Subaru Impreza diesel hits UK, wait & see for Australia

September 3, 2009 by Matt Brogan

Subaru’s all-new 2.0-litre boxer diesel engine has now found its way in to the brand’s five-door hatch, Impreza.

The horizontally-opposed 110kW/350Nm unit is said to be well refined, flexible and offer excellent throttle response.

Capable of a combined average fuel economy figure of 5.0 litres per 100km, for a theoretical range of 1080kms from a single tank, Impreza Diesel also manages low CO2 emissions of just 155 g/km.

With a top speed of 204km/h, and a 0-100km/h time of 9.0 seconds, the Impreza Diesel is available two model grades, the 2.0D RC and 2.0D RX.

The Impreza 2.0D range starts at £20,000 (A$38,950) on the road in the UK.

Subaru Australia has told CarAdvice that although Impreza Diesel is not yet slated for the local market the success of the upcoming Outback Diesel, due here November 1, could prove a catalyst for bringing other diesel models to our shores if demand is strong enough.

I’m surprised a 4cyl boxer diesel is smooth. Being compression ignition and high CR – and the boxer’s inherent odd-fire phasing, it thought it would have been a bit coarse. Obviously they have been able to engineer these traits out of it.

    • Tack says:

My 6cyl boxer petrol engine is always smooth as “Hot knife through butter” till red zone.
I really hope diesel version of boxer engine is as good as petrol boxer.
Cause My 4 years old Liberty needs replacement, if I can.
Forester diesel would be great…But We want to 6 speed Auto.

  2. davie says:

How about a Forester diesel, seems the most logical one to bring here…

  3. Bob says:

A diesel Forrester would be awesome. Except if they use that silly CVT with it. Slightly deeper low range gearing with the diesel motor would win back some of the original fans of the Subies of old who actually used them off-road.

  4. TTrs says:

too expensive to me…. wait and pay a bit more for golf GTD, or even skoda RS Tdi..

  5. Simon says:

Diesel passenger car with AWD. Good work Subaru, someone is thinking!

  6. Boris says:

The Impreza needs a diesel to make it’s AWD drag efficient. I would buy one in diesel for sure

  7. filippo says:

I wonder how new this boxer diesel engine is. The guys at Top Gear UK often laugh at how bad the diesel Legacy (Liberty) is.

  8. davie says:

    hi filliop,

Where are the bad reviews of the UK legacy diesel? Are they on the show or in the mag published? the only one I know of is the switzerland to blackpool economy test when captain slow thought it was pretty good?

  9. DesignEng©™ says:

davie, I would’nt worry too much. TG is a (great) light entertainment show, nothing they ever say about any vehicle should ever be taken seriously. Nobody is really that niave are they?

  10. filippo says:

It has been mentioned a number of times on the show (including the show you mention when it is criticised for having no torque), and JCs dislike for them can be found in articles like the following:

    http://www.timesonline.co.uk/t.....638139.ece

  11. JML says:

I wonder about the sense of this for Subaru. The AWD makes the Subarus heavier as it is. Add the extra 75 kg or so from the heavier diesel engine and you’ve got a right porker…

  12. DipStiK says:

The German site subaru.de shows the Basic Impreza diesel at almost the same price as a basic Forrester petrol model. So in NSW it should be $34,500 drive away.
