Overnight, the Hyundai Avante Sport was launched in South Korea. The heated up sedan will serve as the basis of the Hyundai Elantra SR, which will go on sale locally from August or September 2016.
Under the bonnet, the Avante Sport, which will be known as the Elantra Sport in other markets, has a 1.6-litre turbocharged direct-injection four-cylinder engine with 152kW of power and 265Nm of torque. This motor, shared with the Veloster, drives the front wheels via a paddle shift seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
The Avante Sport rides on 18-inch alloy wheels, while the regular car’s torsion beam rear axle is replaced by a multi-link setup and the car sits 18mm closer to the ground.
Other changes include “high capacity” front disc brakes, speed-sensitive electric power steering, and a retuned muffler with a sportier note and dual exhaust tips.
Up front, the Avante Sport features new headlight internals, as well as a redesigned front bumper with a black-framed grille, large faux air intakes, and LED driving lights. At the rear, the bumper has been given a more aggressive look complete with a diffuser-style element.
On the inside, the Avante Sport features grippier set of front seats, a flat-bottomed steering wheel, sports pedals, and a reworked instrument cluster.
In South Korea, there’s an Extreme Selection variant that includes a rear spoiler, sport-tuned stabiliser bars and suspension, and lightweight 18-inch alloy wheels.
In February, CarAdvice learnt that Hyundai’s local arm will begin selling a hotted up version of the Elantra from around August 2016. To be known in Australia as the Elantra SR, the car will be based on the Avante Sport, but will feature locally tuned suspension and driving dynamics.
