Ahead of the car’s official launch at Frankfurt next week a handful of pics showing Audi’s new R8 Spider have been released on to the net.

The conventional soft top arrangement steers away from earlier reports that the Spider would utilise a Targa Top arrangement. Also absent are the R8’s trademark ’side blades’.

Other visual changes for the Spider model include additional air intakes located behind the seats as well as a pair of safety roll bars. The placement of the fuel filler cap was also changed due to the lack rear pillars. Changes under sheet metal are focused around chassis strengthening.

It has also been rumoured that the R8 Spider will be offered exclusively with a V10 engine, though we expect a V8 to follow shortly after launch.

Sales timing for the new R8 Spider is expected for early 2010.

  4. crouchy says:

    looks stunning but brown????

    • RdS says:

i think it looks bloody brilliant in that colour. quite a few manufacturers have added nice metallic browns to their colour ranges recently.

      • spellbound says:

Could be the new black , metalic brown was huge in the late 60’s , remember my father buying his valiant fireball 318 ci in 1969 in that same colour , very cool.

The audi , well i can only dream , its magic

  5. Toxic_Horse says:

    Brown is never cool, ever………

  6. Yanzo says:

do not buy if you’re not hot

  7. Tim says:

Audi, another amazing car! Love it!

  8. Alex says:

Actually Toxic_Horse, you may not actually like it but brown is probably just about the coolest colour you can get on a car right now, mainly because it’s such a left field choice. The main thing is that car brands just need to get their brown right. Audi have, it looks like Coca Cola. Porsche have, their’s looks like chocolate. Mini have, their’s just looks great but I don’t think BMW got it quite right with “Havanna” on the new Z4.
This car looks brilliant. I’ve seen pictures before of what it might look like and they were very close to this but they looked a bit fragile. This looks perfect and gets rid of the awkward profile that the coupe has. Job well done Audi.

  9. mdt says:

What a welcome relief from the visual assault that has been the HSV E2, Subaru Liberty and Subaru Outback launches this week. This thing is gorgeous.

  10. Philthy says:

It’s nice but I think a lot of the R8’s character is contained in the shape of the roof. This looks a lot more anonymous IMHO.

  11. Shak says:

I some how beleive that this thing looks better than the coupe. The removal of the side blades just looks awesome and the bits behind the seats look wonderful.

  12. Mitchell Oke says:

Liking the design and definitely like the colour too. In profile it looks a bit like a Lambo, which isn’t a bad thing, and since Audi own Lamborghini it’s no real surprise they’d look there for some inspiration.

BMW do have a nice brown, it’s sort of a browny bronze colour, looks awesome on the M5.

  13. crouchy says:

Brown Scarf yes, Brown car No.

  14. Alex says:

What do people here have against brown cars? It’s just a colour, and as long as the car doesn’t look literally like crap, then what’s the problem?

  15. Steve-Poyza says:

Its simple, I ♥ this car.

  16. Neo Utopia says:

I was a bit surprised to see the brown colour as well, many German luxury brands have recently been releasing brown promotional cars in their photos. I good metallic brown looks much better than the retro matt brown in the past!

  17. Carfanatic says:

I’ve always traditionally hated brown cars, but that looks amazing in Brown.

    Yet another winner for AUDI
