002 Hommage rides on 20-inch alloy wheels, and stopping power comes courtesy of gold painted brake callipers.

And, as you can no doubt guess: there are no plans to put this one into series production.
