GM Holden chief replaced

By David Twomey |

The sweeping changes in the General Motors management have filtered down to GM Holden with chairman and managing director, Mark Reuss, being replaced by his sales chief.

GM Holden announced this morning that 46-year-old Alan Batey, would take over the role from September 1.

Mr Batey, currently Holden’s executive director, sales, marketing and after sales, will succeed 45-year-old Mr Reuss, who has been appointed to a senior, as yet unnamed, product development role with General Motors based in the United States.

Reuss, Mark

Mr Reuss entered the most senior revolving door at GM Holden in February last year to become the third chairman and MD in a little over six months. He was previously executive director of global vehicle integration, safety and virtual vehicle development and has a GM career spanning back to 1983.

He has since had a tough 18 months, overseeing the closure of Holden’s Melbourne engine plant, the scaling-down of production of the locally built Commodore in response to dwindling large-car sales, the loss of the Commodore export program to the US, and a $70-million loss for 2008.

Nick Reilly At GM Holden

Nick Reilly, GM’s recently elevated executive vice president and president of GM International Operations, Nick Reilly, who’s based in China and has responsibility for GM Holden, paid tribute to Mr Reuss’s leadership of Holden through a difficult period and said Mr Batey was an ideal appointment.

The Holden position was among changes announced by Mr Reilly, unveiling the new leadership structure for GM’s International Operations.

“Mark’s leadership during what has been a tumultuous time for the auto industry, both in Australia and globally has been outstanding.

Reuss, Mark

At a time when the industry has been in crisis and where the parent company has been through a Chapter 11 bankruptcy process, Mark has championed the interests of Holden at every turn,” Mr Reilly said.

“He has played a pivotal role in ensuring it is an important part of the new GM. He achieved a great deal in a relatively short time and returns to a key role in GM where he will remain a strong friend of Holden.

“Alan brings extensive leadership experience, exceptional product and commercial knowledge and a real passion for Holden.

Batey, Alan

“He has worked for GM across four continents and brings crucial continuity of leadership for Holden in what is a highly competitive marketplace.

“It is strong endorsement of the Holden leadership team that the Chairman and MD was able to be selected from within existing ranks,” Mr Reilly said.

Mr Batey was appointed to his sales and marketing role in January 2006 and is also a member of the Holden Board of Directors.

He was previously Vice President of Commercial Operations for GM Daewoo, a position he took on in 2002 when the new business was formed.

He previously held various sales and marketing assignments with Vauxhall before transferred to GM’s European Headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland, and held a number of senior roles in GM’s European operations.

Mr Reilly also revealed that, Mike Arcamone would take over as president and CEO of Gm Daewoo, replacing Michael Grimaldi, who is retiring.

arkamone

Mr Arcamone joined GM in 1980 and has held several important positions in manufacturing and global purchasing in North America and Europe.

Currently he is vice president of GM Powertrain Europe, and is responsible for 10 manufacturing plants and five engineering lo

  • The Realist

Gee, now Australia’s arm of Tax Payer Funded Motors has another MD.

  • http://Caradvice.com.au Baddass

Third boss in six months: what the hell are they doing? Might be fighting about what other marketing spin they can put on the boring Cruze.

  • Tack

Why don’t they bring CEO from Daewoo, Korea?
This person would work cheaper than any other ex-Holden executive or GM member from USA.
And best part is his (New CEO from Daewoo) job is EXACTLY same as he did in Korea !!!!
Build decent, cheap unattractive cars for Australian !!!
Holden, you do not need any input from USA (Especially from General Motors).

This guy was the best thing to happen to Holden since the Astra. I cant beleive Holdewn have started on the downward spiral already.

  • john a

so this person was the gm aftersales manager,as there is no after sales at holdens this apointment does not bode well for holden

Spam word Daewoo. I really am gettin the feeling that these spam words are not random. hey all, read in carsguide today that four Commodore mules were spotted testing in Lang Lang, and two were definetly diesel and the other two were coupe and convertible. Im not getting my hopes up but i think the coveted Monaro is set to make a return. Keeping my fingers crossed and waiting for the September update of the Commodore. hope the diesel is coming.

A previous VP at Daewoo as well.

I think this represents a watering down of the management level in Australia, with more control and decisions being made by the China based executive team.
Nick Reilly, in China, is taking control…….

  • DesignEng©™

    Shak,
May not have been Commodores. The “source” was unsure but assumed that they were Commodores. More likely to be coupe/convertable versions of the Cruze .

  • Andrew M

    Is this guy an Aussie???

If not write him off now.

With out an Aussie at the helm they will never have anyone who truely cares about the direction for Holden as will be purely treated as another Pawn in the GM stable.

All these guys coming and going are only concerned about racking up more stripes on their shoulder. In the corporatre world the only way you move up the ranks is to constantly shift around.

Have a look at Fords Last 2 Aussie Honchos……
    Say no more.
The 2 Americans that came in between when Polites left and MB arrived nearly screwed the joint.
Now see the passion now an Aussie is back in charge of an Aussie business
He isnt here purely to earn stars on his forehead, he is here with pasion for his roots

Mark Reuss has been promoted to a new position at GM in Detroit.
The thing is GM Promoted Denny Mooney to a new position in Detroit after he made the dumb arse decision to import Daewoo sourced Barinas.. a decision which not only ruined Holdens image but it didn’t make sense given that they still imported Astras from Europe.

So it seems in GM as in government you get promoted because of you incompetence inability or inaction and the ones with the brains and the ideas never make it let alone get any credit.

  • Captain Mainwaring

Hell, where are these guys going? Let’s hope Mr. Batey has a plug which is exactly the right size for the plughole.

Holden need a CEO who not only has a real interest in the cars Holden designs & builds but is also passionate about Australia and the Automotive industry…. As Andrew M said They need an Australian

I mean who else has a better idea about how the average Australian thinks or what s/he wants in a car etc than an Australian?

The last decent CEO Holden had was Peter Hannenberger – yes he was German but he was passionate about what he did.

Another one bites the dust, this is Holdens last chance to return to profit, but I believe they are in major trouble just like Ford. People need to realise that it is no longer profitable to build cars in this country. Lets face it if it wasn`t for the Aus Government subsidies they would have been gone long ago and with that about to dry up they along with Ford will be nothing more than IMPORTERS.

  • SteveH

Does anyone know if Kevin Wale still works for GM somewhere? From memory he was head of Vauxhall UK for a while then went to Asia. He is an Aussie they could bring back to run Holden.

  • realcars

He should have stayed in after sales until he got it right!!!

They might only make variations of Camry but this is the vital area in which Toymota nail Ford and Holden….and advertising.

Keeps the comatose coming back year after year.

I hope Holden knows what they’re doing. I’m beginning to wonder if it’s a wise move.
