US car giants to return ‘leaner, meaner’ says Obama

By George Skentzos |

United States President Barack Obama has said he hopes GM and Chrysler emerge “leaner, meaner, more competitive” after appearing on US television today to discuss the country’s ailing automotive industry.

This comes a day after the US Treasury pumped an additional four billion dollars into General Motors, raising the total in bailout loans to more than 19 billion dollars.

The harsh decisions forced upon the US giants will pay dividends as the market begins to recover, with initial projected auto sales of 10 million for 2009 in the US now expected to reach as much as 15 million.

“My hope is that we will see both GM and Chrysler having emerged from this restructuring process leaner, meaner, more competitive with a set of product lines that appeal to consumers good cars that are fuel efficient and that look at the markets of tomorrow,” Mr Obama said.

General Motors is due to present its restructuring plan to the US government at the end of the month, although the company’s chief executive officer anticipates it will likely require filing for bankruptcy.

While avoiding comment on a possible GM bankruptcy, Mr Obama did express concern over the potential job losses for those employed in the industry.

“We’re confident that they (GM and Chrysler) can emerge and take advantage of that new market and actually be very profitable and thrive, but it means going through some pain now,” he said.

While this may provide some comfort for the US auto industry, this still leaves GMs offshore interests exposed to the threat of closure, with the German government already taking action to protect Opel.

Then by his own definition, they wouldnt be ‘Giants’ right? Me confuzzled.

  • Andrew M

It seems a little bit A*se about face to me for them to be given the money first, and then prove they are worthy of it later

bottom line is that the US government is not going to let GM and Chrysler completely fail, they may well both go bankrupt, but any suggestion that either brand will dissapear all together is frankly rediculous and only sprouted by the ill-informed, both will survive in some form or another, the US government will make sure of that

What worked in the past no longer works and the people who put the company’s in financial ruin needs to be replaced.
We need to stop giving money to the people who screwed this up to begin with.

Too late… USA has had their time now the Hyperstate European Union is coming…
Owning all USA cars and having the best cars in the world.

Australia will have to now suck u to EU.

  • Frenchie

European Union is overated! A Protectionist, fictional body that thinks it running several countries (as the rest don’t really matter) as states of a larger country like the US or Australia.

    Phewww!

  • o

Frenchie that is the point of the EU and the fact is that almost 20 or however many countries it is have more unified laws than the Australian states so and we are a country

The problem facing the Obama administration is (however poorly handled it may be) GM still represents 1% of US manufacturing! Given the climate he inherited and the current employment situation it would be either a very BRAVE or STUPID president to let them fail.

Barrack is currently involved in a very important chess game and he is staring check mate in the face, his next move will either label him as one of the greats, or a failed expirement in inter race-relations…..
(deep but unfortunately true :( )

Elitist = NO IDEA,Europein union strips sovereign countrys of Europe,of there rights to make there own decisions based on what they want, all for profit.

Amazing how you can run a company into the ground, file for bankruptcy and start all over again!
In a way, whats happened over the past 8 months with the golbal credit freeze has really highlighted which companies are truly the better companies.
Not to bash Crysler/GM but Ford has suffered the same issues yet is not heading for bankruptcy and i will bet now Ford won’t have too.

Holden will still exist. It will just have a “Made in Korea” stamp under it.

  • Andrew M

    T/S,
well there is a chance of you selling desirable vehicles after all…..
ha ha ha ha ha ha

Now dont get you back hair up, it was just a fun dig

I had that waxed Andrew M. I can’t see me ever leaving Camp Kia. It is like a relationship, I look at other brands but i stay faithful to one. Seriously though i do think Holden will become fully imported for a while at least.

    Correction,

Barack Obama said he HOPES GM and Chrysler emerge “leaner, meaner, more competitive”. He is not silly enought to say that they WILL.
Can GM and Chrysler learn from their mistakes? Many doubt that they can.
