Peugeot 4007 confirmed for Australia

July 13, 2009 by Alborz Fallah

Peugeot Australia has confirmed plans to bring the 4007 SUV to Australia by November this year.

The 4007, which has already gone on sale in Europe, is based on the same platform as the Mitsubishi Outlander and is built by Mitsubishi in Japan.

Peugeot Australia feels the 4007 is ideal for the brand, which is now looking to move into the SUV sector.

Unlike the Outlander, the Peugeot 4007 will be powered by Peugeot’s own 2.2-litre HDi diesel engine that is estimated to put out 115kW & 318Nm of torque. Australian delivered vehicles will be fitted with six-airbags standard.

Australian specifications are not yet officially confirmed but CarAdvice believes a five-speed manual and six-speed automatic (Getrag) gearbox will be offered.

Peugeot Australia says it expects pricing in the mid 40s with only two high-spec variants offered. The company predicts sales of around 500 units per year.

The 4007 will be available as both a five and seven seater.

They could have atleast altered the rear a bit more, it looks 95% like the Outlander and thats not a good thing for an ‘upmarket’ brand like Peugeot.

Don’t expect this thing to sell a lot anyway – just like the Renault Koleos.

Looks better than the Outlander but pricing will determine how successfully it sells.

I think it looks great and with that engine, it makes a lot more sense than the Outlander. I think they’ve got a real Tiguan contender there.

The Nissan Xtrail in TL dci spec, with the 127kW Renault diesel would appear better value – depends on much fruit they load the 4007 with.

This pretty much looks just like an Outlander except for the front. The grill is hideous! Despite all this, I find it strangely likeable, but they could’ve styled it abit more to distinguish itself from the Mitsu. I like the look of the Outlander alot but if I were to buy a 4007 I’d at least want it to be alot more different exterior wise.

Though not pretty and I don’t like the looks of the Koleos, at least Renault made an effort not to dishearten it’s buyers with a X Trail body with a Megane front.

The engine for this seems to be a winner, better choice than the Outlander offering for sure. Perhaps Mitsu could convince them to dunk this engine into the Outlander as well?

Also pardon my ignorance but what association does Mitsubishi have with Peugeot?

I prefer the outlander looks ever this anyday. Too big a grin in my eyes. If they want to upmarket it they need to change the interior – which they haven’t so that’s gg to them.

With this coming to Australia I doubt Mitsubishi will ever release the diesel variant of the outlander :(

Nobody: I believe in the European markets the Outlander comes with the 2.2L peugout diesel, not in australia though.

Yanzo you goose, Peugeot didn’t emulate the rear of the Outlander, they just didn’t change it! I don’t think buyers are stupid enough to think this is anything more than a gauche, more exclusive version of the Mitsu. Couldn’t Mitsubishi and Peugeot have come to an agreement that Mitsu sells it’s Outlanders in Australia, USA and Asia and Peugeot focus’ on selling it’s cars in Europe? Though the diesel in the Outlander would be nice.

Remember, they make a Citroen version of this too called the C-crosser. personally I’d rather have that here.

You guys are too critical! Since when has another addition to the Australian market been a bad thing?

I emailed Mitsubishi about 6 months ago and they said they had no plans to introduce the diesel Outlander. So looks like I want the Peugeot. It’ll have more equipment and be more frugal for what is the same car.

Now we need the C-crosser here to really complete the trio! Come on Citroen Australia!

Milobob: You are correct. The Euro Outlander has the 2.2L diesel manual and 2.4L petrol CVT as their line-up. Mitsubishi and PSA did a deal as Mitsu wanted diesel engines and PSA wanted a 4WD. Good thinking 99!

      says:

This car is a really smart idea for Peugeot. Mitsubishi are experts at building 4WD’s and Peugeot are experts at building diesels.
Peugeot wanted to release a pseudo 4WD, so why wouldn’t they just put their diesel in a Mitsu.
So long as Peugeot keep it around the higher end of Outlander prices I think it will be a great buy.

The rounded front end doesn’t mesh with the rest of the vehicle. Australian’s have never been fans of re-badged vehicles (holden nova/appolo) and considering the weak sales of the Outlander I don’t see this Peugot selling in numbers above marginal

Jimbo, I totally agree, a top shelf Peugeot Diesel in a well built body, isnt that what we need in the marketplace, you’d have a good run out of it at any case, I think I can replace my Honda CRV with one.

      says:

Nick, I agree that Australians were never fans of rebadging like the Apollo, Nova, Lexcen, Nissan The Ute etc but those cars looked identical to the originals. Although this car is obviously an Outlander it is a little more differentiated. Look at the Mazda 323/Ford Laser and 626/Telstar – Australians loved them!

      good work

a LOT LOT LOT uglier than the Outlander and more expensive too…

Mitsubishi is currently developing 2 suitable diesels to be released this year, these have aluminium cylinder block, double overhead camshaft layouts, four valves per cylinder and a common rail injection system with a variable geometry turbocharger.

With a clean diesel emission performance in mind, all engines are designed to comply with Tier 2 Bin 5 emission regulations in the United States, Euro 5 standard in Europe and Japan’s Post New Long Term regulations.

It definitely looks a lot more aggressive and sporty than its French counterparts; the Renault designed/built Koleos/Dualis [not to mention their names sound like some kind of STD....]

The only question I have is given that its based on the Outlander will it come with a Premium Rockford Fosgate Stereo as well?

I currently drive an Outlander VR V6. Fuel consumption is the main issue. The Peugeot 4007 looks great but pricing could be 10K more than the 2.4 litre Outlander which with a CVT auto can get 6.8 litres per 100 K at 100kph highway cruising. What would you do?

Check out the interior… it IS the Outlander… more than just platform sharing…. ! Shame with the only thing really distinguishing our rides these days being the design and brand cache (these days seems standard equip in cars of the 30k-70k mark are all the same), Peugoet goes and basically facelifts the facelifted Outlander.

My preference..in the comparison.. the outlander. Likely cheaper and more suited to our conditions.
