After a massive opening weekend at the US box office grossing US$72.5 million and re-writing box office history, Fast & Furious co-star Paul Walker, has confirmed a fifth instalment of the franchise is a ‘go’.

“With the way things opened up, Vin and I will be coming back. We’re making a fifth one, and we’re going to Brazil, that’s it” Paul Walker said on a Los Angeles morning radio program.

With almost all the original cast on board in Fast & Furious, the movie has smashed box office records with the largest April opening in history.

The movie also took off in overseas markets too, with an Easter weekend gross of US$46.5 million and virtually guaranteeing more of those 10-second cars on the big screen.

“Fast” had already hit US$209 million worldwide and that was prior to openings in Australia (news in, opening night in Australia was $2.5 million and should hit $20 million), China and Italy, notoriously strong markets for this genre.

We don’t know about you, but we are looking forward to those 10-second cars lighting up the streets of Rio De Janeiro.

Saw this yesterday and i loved though i hated the ended where it should have kept on going!

My only Criticism was that that were not a lot of new cars i was hoping for the GTR

    2. I can’t wait. When i left the cinema after the first one it was entertaining to see all the kids in the car park revving up their Suzuki Swifts and crappy old Gemini’s. I may have done a little burn out on the way out the car park too. (It was an accident, my foot slipped……..Officer)

Hi guys, sorry about the long post, but I felt compelled to gripe about this movie and see if anyone else feels the way I do about it…

I went and saw this film during the week as a fan of the franchise and I have to admit to my disappointment of the newest instalment.

I get so angry with Hollywood sometimes. They know they’re on a winner here; the actors, the cars, the culture. They’re guaranteed success, all they have to do is release the film and include the words ‘fast’ and ‘furious’ somewhere in the title. So it annoys me when I see that the actual making of the film isn’t taken seriously. What I refer to is the expectation of us viewers to watch races through busy city streets that are monitored by overly interruptive GPS systems, cars driving under rolling petrol tankers and races that go through underground tunnels, and then take it all seriously.

I’m talking about the time when car movies were hardy. When Steve McQueen raced a Mustang through San Fransisco chasing a Charger. When George Miller gave us Mad Max and those pioneering camera shots from the bonnet of the car gaping up at a savage looking Mel Gibson and that oh so imposing on/off supercharger on his XC Falcon. I felt something when I watched those films, I felt the moment, and I was there. The car sounded so raw and the chase felt deadly. And you know what the secret was? They actually filmed these movies, outside, in the real world, they didn’t have computers back then so the art to success was creative direction and bulls-eye sound editing.

It’s the same when I jump on YouTube. My favourite videos are the ones cars racing on the limit of adhesion on dangerous rally stages, around the Nurburgring or around empty airfields (re the recent link to Ken Block’s gymkhana test).

So, when I go to see the Fast and the Furious I would be delighted if they could catch that essence of what it is to race cars – on the edge. I want to see filming of actual cars and hear the engine buzzing and see the driver fighting for control, not actors in a car that was filmed in a studio and who are then placed in a virtual world through state-of-the-art computer trickery. It becomes so fake and plastic that I can’t empathise with the ‘panic’ of the situation and I am left feeling numb to the film.

Will the movie execs hear my concern? Of course not, these movies makes millions the way they’re being made, so the execs will continue to sign the cheques to pay the computer whiz-kids who create them, so we can continue to pay to watch them just the way they already are.

I’d rather not cough up my hard earned and have the two hours it took to watch Fast and Furious and spend it on YouTube watching Hans Joachim Stuck at the Green Hell or Ari Vatenen on Pikes Peak. But would I really do that? No, I wouldn’t, because a part of me asks, “But what if this one does deliver the chases and the sounds I want to see and hear?” So they’ve got me, and you, and there ain’t nothing we can do about finding ourselves in the seats of cinemas watching this rubbish.

      Cheers,

      -Luke.

I throughly enjoyed the first one. It is a great movie to watch on a rainy night.

However, the latest one, number 4, is very poorly made. The only new car was the Honda NSX driven by Mia, but even that didn’t get much on screen play. The Subaru STI looked out of place in the movie. =S

The driving was crappy, with a lot of CGI and overdone tail happy cornering.

Disappointed, and am glad I didn’t pay to watch it.

I was born and raised in Rio and I still have some family over there. I can tell you the streets at night are already like the Fast & Furious movies, just search youtube for “Rio Night Racer”. That’s why they want to make the next movie there. Plus Brazil has a nice mix of old American muscle cars and new ricers plus a few rich kids with Ferraris and Lambos.

Although Australia has very nice cars, the police here is just too efficient compared to Brazilian police, so they stop the action too soon and quickly and cars are impounded… Don’t get me wrong, I like the streets to be safe, thats why there are racing tracks, but for the point of these car movies, Rio wins hands down!!

The movie was pretty good, I don’t really care about the acting or plot, I love cars and it’s not every day that a new car movie comes out at the cinema.

Oh and the main bits of the movie I didn’t like were the lesbian scenes (lesbians are only nice in real life, in movies its just cruel temptation) and the fact that Vin Diesel’s character managed to do a wheelie on that Camaro in the dusty sandy desert… Heck even the ones he did in the other cars were too fake, yes the cars had the grunt to do it, but not the wide (and warmed up) racing tyres or the grippy surface… Besides, anyone with that much cash to spend on a car and with that much need/want of winning the race, would also install at least a slightly raised wheelie bar… But hey, the wheelies were still cool to watch!!

      lol go the BOPE!!

Guys, particularly the ones “bagging it”.
      Relax.

The Fast and Furious series has always been about action as opposed to a coherent plot or award winning cinematography/acting.

I personally liked this 4th installment, but the 1st one is still the best, because it was the closest to the culture of car tuning/street racing. In USA, car aftermarket parts are actually cheap enough to raise a hooby out it… in comparison here in Oz.

I’m actually surprised on its huge success, Vin Diesel and Paul Walker surely has found their niche market, shallow plot action films…. but hey nothing wrong with that, theres a place for those types of movies in the market. And I usually consider myself a movie buff type, I have my appreciation for the shallow-plot action genre.

The STi was dissapointing that they painted it that way, the R34 with the GTR R35 engine mod and 19 inch Volk racing wheels gave me chills… long live the R34… and R32 for that matter. The muscle car theme was good and I bet americans are happy with that, as shown by the huge success there.

Fast and Furious here in Australia?
Dont kid yourself…. the amounts of cameras we have here and the regulations on cars…. its redundant… although just worth noting there are night street racing still going on… as some here will know. ;-)

Australia do have a lot of imported cars from Japan, shame most of them are Non-turbos and driven by P platers who put huge wings on under powered sports cars…. the V8 ford and holden hoons arent too good either… they just know how to press the pedal down…. most when they try to actually “drive” it, usually hits a tree or a baricade…
      young ones usually….

      Jason,

The latest one is actually FF 2.5 its a prequel to number 3. I was hoping to see more of Han on number 4 but pity. Number 4 would be as bad as number 2. Number 3 would have been my favourite.

Its a success because no other movies jump on this genre as of recently, cars has always been a favoured hobby and this movie fills it.

It’s a shame walker didn’t choose the R35 over the 34 he had it on screen, perhaps nissan werent eager to see this car mangled on screen? the Subie didn’t sound like a subie to me…

I wasn’t a fan of the Subi at all tho, and the “tail-happiness” of that GTR was a bit silly. I still loved the Look of the GTR tho, I loved it when he brought up them pictures of the GTR’s on the screen, he obviously has the same taste as me :p

I have the plot for Fast n Furious 5.

There will be a big black german car (porsche, merc etc) where noone can see the driver and he follows these punks to their drags and runs em off the road and kills em. It will be up to Vin Diesel to stop him. The germans car will have NEIN11 on his plates.

Throw in simple dialogue for asian markets, some upcoming talentless Sears model and sponsorship from GM…

Man, I should be a Hollywood writer.

F&F 4 is an ok movie. I agree its not as good as the first.

The reason why they are still on the R34 is if you get the DVD and watch the extras you would know its cheaper to get a R34GTT and convert it to look like a R34GTR than it is to get a bunch of R34GTRs. R34GTT costs $20G where a R34GTR costs $80G.

There is no way they will get a R35 as they are way to expensive and way not worth smashing up. They still have a budget they have to keep to and blowing it all on the cars is not what they wanted to do.

I agree having F&F in Aus isn’t that good. Yea, it would be nice but the cops here suck and they would just complain and get the movie shoved out of the country anyway.

I heard F&F3 was filmed in Aus. Still not sure but thats what I heard and saw. The mountain scene was suppose to be filmed in Brisbane and I even saw a car chase filmed in Brisbane when I was up there. If it wasn’t F&F3 then what was it? I’m still waiting to find out what it was. All I remember was 2 black Silvias one on its roof after a roll over and a few other ricers driving along.

I think a F&F 5 will be pushing it. #4 was like the end as it has become pathetic. It’s not like the 1st or 2nd. They were both good but the 3rd and 4th kinda ruined the story as they were backwards and didn’t fit. #3 had nothing to do with Brian and Dom who the story is really about.
I think if #5 is written and done by the makers of the first 2 then it might be ok but it looks like they keep getting made by someone else and ruins the story.
