Legend Reborn - The New AE86
The cult classic Toyota AE86 will be making a come back to Toyota’s production line - at least internationally for the moment.
The front-engined, rear-wheel drive Corolla AE86 rose to fame as the car of choice for drifters as well as in the popular anime Initial D.
Whilst Lexus is soon to be releasing the IS-F and LF-A, the new model AE86 will represent Toyota’s first true sports car since the Supra.
The drivetrain (RWD, ofcourse) will be sourced from Subaru and initial reports suggest it will be powered by a 1.5L 2NZ-FE engine. Now whilst a 1.5L may not sound impressive, with a target weight under 1,000kg and the original AE86 developing 97kW back in the 1980’s, the performance is sure to be surprising.
Current impressions of the dimensions place it at under 4m long, 1.7m wide and 1.35m high.

It’ll be interesting to see if they can hit that target weight. Theyre basically building something the size of the new Mini, which is around the 1050kg mark. It’ll be a wasted opportunity also to go with a 1.5L unless its forced induction. If its supposed to be Toyota’s next sports car, why not put something like a development of the Celica engine, which was putting out 140kw/1.8L

I remember seeing this in a previous issue of road and track mag. The rear end styling is different but will probably be accepted to say the least, but the front end has a sporty mazda feel to it. Good luck toyota, and welcome back to making real cars LOL. Paul is gona love this, fuel efficient, safe, reliable, and fast!!!!!

I’d keep an eye on http://7Tune.com as well guys, they had this news quite a while ago. They’ve got a guy on the ground in Japan, tends to get his hands on some pretty juicy articles! :)

Hopefully this is a return to form for toyota, personally i think theyve taken the safe and reliable image too far, sure it sells cars but christ the brand has no passion, the whole current toyota experience has the pizazz of an RTA office.

It also had pretty red mags :)

Sorry to say, but I prefer for Toyota to keep the trademark for exterior and design. This new design look a bit “fat” than previous. Hopefully Toyota will make another design that makes us think that the new AE86 is related to old AE86 and the performance are top-notch to compare with 350Z or any other NA car(Just my opinion).

This car is a lot uglier and fatter than the Trueno. 1000kg is 2200lbs. Way too heavey for a 1.5/. Toyota needs to bring back the Real Trueno AE86 the way Ford brought back the Mustang. Yet keep the weight under 2000lbs with a 2.0 200hp Inline four from the older Altezza; and still rear wheel drive. Toyota needs to make this car Really simple containing less gidgets and gadgets and more quality in the basic parts. If they have a hybrid model available as well, everybody will buy it; Drifters, Youngsters, Track racers, Economists, Old people, ect.

a 2.0 litre and under 1000kg!!?? unless the car has no interior thats impossible, i had a 1990 corolla SX which was just over 1000kg and a 1.6 100kw, and that wasnt slow at all

100Kw is 140 hp and that is SLOW extremly SLOW compared to what cars can do today. And by the way the Altezza engine does not weigh that much more than the (4AGE) engine look it up buddy; then come talk to me. Get ur facts straight before you assume .5 litre (not refering to the 4AGE but the piece of shit they’re planning on putting in it) displacement increase will add an extra 200 lbs; more like 20lbs. The weight difference between a 4 cylinder tacoma and a 6 cylinder tacoma in the same shell is not even 50 lbs.
(Report)
November 7th, 2007 at 7:12 pm
it also depends on the engine, the tacoma was just an example. It depends what the components are made of, not how big the motor is. For example: Last time I checked from a valid source, the SR20DET from the Nissan Sylvia S15 weighs 30 some odd pounds more than the RB26DETT Skyline motor. Keep in mind we are comparing a 2.0 litre I-4 to a 2.6 Litre I-6. Don’t ask me why but I do know; just except the fact that engine size means shit to weight. (This statement does not imply to all engines just certain ones)Altezza being one of them.

The original Jap spec (4AGE equipped) AE86 was only 88kw,
The later small port 4AGE in the AE92 sx corolla was 100kw. Meanwhile, the Aus spec Sprinter had a POS 1.6 carburetted 4A-C with a non-crossflow head. It wheezed out upto 60 whole kilowatts on a good day.
Just spare a thought for the poor US/UK guys who had the SR-5 model, same carb and non crossflowed head, but only 1.5L!

I hope that 1.5L 2NZ-FE engine is only for the SR5 or SR version. As the clasic AE86 i hope there is a GT/GT-S GT-Apex etc.. versión. A 4age 20V black top would be a suitable engine as its a N/A 1.6 with 165 hp. “really like that engine, i have it in my 1985 levin, i achieved to get 189 hp with haltech, toda cams haader etc… There are some rumours that yamaha will take out a new generation of ( g )sport engines. I hope this rumour is true and a good engine can be placed in the new AE86. That 1.5L 2NZ-FE is the Yaris or Vitz engine, useless.

After reading all comments i understand where some are coming from…..i currently drive an ae86 and power isnt what these cars are about, its about driver feel and trying to control that feeling without all these modern day assists, i do agree that a 1NZ wont be a stupid movement on toyota’s part maybe a 2ZZ yet as long as the feeling of driving an ae86 is remember in the process mod’s can always be carried out later….part of the fun of owning this type of car.

Well, Ive had my 1983 ae86 since 1990. I converted it in about 1991 or so. 420,000klms since.
It gets as hot as in the summer.. no a/c. But I’ll not install it. I want to keep it basic. I hardly listen to the stereo.. I rather just enjoy the wonderful sound of that brilliantly basic 4AGE with the 2in straight through.
Toyota always seem to design a car with definite possibilities, but then either make a basic version with nothing in it,or get some KW’s in and dump a whole lot of otherwise useless junk… electric windows,aerials,mirrors.. oh for God’s sake! Stick your hand out and pull the aerial up!! Wind the window yourself and who needs to adjust the mirrors more than every 3 months or so.. so what’s with the electrics??
CHUCK ‘EM I SAY!!!!
Give me KW. Give me LSD… decent brakes ,balanced handling etc… Give me basic cloth trim…but dump the fuzzy stuff…

What’s nice about an AE86:
Simple
Easy to mod..
High RPM
RWD
Nice Balance
THE WONDERFULL SOUND OF A G ENGINE
About (old 86)¨s, i agree with you, i also like things to be simple, but unfortunately things have changed since the release of the classic AE86. Now days Car firms must accomplish some safety standards like air bags ABS, crash absorption, emission regulations etc… If a new ae86 is really released I think it wouldn’t be even close in achieving the feeling of a classic AE86.

Althought this looks good, I still won’t buy it.
On the contract I think the old one is the best.
In fact on my list of top 10 fav. cars it seats at #1.
On the count that the AE86 is what get me in to cars and Drift racing and the car is awesome with low hp but who needs hp in a car like that lol!
Plus let me say my top10 are all JDM and they are high reving cars and sporty and to me the old AE86 is still better.
I don’t Think this new car is going to make it very well with the people of the car world that knows alot about the old AE86.
By the way yes i’m a Teenager who is 17 and had two cars already both were Honda a 06 Civic Ex and now an 07 Civic Si. But after college i plan on buying the old AE86!

I would rather it if it looked like the old 86. This one looks a bit too.. sharp. The old one had that unassuming, boring appeal to it. You know, under the radar. Unlike the new Supra coming out. I would prefer that. But kudos to Toyota for bringing back a simple rear drive car. Though i’m a Nissan guy, the first cars i owned were Toyotas, let’s hope the bring this out in time to compete with the new Silvia.. whenever that’s supposed to be released.

I like the idea of Toyota finally making a sports car for once, but I think I would rather buy a old used 80’s ae86 then the new one, I don’t think it could be complete without the 4AG. I have a ‘87 MR2 with the 4AG and I absolutely love it.
