Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate due in November

By Matt Brogan |

Mercedes-Benz will launch the Estate version of its award-winning E-Class in Europe this November to add one more model to the already impressive sedan and coupé line-up.

The Estate combines unique design with Mercedes-Benz’s renowned leadership in safety, comfort, quality and practicality while also featuring a number of technical innovations which no other car in the world in this category is able to offer.

From drowsiness detection to automatic emergency braking when an accident is recognised as imminent to the Adaptive Highbeam Assist headlights the E-Class sets a new precedent for rivals to aspire and for the first time will also include self-levelling air suspension as standard as well as unique new load compartment management features.

I may well update to one of these in the next year and half, pending market trends and leasing potential. The E Estate I have always found one of the most desirable Benz products in the real world, and will have enough room to throw the bikes in the back and kayaks on the roof. Woohoo!

Nice car if you can afford one.

Not a bad looker for an estate although the rear wagon glasswork makes the back look a little droopy & would look better if it followed the raising shoulderline of the rear door.

The tailights are also too large.

A6 avant is still the best looker of the luxo wagons but I hear the Merc estates have the best boot capacity.

Give me a Volvo any day, better looking and better value.Plus they dont scream “old mans car” like this does.

  • Devil666

Haha BM, I love your sarcasm. I think you mean ‘nothing screams old man like a Volvo wagon’! With this cars pointy front, I think it may attract a new audience of younger folk. Not to mention the rearward facing 3rd row seats, thats just plain cool. Volvo cant make a cool wagon. The XC60 is kinda cool, but thats not a wagon now, is it? Plus Volvos just generally are… boring?

I’ve read that most road testers of the sedan are rating it pretty highly, At least two reviews said it is a superior ‘drivers’ car to the equivalent 5 series! Not the most apples and apples compare-o since one is about to be replaced but considering the dynamics of the last E class, it is a big upgrade and should be a hoot and a half to drive. I imagine the wagon is no exception.

E63 AMG Estate for me, please!

I think I’d prefer a V70, a 5 Series or an A6 Avant. It’s too low at the front and high at the back. I am a big fan of style over substance and I just can’t help but think that if the back was a bit sleeker, it would only sacrifice about fifty litres of luggage space in an area where it will never be used anyway – the celing – and it would look so much better.
Still, I’d rather the estate over the saloon.

Devil when was the last time you drove a Volvo ?

Volvo have lost the old “hat drivers” image, sorry !

Volvo today is edgy and is a lot more appealing to the younger market than Mercs .

  • Will

Yes Pops, when the time comes I shall also view the A6 offerings…

  • Alex

BM’s right actually. I think Volvo still have a slightly boring image to a lot of people, but I see them mainly being driven by men and women that would be no more than thirty five. Besides, Volvos have great handling and the brilliant T5 and T6 engines, so they don’t really deserve a boring image. They even look great these days, especially the C30 and the XC60.

Devil, where did you hear about rearward facing third row seats?

  • Rym

Seen a couple of sedans on the road now, not convinced on the styling yet…

The previous bug eye version is a lot more resolved.

No doubt the new E is a better drive but the styling may have missed the mark for me. The sedan looks very boxy and square both front and back, the wagon is slightly better in these pics, but I’m not sold on the style of the new E class.

As for Volvos… perhaps in another 3 to 4 evolutions perhaps… but they are starting to think outside the box (upright and rectangular) now, which is a good thing. Give it another few evolutions and it might start to be ok.
