Subaru Levorg Australian Launch Confirmed – OFFICIAL

Fans of Subaru’s fourth-generation Liberty GT wagon, “starved” of a logical replacement in recent generations, have had their prayers answered today.

Subaru Australia has responded to reports of an Australian debut for the new Levorg wagon by putting all speculation to rest: it’s coming next year.

CarAdvice reported this week that sources within the Subaru Australia dealer network had confirmed the Levorg’s coming, but the company had remained tight-lipped on any plans.

Today, Subaru Australia managing director Nick Senior said that the company’s home office in Japan had been “extremely supportive” in securing Levorg production for our market.

Senior also quietly acknowledged that outspoken fans of the earlier fourth-generation Liberty, smaller and more Teutonic in its styling, have not been entirely satisfied with the badge’s direction in the years since.

“It will appeal to those fourth-generation Liberty GT buyers who have been starved of a logical successor but we believe it will also attract a much wider audience because of its performance, its versatility, its refinement and its high level of standard equipment,” Senior said.

The Levorg wagon, although based on the small Impreza range, rides on a wheelbase just 20mm shorter than the fourth-gen Liberty’s 2670mm base, and its overall length is a mere 39mm short of that Liberty generation’s wagon body.

Local specifications for the Levorg are still to be revealed, and with a launch set for “mid-2016”, it will likely be sometime before more is known.

The Levorg is offered in Japan with a pair of four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engines, one a 125kW/250Nm 1.6 litre mill, the other a WRX-sourced 221kW/400Nm 2.0 litre unit.

These engines are offered exclusively with the WRX’s sports-tuned CVT auto, and while a manual may join the range before the local debut, Subaru has yet to confirm any plans in that direction.

“[The Levorg] will join one of the strongest sporting line-ups in the industry – BRZ, WRX, WRX STI and XT – vehicles that last month accounted for nearly 500 sales," Nick Senior said today.

While announcing the Levorg's coming, Senior also hinted at another set of special-edition models that are due here later this year, along with one in early 2016 "that will be the ideal complement to the Levorg".
