Chrysler PT Cruiser production to continue

August 3, 2009 by Matt Brogan

Chrysler has announced today that production of the Chrysler PT Cruiser will continue.

2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser

The Chrysler Group Toluca (Mexico) Assembly Plant — the exclusive home of Chrysler PT Cruiser — will continue to build the quality-proven, versatility packaged and “too cool to categorize” small car.

“The heritage-styled Chrysler PT Cruiser continues to be a global success story,” said Peter Fong, President and Chief Executive Officer Chrysler Brand and Lead Executive for the Sales Organisation, Chrysler Group. “With more than 1.3 million PT Cruisers sold in more than 60 countries since 2000, we’re excited to announce we’re re-energising the iconic and award-winning PT Cruiser.”

The Chrysler Group changed the landscape of the automotive market when it introduced the segment-busting Chrysler PT Cruiser nearly 10 years ago.

Its one-of-a-kind exterior styling and Swiss Army knife-like interior flexibility, offered at a compact car price, redefined the small-car segment and became an instant hit with consumers.

High-quality, craftsmanship, performance and functionality continue to give the award-winning Chrysler PT Cruiser a leg up on the competition.

For years, leading consumer magazines and third-party studies have recommended the PT Cruiser for its consistently high levels of quality and refinement—tying for first place in J.D. Power’s Initial Quality Survey (IQS) this July.

Well that is unfortunate. These things are ugly and horrible to drive.

  2. VW Freak says:

    Why Chrysler, why?

Nige, not just ugly and horrible to drive, but also spend a lot of time at the dealership for warranty repairs.

  3. Angel says:

As long as the punters keep buying it, they should keep making it, be silly not to, bit like the land rover defender.

Never been in one, guy i know owns one, he and his family loves it, never been a issue or problem.

Fiat can modernize it if need be.

  4. D says:

VW Freak although I agree that it is quite ugly, did you even read the article? It has tied for first place in the J.D. Power’s Initial Quality Survey so I doubt that they spend a higher amount of time getting repairs than any VW would.
Seems to me like your statement has no evidence to back it.

  5. Flying High says:

    …you can’t buy taste.

  6. Dlr1 says:

The do make a great rental car in the US. They go fast over speed bumps and you are more than happy to give it back.

  7. Mark says:

The PT is now one of the oldest cars on the Australian market, essentially unchanged in 9 years. There are basically only 4 vehicles that are older: Nissan Patrol (1997), VW Beetle (1998), Ford Falcon wagon (1998), and Nissan Navara D22 (1998). That makes the PT Cruiser about 5th, although the Volvo S60 was also introduced in 2000.

  8. TomR says:

The Falcon stationwagon shouldn’t be there, just because the arse end styling and suspension is barely changed doesn’t mean every single other part of the car hasn’t in Ford’s constant improvement strategy.

And dont forget the Tribute too, mister 2000.

I dont get this car. It looks cool, but its NOT. Thats the problem. Its a totally BORING pretend-people-mover pretending to be COOL? Thats one of the most dull characterless engines EVER made, with a chassis and transmissions to match.
Maybe if they made it a little sporty to drive, a little sporty looking and put a decent engine/drivetrain under the hood, THEN i’d buy it.

  9. Captain Mainwaring says:

Everyone loves their dog, and PT Cruiser fans are no exception.

  10. adam (aka mada) says:

    What quality!?

  11. Alex II says:

Maybe it will sink the company for good this time.

Had one as a company car once, they have the fuel consumption of a Road Train, similar turning circle and that wonderful American build quality…..a trifecta if I’ve ever seen one.

  12. adam (aka mada) says:

    TomR,

    Couldn’t agree more.

  13. Baddass says:

Chrysler has announced today that production of the Chrysler PT Cruiser will continue.

And the motoring world releases a sigh of relief.

I trust that it will have a significant upgrade soon?

  14. Shak says:

TomR the Tribute got a styling upgrade a couple of years ago and Mazda dont sell it anymore.

  15. Brendon says:

I saw one today, wow! they are hideous… a face-lift would be nice.

  16. Mark says:

Tribute hasn’t been sold since 2007… lol. Oh, and even if you were to count it, it (along with the still on sale Ford Escape) went on sale in 2001, making it newer than the PT Cruiser.

  17. nato says:

“High-quality, craftsmanship, performance and functionality” – everything a PT cruiser isn’t.
