2010 Opel Meriva spy pics

September 24, 2009 by Matt Brogan

Proof at last! Here’s the first images revealing Opel’s FlexDoor system for the new Meriva without an inch of disguise. It was first previewed on the Meriva Concept which debuted at the 2007 Geneva Motor Show. The new generation Mervia has once again been spotted undergoing testing in southern Europe.

Losing more and more of its camouflage, the Mervia prototype bears a strong family resemblance to Opel’s new Insignia and Astra thanks to a similar lower side body design. Elsewhere, the spy photos also reveal the car’s new headlights and tail lamps, both of which help to give the Mervia’s front and rear ends dynamic appearance.

Engine options will likely mirror that of those offered on the new Astra. This means we can expect the Meriva will feature a naturally aspirated 1.4-litre engine as well as a turbocharged 1.4-litre with 104kW. On the diesel side, the Mervia will likely offer up to four different Euro5 compliant engines with outputs ranging from 70 to 120kW.

Look for the new Mervia to be officially unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2010.

Nice car but what are those cables coming off the wheels going into the cabin???

  2. Jake02 says:

    Shak
The wires goto laptops in the cabin for the testing etc and it’s not unusual I can tell you (for mules anyway)! I like this car (so far) and apparently it is to have suicide doors! :D Stupid Holden don’t know a good GM product from another!

    • Myke says:

Jake, its not that Holden don’t know the difference between a good product or bad, its just no longer economically viable to import Opels. It never really was that viable to begin with tbh, the profit margins were slim to non-existent. Shame though. If only there was another way they could be released into Oz, the Astra and Insignia are such nice looking cars and I’m sure the Meriva will be aswell…

  3. Jayson says:

It looks good, and from the shots, really does resemble the likes of the new Astra and Insignia, and even hints of the Corsa in the front. Shame that no more Opel’s will be finding homes in Australia anymore thanks to the likes of Holden. Perhaps Opel will come here as an independent brand and blow Holden out of the water. The current range of Opels being developed are the best yet, and are just examples of how hard Opel is working to make exciting cars; instead of pulling a Holden and rebadging reject Daewoos; and fooling the Australian public into believing they are actually driving a Holden. GO OPEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Shak says:

Mate as the above comment stated, Holden has no link to Opel anymore and if they were to import them, people like you who trumpet about them from the rooftops would suddenley not want to spend the money anymore. Opels are brilliant no one denies that, but they are costly and dont have much of a profit margin when the import cost and all that is factored into the equation. I dont think Opel would bother coming downunder as its a very small market and for the sub-premium brands such as Opel and VW, its hard to price their products competitively.

    • toxic_horse says:

So if holden sell a opel they are bringing quality motoring to australia.
however if they sell any other rebranded car they are fooling the public ?

  4. Jake02 says:

    To all,
Is that right? I heard Magna bought only 55% of Opel/Vauxhall, GM still owns 35% and employees own 10%. So Holden still has a link to them and I don’t care whether is viable or not, any car is superior to te Barina! The Cruze/Captiva are good cars and should be kept. But if Ford can justify importing the German-built Fiesta and Belgian-built Mondeo, as well the German-built Focus XR5 (not the rest of the South African-built Focus) for such low prices and good value than how can Holden not!? Especially when Opel/Vauxhall products are very similay priced to their Ford competitors in Europe!

    • Shak says:

Mate ur news is old. GM only own 10% and the workers 10%. Either way, no one was willing to pay for the vectra so Holden thought it smart to can it. Their new Koreans(Captiva and Cruze make it into the top twenty without fail) seem to be selling ok as most buyers buy with their heads and not their hearts. So a sporty astra which costs 25k base model with budget equipment list, or a Cruze with slightly less sportiness for 25 loaded with features. If you were a Holden bean counter i think you’d choose the latter.

    • rené says:

You’re still right! 55 percent for Magna and Sberbank (from Russia) 10 percent for the employees and the rest will stay at GM. Magna wants to cut off about 10500 jobs in Europe, close one factory in Belgium but that’s still not sure … so far

      greets from Germany – rené

  5. AAA says:

A Holden made in Europe sounds like a great idea. But there are lots of corners cutting to meet the price like the 1.8L engine in the Astra was made somewhere in eastern Europe and timing belt needs replacement before 60,000km. Not only Holden, Ford’s first gen Focus had the engine designed in Germany… WOW. The thermostat cover was made of plastic and most of them cracked at 60,000km.

    • JEKYL & HYDE says:

      aaa,

only the very early ts astra’a needed a 60k belt change.then they went 90k,now (ah)its 150k 10years.the same motor is now in the cruze.but avoid viva(60k)and barina(60k).are you clear now….

  6. J says:

I’m seeing a hint of current model Audi A3 in those taillights.

  7. filippo says:

I’m sure that if Citroën and Fiat can make it as brands in Australia that Opel could also. I’d like to see this. It has taken them a while, but Opel now has a great line-up of cars, cars which quite simply outgrew the Holden badge.

    I love Opel Meriva!
