MINI has today announced its performance orientated John Cooper Works Cabrio will be available for sale in Australia from next month.

Powered by the 155kW race bred MINI Challenge engine, the MINI John Cooper Works Cabrio is set to be one of the fastest accelerating open top vehicles on Aussie roads this side of $100,000.

“It’s certainly been a big year for MINI with the release of the MINI Cooper D, the 50th anniversary, an all new Cabrio and now another member is being added to the growing MINI family,” said Justin Hocevar, National Manager MINI. “The MINI John Cooper Works brand continues to reinforce MINI’s authenticity, providing enthusiastic sports drivers a range of vehicles powered by the very same engine that’s used in the MINI CHALLENGE race series.”

The MINI John Cooper Works Cabrio joins the fray in typical John Cooper Works style featuring a 1.6-litre four-cylinder power unit, complete with a twin-scroll turbocharger and direct fuel injection that manages 0-100km/h in just 6.9 seconds. Maximum output is available all the way from 1850 to 5600 rpm with peak torque of 260Nm increased in Overboost mode to 280Nm.

Power is transmitted by a six speed manual gearbox engineered to accommodate the increase in torque and fuel consumption is just 7.1 litres per 100 kilometres on the combine cycle.

Dedicated John Cooper Works features include 17 inch Cross Spoke Challenge light alloy wheels, brakes, exhaust, badging and speedometer to 260 kilometres per hour.

The John Cooper Works Cabrio will be priced from $56,900*.

A great little package no doubt but the pricing is too steep.

I drove one of these in the UK, it’s brilliant! The one I drove was black and it didn’t look girly at all. This car, despite being font wheel drive, is a proper competetitor for the Mazda MX-5. It handles brilliantly, makes a great noise and is generally great fun. It’s a better day to day car than the MX-5 as well, obviously with it’s extra seats and all. You even get a better badge, all for the price of the Mazda. It’s a great car.

^^^except that its not the same price as the Mazda. Its around 20% more.

A mini for $100K? Spend a bit more and buy yourself a Porcshe Boxster!

  • Simon

Why don’t people read the story?
    Sam-R it said UNDER $100K

That side-on picture just reminded me how little the new Mini looks like the original.

  • Casey

LOL @ Sam-R. Did you even read the article? You got owned!

  • PaulS

Hopefully this one comes with a better gearbox. I have enough friends who each has owned one for about 3 years now and they are all starting to have issues with gearbox :-S

  • Alex

Dlr1, the MX-5 costs about $48,000, so yes this is a bit more expensive, but not 20% more expensive. Plus, by the time you had the the Mazda specced up to match the JCW’s feature list, I think the Mazda would end up costing more. It does have quite a long list of standard features.

  • Sam-R

Thats what you get for reading all but the last line :-)

I’d still buy a Porsche Boxster – second hand.
