The next-generation Renault Megane RS will reportedly feature all-wheel drive and all-wheel steering, as well as a turbocharged engine with at least 225kW of power.

An anonymous Renault Sport insider has told AutoExpress that the company is developing the next-generation hot hatch with a one eye fixed on the latest Ford Focus RS.

As the Focus RS is powered by a 257kW/440Nm 2.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, the new Megane RS is said to have at least 225kW of power on hand to ensure that it within the same performance ballpark.

Last year, Regis Fricotte, Renault Sport’s vice president of sales, marketing and communication, told CarAdvice that the current car’s 2.0-litre turbo will soon be retired, potentially in favour of a smaller engine.

In order to cope with the extra power, the new Megane RS, like the Focus RS, will switch from front-wheel drive to all-wheel drive. It’s also likely that the new hot hatch will use a version of the four-wheel steering system employed by the 152kW Megane GT warm hatch.

As far as gearboxes go, it’s almost certain that the new car will be offered with an automated dual-clutch transmission, as it not improves outright performance, but also broadens the car’s appeal. According to the magazine, the new Megane RS will “probably” be offered with a manual too.

The current Megane RS is only offered as a three-door hatch. The new version, on the other hand, will be a five-door only proposition as the latest-generation Megane will not spawn a three-door body style.

Like the current car, the new Megane RS will reportedly feature pumped up wheel arches, large alloy wheels, and more aggressive styling at both the front and rear.

The British publication believes that next Renault Megane RS will debut some time in 2018. If true, an Australian release will probably occur six to nine months after it goes on sale in Europe.
