This week’s Frankfurt motor show has brought an unveiling for the hotted-up Suzuki Vitari S and, although not yet confirmed for us, Suzuki Australia is known to be keen.

The Vitara S is the first model to feature the company’s new 1.4-litre Boosterjet turbocharged direct-injection petrol engine. In Euro-spec trim, the new 1.4-litre motor has been tuned to deliver 103kW of power and 220Nm of torque.

That’s an improvement of 17kW and 64Nm over the 86kW/156Nm naturally aspirated 1.6-litre engine that’s currently the sole power plant used in the new Vitara crossover.

According to Suzuki, when the new 1.4-litre turbo is paired with a six-speed manual and all-wheel drive, the Vitara S is good for a top speed of 200km/h and an EU fuel economy rating of 6.3L/100km (city), 5.0L/100km (highway) and 5.4L/100km (combined).

In addition to a new, more powerful engine, the Euro-market turbocharged Vitara is distinguished by a new slotted grille, which is reportedly inspired by the unit used on the iV-4 concept car.

Other features standard in Europe for the new range-topping Vitara S include LED headlights, adaptive cruise control, radar-guided autonomous emergency braking, red accents for the interior, and seats clad in a mixture of leather and faux suede.

The new Vitara S’ 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment unit also be the first from Suzuki to include support for Apple’s CarPlay smartphone app mirroring standard.

Suzuki says that the new Vitara S will go on sale in many European markets “soon”.

UPDATE:

Suzuki Australia has confirmed its interest in adding the new Vitara S to the local range, although a launch is still to be confirmed.

Bringing the Vitara S to Australia would bring the compact SUV closer to matching Mazda’s popular CX-3, which is offered with a 109kW/192Nm 2.0-litre petrol engine. That gives the Mazda a slight power advantage, but the peak torque points go to the Suzuki.

Unlike the Suzuki, however, the CX-3 can also be had with a diesel engine: a small 77kW/270Nm 1.5-litre unit.
