Porsche Panamera taking the elevator

April 22, 2009 by George Skentzos

In the lead up to the world premiere of the Porsche Panamera at the Shanghai motor show, a select group of journalists were invited to a private unveiling of the new four-door coupe at the Shanghai World Financial Center in China.

The only problem was at 425 metres above ground level, the 94th floor of the world’s third-largest building is also the world’s highest event platform – leading to the dilemma of how to get the car up there.

The Panamera was far too long to drive into the freight elevator and as a result Porsche was forced to create a unique platform specifically for this event which allowed the car to be loaded near-vertically into the elevator.

Judging by how long this has been up without eliciting a comment, it would seem to be a bit of a non-event.
Sorry I was the one to have to start it.

  2. Biggles says:

Captain, I thought it was interesting, but because it doesn’t involve some kind of holden/ford/toyota bunfight I don’t think anyone else did.

  3. trippyfoo says:

    That is quite a sight..LOL …
I can imagine the logistics … and the pressure to make sure the car got through unscathed…

For sale… Low km demonstration model.. some scuff and dint marks but can be buffed out..
One of a kind .. only one to have been transported up an elevator by several hundred metres.

  4. crouchy says:

Is there any chance that the guy who organised the reveal also designed that rear end?

    Sensing a theme of half-doing things… thats all….

  5. Yanzo says:

haha that’s cool. who needs engineers…

  6. Elitist says:

Jackie Chan was right bout what he said about Chinese…

  7. Iz says:

Not bad shots of the rear, kinda like it better in the photos =p The digital recreations made em look fat and ugly.

But still, no mean feat of engineering. Wonder how much it cost to design the one platform, for the one car.

  8. Cupid Stunt says:

What are the approach angles on a Panamera? Surely this has exceeded them!

Personally I cannot see the relevance of launching a vehicle to capable of high speeds and great handling on the 94th floor of a building. Ridiculous and irrelevant.

  9. WVB says:

A spectacular demonstration of specially engineered german pointlessness.

  10. Grammar Nazi says:

It’s growing on me in the flesh. Would need to fang it around a track however…

  11. Marcoz says:

    hmm..just proves 2 things…
1* porsche is getting even more STUPID than ever.
2* That the panamera Looks so much better behind closed doors…

    :)

  12. Duck says:

Why bother! Just have the premiere on the Ground Floor! Lol!

Wouldn’t it have been to heavy for the elevator? You’d think so.
