Holden Astra is officially finished

By David Twomey |

GM Holden has confirmed to CarAdvice something that’s been fairly obvious for a while; the Holden Astra imported from Opel in German is no more.

Holden has also said it has no intention of importing the next generation Astra into Australia and has confirmed that the suspension of Astra imports, which we first told you about back in April, has now become permanent.

Holden spokesperson Kate Lonsdale told CarAdvice that the strategic review of the Astra import had failed to make a business case for the continuation of the European sourced vehicle.

261054-1

The decision ends Holden’s European imports and certainly leaves the door open for the use of the popular Astra nameplate on the locally produced, Cruze-based, coupe that Holden is planning for later next year.

“Following a strategic review, we can confirm that we won’t be reinstating the Astra in Australia,” Ms Lonsdale said.

261059-1

She said it was not a decision taken lightly by Holden but the car was not viable in the current tough economic times.

“All of our small-car efforts are currently focused on the Cruze,” she added.

Holden Cruze

The sixth-generation Astra will be introduced at next month’s Frankfurt Motor Show and was believed to be under consideration by Holden for import into Australia as a premium product.

Ms Lonsdale said Holden would not revive the current Astra and the same applied to the new model, which is due to enter production in Germany and Britain later this year.

2009 Holden Cruze

From late next year Holden will begin building a local version of the Cruze sedan that it currently imports from Daewoo in Korea and this will be joined later by a hatchback version, designed by Holden, that will be a likely replacement for the Astra.

In its first full month of sales the Cruze sold almost 2000 units and leapt to the top of the pack in Holden small car sales.

GM Holden's small car conceptual design

To date Holden has given few details of the hatchback other than a vague styling sketch, which shows a strong resemblance to the Opel built Astra.

  • alex

CRIMINAL! It wouldnt be so bad if their korean products weren’t so average. Yes the cruze is a step in the right direction but it still isnt the best at anything. AVERAGE!

  • Deco

The Cruze is still better for Holden then the Astra is, so in my books, good decision.

Why do all styling sketches always have 1m high wheels….

  • Yanzo

i dont’ like the astra that much but i think it sucks, cause if i wanted a car but they didn’t import it i’d be like dude!… wtf!?

  • Brett

Typical Holden; dump the European quality and replace it with Korean rubbish.

Holwoo means a great deal to Australia; NOT!

  • Bucks

Holden will rely on a below par product underpinned by massive targetted marketing campaigns for quite some time to come I think…Well with a majority of their products anyway. (Think Barina, Cruze, Epica, Captiva…)

  • Tek

Brett, I take it you have never owned an Opel before?

    European does not equal quality.

  • JEKYL & HYDE

bit of a shame, but cruze does have the new astra’s floorplan, front suspension, motor(petrol),has 6 sp vrs 4sp auto, much better interior, dash, steering wheel, without the euro (30k plus)pricetag.does need new astra’s rear end though.probably holdens biggest fib is the “reassuring thud of the doors”in the cruze ad.everyone who has shut the doors on an AH astra knows its king of the hill,as well as body panel thickness(the best)…

  • http://www.caradvice.com.au OSU811

ok the korean barina, epica, viva, captiva, are crap, crap, crap & more crap!!
but I actually think the cruze is a not bad quality car!
not a segment leader but definately not anywhere near worst in class! and with the australian built ones holden has a good opportunity there to fix up any problems and tweek the car more to our conditions, to make it a class leader!!!

  • Tanya

Please make a wagon version of the Holden Cruze! Most small cars out there dont come in wagon form and they are so practical for a young family.

  • http://Caradvice.com.au Baddass

Correction CA, you have speculated since April, now it has been confirmed.

  • Robin Graves

Tanya, ever heard of a car called an i30cw ?

  • Shak

only thing Holden should change is the look and the rear suspension. They will probably jack up the price to compensate for the ‘Aussie made’ sticker. Anyway why do people percieve european made as high quality. Many of you have probably never owned an opel.

  • Shak

Srry meant they should change the cruze.

  • o

AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW the new astra is stunning.

  • Untouchable

#Its a shame, it really is, the Astra is 1st. world standard, good as the golf/ritmo-bravo/mazda3, not a 3rd class korean antique.

#The market has spoken, they have sold boat loads of cruzes, the punters want cheap-cheap-cheap cruze, the FACT is Holden will struggle with a golf priced vehicle, holden is now a cheap brand not a class brand, they know that and they are doing a good job meeting the customers needs.

#Of course depending who takes over Opel it still *may* be sold here, not as a holden but under its own name of Opel?

  • Damian

Thanks for giving us Aussies what we’ve always wanted, Holden! Good looking Korean cars at affordable prices!

(Before you click the “thumbs down” icon, please note that I am being sarcastic…)

  • Tack

    Ha ha ha

This is the end of GM Holden.
It become Korean Deawoo Holden now.
They should change name soon or later.
    Are you happy?

Well, I guess CA would be very happy right now, since their positive campaine(articles) for Korean cars have been really work and successful.

  • Andrew M

Im not sure that Holden would have rights to the Astra nameplate even if they wanted to brand the Cruze hatch back with it.

With GM separating from Opel, It could be like when Isuzu took away Holdens lease of the Rodeo nameplate.

  • philthy

So how soon after Opel is sold to Magna can Ateco or someone start importing the new Astra? That, the Insignia and Corsa could be a nice little money spinner. Who needs GM.

  • AAA

Does the Cruze require timing belt replacement before 60,000km?

  • http://www.caradvice.com.au David Twomey

Baddass, No actually we reported in April that imports had been suspended, now we are reporting that this has been made a permanent decision

  • david

does that mean that hsv will try to mod an holwoo. Thats a car crash waiting to happen! (excuse the pun)

  • CJ

All you ‘Astra Lovers’ have obviously never owned one. I work in the EFI spare parts business and have worked @ a Holden dealership. They are crap!!!
Faulty cam sensors, faulty ECU’s, faulty coil packs, faulty transmission ECU’s, 60k timing belt replacement?
In my top 10 selling parts, two are for Astra’s, coilpacks and cam sensors. Not bad considering the volume compared to Falcodores!!
Granted, they drive great, but the running costs over 3-5 years will leave you broke.
    Bring on the Koreans.

    • Astra Boy

“All you ‘Astra Lovers’ have obviously never owned one”!? I’ve had mine since new with delivery in Feb 1999. Haven’t replaced a single item you mentioned apart from the timing belt as part of log book servicing. Compare that to any car on the market and the running costs are very low. My wife’s Mazda6 is half the age and had 10 times the problems!!

I’ll be sticking with the ‘H’ brand now that the Koreans are here…Honda!

    • Lazybones

Very true Astra Boy, i’ve had 3 Astra’s dating from ’97 to 2005 and never had a problem. But the devil is in the detail. CJ works in spare parts. He’s only going to see problems no-one is going to contact him and say “my Astra is doing great, sorry i don’t need anything”.

It won’t be long before the parts for the Cruze start rolling in, You can’t take the cheap and cheerful line and believe the car won’t have problems as the years roll on. Especially with GM DAT.

  • s4driver

Andrew M , actually GM probably could still use the name considering they’ve already approved the sale of the Astra & Insignia in China and the Insignia in the US, both under their Buick brand.

  • azza85

Following on from what philthy said, can Opel, if they wanted to, start exporting directly to Australia under the Opel brand?

  • OMG

Cruze is an excellent car at an excellent price. Top marks to Holden for making the smart business choice and go with Cruze. I still don’t like the name.

The future is looking good for Holden, and I anticipate the eventual phase out of the 1st gen Daewoo rebadges with quality global GM designed product a la Captiva and Cruze.

  • Wheelnut®™

I read an article on another Automotive website [sorry; can't give you the link] back when the news about GM selling Opel to Magna first surfaced – that GM could still retain a 10%-15% share in Opel.

If so; it would mean that there is a possibility of Opel selling the Insignia in Australia through Holden Dealers.

Mind you as I have said before I think that GM should have made Holden build the Insignia instead of the Cruze – then there would be nothing the eventual owners of Opel could do as the tooling etc would belong to Holden..

  • The Realist

“Thanks for the resale values Holden” say all the Astra owners!

  • Frosty

Andrew M, Holden have their own right to the name. If you are old enough to remember Holden used the Astra name well before it imported the Opel version when they had the rebadged Nissan Pulsar. In other words Holden can use the Astra name unlike the Rodeo which was firstly a Isuzu here.

  • Shak

Goodbye to the much loved Astra, the second best product from GM in my opinion.

  • Shak

Opel should start exporting to Australia, as a premium brand because they make reliable and good looking product and are priced around V-dub price. As such they would probably sell well because of the fact that many people actually know about them unlike Skoda.

  • UK

Now we need the Cruze hatchback. Possible?

  • o

i agree with shak bring on opel. Of course holden doesnt like competetion seeing the way cadillac went. imagine if opel established themselves here at VW or even skoda pricing

  • Brendon

I’m sure if Holden had put as much advertising as they have with the Cruze into the next-gen Astra, it would would have been just as successful if not more (even if it was more expensive), they just needed to wait for the sale of Opel, and sign an agreement with the new owners.

  • maximark

I think it’s a good move by Holden since the Cruze is now as big as the Astra regarding to sizes. So what’s the point to have both. Also, the Astra is not that reliable as people think, my brother had one, it broke down many times that he ditched it within one year, he bought it brand new.

I dont like Holden keep importing other brands and then rebadge them as Holden, especially the poor quality Daewoo ones. Why can’t make their own and be proud of it? I read an article somewhere which said that the Cruze will be built in SA soon, just hope that’s true.

  • Byron

I did see this coming. I had a dream about a week ago & it had a holden advertisement saying “HOLDEN ASTRA – DISCONTINUED” I even watched the euro v.s dollars on the news to see if it had improved hoping that Astra would make it. I didn’t think both would fit in the line-up anyway. Anyway sales for Cruze are exceptional. I was reading somewhere on this website & someone is waiting till Novemeber for their car to arrive. But overall i give Cruze a 8/10. Just need the 1.4 Turbo engine & that facelift next year & it should be complete. Holden has said they might even add a wagon & convertible. I think make as much bodystyles as possible since Astra has gone & even HSV should do something. I believe Cruze will be a sucess with more ppl getting farmilar with the name. GO HOLDEN!

  • Gege

I think this is a abosoulte joke. Shame on you Holden. All they want is to import all the cheap slave labour produced rubbish from Korea. I have owned to beligum built astras and was very happy with the quality. I would never buy any of the junk Holden is now importing. Why did they even bother getting rid of the daewoo name? Euro cars are the best

  • Luv Local Industry

    Good move Holden.

The current Astra was okay at best. The earlier generation model’s (except Pulser) were rubbish.

Rose tinted glasses I think :-)

  • lazybones

As a previous owner of 3 Euro Astra’s I can only say this decision is F***ing Tragic!

  • Mark Greenburg

Good riddance, I say. The current model Astra is overpriced and underpowered. The painted B-pillars on the base model are very pov-looking, and the interior is ugly grey, and cheap looking (compare it to a Honda Civic – enough said). It also lacks a sedan variant, which every other competitor offers, and also lacks options such as climate control and sunroof, which most Japanese competitors offer. The first generation Astra (1996-1998) was another extremely bland and ordinary vehicle. Only the second generation enjoyed success, but that’s probably only because Toyota & Mitsubishi were offering outdated competition at the time.

  • gasman

    hey gege,

have a look at this, and check out the slaves!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ol_7N42VwKs&fmt=18

  • http://. Naughtyius Maximus

This will prove to be a mistake as plenty of these cars sold in past and the new model is truly stunning as! Shame on you Holden as you will have your work cut out with less sales me thinks!

  • MisterTwo

Hey Frosty, the Astra name has been around in the UK for many years (at least 25). It was Vauxhall’s name for their small hatch and the Opel version was called the Kadett. Then the names were rationalised across Opel/Vauxhall. There are many old Opel/Vauxhall owned names which have been used by Holden: Viva, Senator, Omega, Manta. You don’t think Holden invented all these names do you?

  • http://www.littlepixiegifts.com.au Gift-Ed

I wish this wasn’t the case as the new Astra and Corsa look great and would be something I would certainly look at buying. But I understand that Holden is here to make money, especially now after its near death experience, and clearly they will make more money with the Cruze. All we can hope for now is that the local Cruze hatch is darned good.

  • booter

the GM Daewoo cruze has 4 wheels, 4 doors, some glass windows and some metal panels, and now a holden badge. it fits perfectly into holdens current outlook on cars.

  • booter

“compare it to a Honda Civic – enough said” – and the civic come with a complimentary cardigan as well, but maybe thats what makes it so over priced.

  • Norm X

Whens the turbo HSV Cruze comming out?LOL

  • drew76

….and that’ll be the last time I even give Holden a glance. Pack of bloody idiots.

  • VXR

What can i say holden, what a dumb move. I’ve just bought a new Astra VXR, and this will likely be my last holden. I’d rather buy a ford focus than a second rate piece of korean junk. This is tragic. I’m on my fourth and last astra, this is a sad day.

  • Revit

Why would they waste their time building a piece of crap like the cruze here? If they can’t fid anything better at least stick to importing them so as not to waste our resources on a D grade car.

It’s amazing how trashed the H brand is these days.

  • Nurb608

Whilst I am pretty upset we wont be getting any more opels over here for the foreseeable future, I still don’t think the cruze is a bad car. It is still based on the latest worldwide gm platform that the astra mk6 is based on and once it is actually built in australia the build quality should improve. And to mark that reckons the current astra is underpowered, which one exactly, mines fine :)

  • Ryan

This will be the downfall of Holden’s small car creditability which has already suffered, with the introduction of a little “woo”, namely the Kalos based Barina, Lacetti based Viva, Tosca based Epica and Captiva based Winstorm. The only thing Opel based is the Combo, hardly the flagship. $10 bets you that will go within the next 6 months.

  • timmy

I have a Astra h 2 door and a Astra G hatch CDX. I cannot beleive what Im’ hearing hear. Astra was the only car theat was imported from Euroupe and before japanese car lovers spear me with “euroupean does not mean quality” I say this. euroupean styling will crap all over any asian built car. I am a huge fan of the Astra and all began with its looks, one positive out of this is the Astra is gonna become a classic.

  • ABMPSV

The only Holden car I liked.

  • Janjuc

A great little car is the Astra Hatch, have had one for ~ 5 years, the last of the European models. It is solidly built and with the 2.2L engine I have averaged ~ 7L/100klm, in all types of driving.
    Farewell ….

  • KD

Interesting decision, given that earlier this year and late last we were seeing reports about Astra being the best selling import in Holden’s history, and the highest selling imported vehicle of any class. Seems they were selling so well…I wonder what the real reason is? ;)

  • billy

I’m a current owner of a AH Astra which is a fantastic vehicle. The build quality is very good. I was quite dissappoint to hear that Holden were no longer going to import the next generation Astra and instead opt to import a cheap vehicle blaming curreny issues. Apart from the Global financial crisis in 2008 the euro currency to AUD in around .60 – .65 on average and has been so for some years.

They also stated that importing the Astra would not be viably in these tough economic conditions and the astra would be too expensive for australians to purchase. Don’t Australia dodge the recession bullet? The folks over in Europe & UK have felt the real force of the economic downturn but yet the new Astra volume will go to that market.

C’mon Holden the people of Australia are not poor and if the flood of other european producers can continue to send vehicles to our shores then I can see much potential for the new Astra. Starting prices in europe are arounf 15,000 euro?

Some people may want to pay a cheap vehicle but some people also look for quality.

I can’t see what the problem asking 30-35K for a high quality hatchback. VW, BMW, Alfa have similiar cars starting from this price range and even higher.

Is it more risky to import the new astra or to set up a manufacturing facility locally to produce vehicles (hatchback). To keeps costs down in manufacturing you need to produce volume or cut spending i.e labour costs. Is Holden going to keep the RRP for the local cruze consistant with the imported cruze and if so how????

This will be the last Holden I will be purchasing. Holden is known only for commodore. It is holdens top product and they would not survive without it.

They have now moved from a quality car producer and a somewhat low cost producer i.e cruze, epica, barina.

I will be visting the nearest VW dealer.

  • billy

Cheers to all you Astra fans!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Dr edelstien

Tanya go get a diesel i30 cw Hyundai wagon Holden are heading down the Korean made vehicles purely on the profit margin path.
    Shame……
