2010 Toyota Prado – spy pics

By Matt Brogan |

Our friends at Autoblog have sourced spy pics from the Middle East showing us the all-new 2010 Toyota Prado.

More a facelift than an out-and-out redesign the new Prado features a redesigned front fascia incorporating upswept headlamps, vertical bar grille and a raised lower bumper.

Up back more pronounced tail lamps sit within a U-shaped chrome tail lamp garnish.

The vehicle is thought to be based on the same platform as the current model though we’re not sure if it will be the same platform as is expected to underpin America’s next Toyota 4Runner/GX (due in September).

Engines are expected to be a carry over effort as per the current line-up while the middle eastern models will also be availed with a 4.6-litre V8 engine.

So this is the latest example of the sad Toyota “bump” styling.
When you understand how surfaces can be edited in a CAD system, this is just all wrong.

    • sandy

looking good Toyota finally getting a new shape thank goodness.

  • Hjalle

They have ruined an OK looking car, I think that a total re-design wouldnt be unreasonable…

  • o

this is obviusly a new model not a facelift however similar

  • Martin

I don’t know, there just seems to be something that’s not quite right about the look of this.

  • Mmm

    hey CarAdvice,
any idea on what kinda suspension the 2010 prado will have?

  • Sonu

TOyota and Lexus designs are way too similar. Boring weird designs except for the IS250. Thats hot.

  • realcars

Toyota must be trying to see how ugly their new models have to be before people stop buying them.LOL

  • Gilly

Looks just like a 4WD out of the Chinese domestic market would….yuk!

  • o

Martin thats because it is a toyota!

  • http://br-look.blogspot.com Nemesis

Most of the car doesn’t look too bad, but why do they keep persisting with that horribly ugly heating-radiator-style front grille… Painting something chrome does NOT make it look better…

I hate that grille so much (and same for the old model) that if my boss gave me a Prado as a company car, I would give him $500 imediately to get a custom grille for it. I’m down right serious!

  • Yanzo

CAD… who uses CAD… the pros use pro engineer these days

front looks great, back’s alright but put some bigger wheels on it.

  • DesignEng©™

    Yanzo,
Actually, none of the “Pros” use ProE (which is just midrange CAD software anyway).
The Pros use NX, Ideas, Catia ….

It’s funny when amatures try to pump themselves up – ProE hahahaha

  • Mumble Duck

Ewwwww……….the front screams UGLY!!! Look what you have done Toyota.

  • http://www.fmgjbv.au rich boy

I have to agree with you o.

  • Richo

so the toyota designers thought “how can we make the 120 series prado look stupid”

  • Tomas79

An asian flavour to a design originally created by a french design studio. From what i have read on other sites, there is very little change to the current platform underneath, so it is pretty much just a facelift. Well overdue, given they came out back in 2001. Can’t say i like the sides though, hope that is just an middle eastern trim… The Front is allright though…

  • Jake

You guys are blind…looks OK to me.

  • Alex

Wow, that thing is really ugly. In fact, there are SsangYongs with cleaner lines. I actually can’t think of an SUV that looks worse than that. And to think that people complain about BMW’s styling department…

  • Shak

It’s like the old Prado ate the new prius and they spontaneously combusted. Its as ugly as the excess skin for The Biggest Loser.

  • http://carz.com/ Carz

Toyota Prado is such a great car…but what happened with this one…Toyota’s been experimenting a lot, I just hope it won’t affect them real hard.

  • Frontman

Gee Jake, look athe comments, we may be blind but you seem to be the odd man out……
Carz, It will not affect the sales volume, it’s a Toyota! The blind faithfull will buy it and spend the next five years of their lease convincing themselves that it is the best looking Prado they have ever seen!!!

  • Lukaas

    Yanzo…

I dunno about Pro Engineer software…

But I’m using CATIA on my other screen as I post this message :-)

I dont think Pro Engineer has enough function to design autmotive parts nowadays.

And the Grille is definitely distinguishable… Its hate it or love it at the moment I think.

BTW, Styling is tricky bit of automotive design that concept/original sketches look much better.. they get approved then by chief engineer… then somehow, by the time its production ready…. after all the tool requirements and regulations and such…. it just looks wrong in comparison to concept sketches…. they seriously need engineers sent back to industrial design school that way sketches are somewhat “close” to production level… I’ve fortunate enough to have experience in styling and now work is engineering design lol… so so different agendas hehe.

  • Brett

It looks very similar to the GX series Lexus 4WD that is available in North America (which i think is basically a tarted up Prado anyway).

Now it just needs the 4.7l V8 that the GX has.

  • http://www.caradvice.com.au OSU811

same old, same old, just another boring toyota design thats really no diffrent to the old one, apart from some new lights.

  • Milsie

    !

  • Gman

that front bumper really reflects my personality- stiff upper lip.
i could see myself driving a car like this any day, it is way better than anything nissan could ever build.
i love toyota’s and blokes too.

  • nobody

It does seem like a “facelift” as opposed to a completely new model. The new bumper just makes the Prado front look like a crab’s face now. Come on Toyota, what’s going on?

  • crouchy

OH DEAR GOD WHAT HAVE THEY DONE????????????????

  • 351XT

Any word on a three door prado?

and what about increasing the tow capacity Mr toyota??

  • Byron

Another fugly Toyota. When will they stop. Yaris is utterly crap & idk how its ok 2 drive with the speedo in the middle of the dash. We’re trying to make cars safer, not opposite. Corolla – try again, Holden Cruze beats it. Lol. Anyway, Current prado is alright but this new Prado’s front end screams f*%king ugly. But knowing australians will love it. Everyone loves toyota. Go HOLDEN!

BTW 2010 Nissan Patrol is a good looking 4wd. I’ve seen pics of it & i gurantee, it will whip Landcruiser’s ass.

  • Tomas79

Byron Says: “Another fugly Toyota……Go HOLDEN”

Another bogan suffering from tall poppy syndrome!!

Might I mention that the current 8 seater with full time 4wd drinks as much as holden’s small Cruze diesel…

I reckon with a front ARB Sahara bullbar it will look pretty good!!

  • Lukaas

    Byron…
    Thanks for sharing your opinion.
But I too like the Nissan Patrol, but no matter how much I like it… its not gonna beat the landcruiser.
If you actually do some research, the Landcruiser is pretty much ‘top dog’ for its class and category.

The Cruze looks nice in some angle, I dont think it beats the corolla. Corolla reviews has been fair its not a 5 star car, but a 3.5 to 4 star car, as it is good for its worth. The 3 owns that category anyways, even though I think the new 3 is aesthetically a step down from previous. And just want to clarify the myth, the 3 is a tiny tiny bit expensive for its range… but Mazda can charge that much because its the “trend” at the moment…

  • TomasTheTankOfAnEngine

YO,UGLY,i heard fashion models carry pictures of this car so thay can purge at will.

  • Key

JAKES RIGHT… The New Design looks perfectly fine… Its an improvement from the old. Its not photogenic but Im sure that once we see it on the roads, it will look great.

This 4×4 has done so well in the market that ppl are expecting a lot from the new design. Toyota will never make a major change at the exterior with any of their models… Only facelifts.. however you can always expect a drastic change in the interiors and the mechanicals.

  • http://mrpoo.com.au michael kairouz

looks very very very ugly please start again.

  • Richy Strahan

This vehicle is simply brilliant!!! love the decals!!! the word amazing gets thrown around alot of late but if you looked it up in the dictionary, this little trinket would be the definetion!!! DIAMONDS!!!

  • Eric

I have to say, the front looks ugly, even worse than existing model I’m driving.

Unfortunately, there is no interior pics which might get my attention a little bit.

Why Toyota designer cannot design a car like Tourage those kind of European SUV? Is that so difficult? Look at recent Toyota new models, LX570, LC200, RX350, RAV4……., all of them doesn’t have a perfect shape! Something wrong in Toyota!

  • al

i have the 03 model and think the new prado has to look heaps nicer infact it heaps uglier.

  • John

When the L/C 200 came everyone hated it yet 2 years on it still out sells supply by far. The new Prado is a top hat with revised suspension. The 3 door 5 seat has an increased towing capacity over the 5 door 7 seat. Spec level is well above anything Toyota has out now with the Grande (now Kakadu) having 4 external cameras among other features that people who buy them will probably never use. I can’t understand why people get on these forums and rubbish Toyota. They lead the way in almost every class out selling other brand month in, month out.
You say its ugly but you said the same thing about the clapped out VT siting in your driveway when that came out.

  • Eric

I think John is talking sth inside, actually, we don’t have detail information about this new Prado, all we are seeing today is just the body, so everybody will just express the opinion about body itself, of course, there might be sth different and attractive inside the body, and later people may compromise between this two and still accept this body if it can provide lots of things from its inside, but that will be another story. We will see, what kind of engine, convenient features Toyota will give to us besides this ugly body.

  • John

Any Toyota dealer in Australia can give you detailed info on what the car will and wont have.
    The API has been released.
It out lines full spec and model line up.
As well as an internal luanch pack which has colours and such.

  • John

And after today seeing some pics and model spe for the facelifted Corolla(due in oct). I can say if you dont like the look of this car you will hate the Corolla too.

  • Kevin

Ok, dont mind the look too much, but whats the story with the tail gate? Is it going to be a single door with the spare wheel on it or the lift up/drop down door’s like the land cruiser..?

  • John

Single swing door same as the current one. The lift up tail gate is only for overseas markets, where the car has only one fuel tank.

  • Kevin

Thanks John. Makes sense. I was very close to signing up for the current model when I heard about this one. Think I will wait and see /drive it in the flesh before I make a decision. Your dead right when you say about the 200 series L/C, a lot of people poo pooed that and as you say, it still out sells the compition. I love my Toyota’s and looking forward to getting my next one.

  • RAY

All i can is i hope it still has two 90ltr fuel tanks

  • Prado Lover

i love my toyota Prado. Would not change it for any other
    Still looks beautiful.

  • http://CARADVICE.COM JORDAN

    the back screams UGLY TOO!!!!!!

  • http://www.uaeboy.20m.com Ali

I think Toyota Prado one of the best as small 4X4 car,I don’t like it shape so much but as a car it is nice but the problem with Toyota as I think they made 3 to 4 model of the same car and that i don’t like that,on same car you will find different engine.

  • Toyota Fan

I had all intentions of upgrading our current Prado (2007 model) as it has been a fantastic car.

Until I saw the new model.

    It is horrendous.

I won;t be buying one of these.

  • James

Thats a pretty big car. But four wheel drives are only useful for people with big familys or in the country.

    • Tomas79

Or people who enjoy going bush frequently!!
