Hyundai sales jump to fourth for July
August 6, 2009 by Matt Brogan
Despite the tough economic times Hyundai has defied the odds to jump in to fourth place on the VFACTS vehicle sales chart for the month of July, selling 6226 new vehicles - a Hyundai Motor Company Australia (HMCA) record.
The result sees Hyundai as the only top ten brand to increase sales in July with its market share growing to 8.3 per cent. It also means that Hyundai placed third for passenger cars sales for the month of July.
The news comes at a time when the total market contracted some 15.3 per cent, July YTD 2009 compared to July YTD 2008, and is the seventh consecutive month of year-on-year growth for the brand and an overall increase in sales of 28.3 per cent (YTD).
“The results for July consolidate Hyundai’s position as a dominant player on the Australian automotive landscape,” said Kevin McCann, Hyundai’s Director of Sales and Marketing.
“Our committed Hyundai dealer network is continuing to deliver exactly what today’s buyers want: award-winning products coupled with outstanding value.
“Our broadening buyer profile reflects the brands acceptance as a challenger to the leading manufacturers,” he said.
Strong sellers for the brand in July were:
- Getz with 2147 units ( a segment share of 23.2 per cent)
- iMax Shuttle with 194 units ( a segment share of 20.3 per cent)
- iLoad Van with 313 units ( a segment share of 17.4 per cent)
- i30 with 2045 units (segment share unavailable)

CarAdvice, is the usual monthly breakdown by manufacturer and model available yet?
I studied this in the school of life.
It’s called offering a competitive product at a reasonable price, while earning a reasonable profit. The result is a company that grows steadily and remains profitable even in the bad times.
Compared to say Honda, which has followed the practise of ripping customers with its “bigger package, smaller contents” and higher price methodology – just look at the City. Presumably that’s called selling-market-share at accounting school. You know, like Arnot’s BBQ shapes. There used to be 250Gm in a packet, last time I looked it was 200Gm, and probably now 175Gm, but the price rise stays within the “inflation guidelines”…..
Ford did a “Hyundai” 10 years ago – sold the Festiva cheap and cheerful car and they sold bucketloads. Then they replaced it with the Fiesta, better car, but much higher price, and sold none. That must be stupidity????
Well done Hyundai. I’m going to suggest my mum gets a diesel auto I30 for her next car.
Congrats Hyundai, affordable and with a long warranty how could you go wrong. My brother and sister both have one and there`s have been faultless. If on a budget or as a 2nd car I wouldn`t hesitate buying one.
