the back seat looks so cosy.Personally i would by a PAS becuase i dont need the offroader part.

  • HAL

Alborz, samll thing, but there is a discrepancy between the no. of steering wheels you gave this car on the artcile page, and the home page.

  • Simon

Ok so this is scandalous, but I feel the looks are reminiscent of the AU Falcon. It’s controversial, some will warm to it, others will always wonder “what were they thinking!?!?”. If that stigma doesn’t bother you and you are happy to burn lots of fuel then this car’s specs are sure to delight.

  • Simon

Before people jump on me, to clarify, I’m NOT saying this looks like the AU. It’s the peculiar design I’m referring to.

  • Bavarian Missile (.)(.)

Awesome…………..a great read ,cacked myself something fierce reading this, especially about you doing Yoga .

    Love those exhaust extensions……..

  • Iz

I smiled at “..he is no longer my friend” part. Pity BMW gave you a weird beige test car, and not a white one :)

    Otherwise impressive machine.

  • Jimbo

Well I think I will always be in the “what were they thinking!?!?” camp as Simon put it. But that said, I don’t have that kind of money, and it does sound brilliant. Perhaps if my economic situation changes and BMW gives it a proper boot my opinion may change.

  • Bavarian Missile (.)(.)

I would think most people that buy this dont actually fork out 150k for it but lease it . To spend this kind of money on a car, even a personal loan and see your car depreciate year after year must hurt those that cant claim it as a business expense…………..Ive always claimed for my cars stuff giving it to the tax man!

  • Devil666

Yoga? Forests? We don’t even have bears in this country! You say the car has a mediocre 0-100 time (for the price naturally), but the 100-200 is the most impressive representation of the cars acceleration potential. Where might I ask did you find a road with a 200km/h speed limit in the 24 hour period you had the car Alborz?

And why, might I ask, would you buy a car that ONLY excels in this 100-200km/h speed bracket!

Surely you would just wait for the X5 to receive DPC + xDrive? At least then you wouldn’t look like a twat with enough cash to splash around to just go and buy a pointless car. The car is like Michael Jackson, no matter how well it can sing, he’s 40 something and he’s always gonna try hang with the younger crowd and hence stick out like dogs balls. Ergo X6

Even more confusing, why does the X6 exist when BMW have the 5 series GT (PAS or whatever the random they call it) coming out, which fulfill exactly the same purposes (read: EXACTLY) only the PAS (Purposely Aesthetically Shit) weighs a tonne less! It isn’t rocket science.

The fact is, the car is more redundant than Mary Murphy, and if all that this car truly excels at is its’ Scream, they have two things in common.

  • HAL

hmmm, I am gonna go out on a limb here Devil666 and assume you’re not a fan of this car……

  • Bavarian Missile (.)(.)

mmmmmm out of interest what SUV if or do you like Devil,I think Ive read a few other of your posts and you seem to be just as aggressive with your wording on those threads as well.

This isnt an dig at you personally just wondering why so aggressive with you posts ?

  • Jimmy

Devil666 – Can I suggest that you develop a sense of humour? Can I also suggest that you visit carpoint or to get your fix of boring motoring articles if that is what floats your boat? I mean, it would save you a lot of time from reading stories you don’t even like and then writing 200 word reviews on the stories that you don’t like, it would free up a lot more time in your day… you are obviously a busy man.

  • alborz

Devil666, This is a car that many fail to understand, as I said, initially I thought of it as a pointless car, it doesn’t really make sense until you spend a few days with it and realise how much fun it is.

You can’t compare this to an X5, it’s completely different! The X6 has a lot of “cool” factor.

  • HAL

^ Daryl, I guess your comment really begs the question, “Well why the hell do you bother reading this website if you don’t like the style” now doesn’t it?

Just don’t understand how people can take such offence to somehting so inoffensive i.e. a different style of car reviewing. You should take your own box of tissues and go sit in the corner until you get over it.

  • Jimmy

Darryl, or should I say Devil666, I feel sorry for you. Perhaps you applied for one of these positions and got rejected? Who knows, either way, you’re an idiot.

  • Frenchie

My opinion on this car is that the style has grown on me especially from the photos in this article. The decription on how this X6 drive sounds exciting.

However it’s a bit disappointing that the idrive is not up to scratch, the stereo is not as impressive for a vehicle of this caliber, and that the reversing camera is not of good image quality and interferes with the bluetooth.

Overall the car has grown on me though!

  • Bavarian Missile (.)(.)

Quote “God help us if the newbies ever get to a real super car.”

Geez mate perhaps you should check out this thread also by Alborz and apologise cause as far as I know the Veyron IS a Supercar . Yo been invited for a drive by Buggatti yet…….geez!

  • http://skyline The Salesman

The first time i saw one of these on the road it was instantly recognizable as a BMW even though it is an odd shape some how it still manages to have the classic BMW lines. Alborz what was the vision like from inside? Did you have trouble reversing?

  • Camski

Something I see everywhere – “twin-clutch DSG style gearbox”

    DSG = Direct-Shift Gearbox

    so -> ‘twin-clutch direct-shift gearbox style gearbox’

As for the car though, you’d be right about it setting it’s presence. Much the same way a Chrysler 300C or Dodge Nitro would, but also the way that a Maserati GranTurismo would. I say Chrysler 300C and Dodge Nitro because you have your community who just absolutely love the look, while you have the other (possibly majority?) group who wouldn’t be seen dead in one (this is based purely on looks, nothing to do with the mechanics). Then there’s the Masa which you could view from the same perspective as the X6, absolutely stunning.

  • HAL

^ Camski, sort of like an ATM machine (automatic teller machine…..machine) :-)

  • Myke

I’m getting use to the looks, but I still wouldn’t pay extra for this over an X5.

  • Devil666

Ok perhaps my morning coffee was yet to kick in, I SHOULD have started my comment with “A rare miss Alborz”, because this one just didn’t do it for me. Can’t quite put my finger on it but this one just seemed to lack a real substance and eloquence, I also found it a bit off topic. While I understand there’s no frozen lakes in QLD for you to thoroughly thrash the car, was a yoga carpark the next best thing?

Its good to see most of you supporting Alborz after my little rage blackout but hey, hes a big boy i’m sure he can handle a bit of criticism.

BM, I have a soft spot for the Porsche Cayenne Turbo (S?). While oversized brakes compared to the N/A model limit wheel choices and therefore off-road ability, locking diffs all round and low range combined with air suspension and PASM provide a capable yet sporty combination (albeit at double the price).

Jimmy, I want you to write 200 words on why you don’t like other people writing 200 word things.

HAL, if you can’t understand how people get so offended: I find there are many passionate people on this site, why are you still here?

As for the X6, I guess until I can afford one nothing is going to change.

  • HAL

Devil, I’m still here because I like reading and sharing open-minded opinions and constructive debates on various cars. Not straight out attacks on the writers. They are providing a good service, hence why we all seem to keep coming back each day. You obviously missed Daryl post (which has now been removed) and it was even more critical of the article than your comments were. It was unnecessary and my comment was aimed at that one more so than yours. I thought you had just gotten out of the wrong side of bed this morning, whereas Daryl’s was just plain rude.

  • http://integra holstein hore ).( ).(

Looking good ,another niche jobby for BMW , good on em ..

  • Devil666

HAL, my apologies then. I thought that you had misspelt my name and Jimmy was making sure that you were not misunderstood. No Jimmy, I’m not Darryl, and I also didn’t apply for one of the writing positions, although I would have liked to.

  • alborz

    Back on topic please guys.

  • Devil666

Well this thing is going to polarize opinion wherever it goes, but I still think BMW is trying to out-niche itself. I can only imagine the next step is a 3 series based GT PAS. BMW really doesn’t need both the X6 and the PAS.

  • Bavarian Missile (.)(.)

Hey Devil glad you topped up on the coffee since ;)

I doubt anyone would take this off road as the Porsche, just take a look at those tyres ? Nice and quiet on the road just as BMW planned them to be.

Saw a Porsche Cayenne in the car park at school the other day parked next to a 100 series ,these cars really are nothing but sedans with a lift kit under them .

Truthfully none of these cars have the ground clearance to go off road have they ?

Its simply another market BMW wants a piece from Porsche and Merc .

So I guess Alborz is awaiting the M version next in this………….

  • Bavarian Missile (.)(.)

Devil BMW have made no secret they want to own the luxury car market and I guess too do so they have to be all things to all people . I too think its ridiculous to have so many choices, one would think in this current down turn in the world economy that some of the models are really going to suffer if they keep churning out the choices. I mean they are now doing a X1………..why ????????? How the hell they manage to pay for the tooling on all these cars is beyond me , they must take losses on them .Swings and round about I guess!

  • Frontman

Whilst this is not my style, I can see that there is a small market for them out there. I mean the Ssangyong Actyon buyer aspires to a Murano, so now th Murano buyre can aspire to these….

But I just can’t grasp the concept of a high riding, high performance orientated, medium sized (Mondeo, Mazda 6) family hatchback. I do realise that they have sold plenty so far, but I believe it will go the way of the 300c when the new toy syndrome fades.

  • Pious

they arent so medium sized from the outside – absolutely massive (though shorter than my car, but high, and wide). Big turning circle, too – that is something that gets verrrrry tired after a while. Not my cuppa, but love the acceleration, though, and look at all that torque!! Way too quick for a man with no self control like meeself, and I’d reckon with an ecu mod (bye-bye warranty) you could probably get the torque up to 700Nm odd. sweeeeeeeeeeet.

  • Bavarian Missile (.)(.)

hahha I like ya thinking ! Just take them out before you take it back Pious ;)

  • Captain Mainwaring

AAAAARRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHH !!!!!!!! Not that thing again!
Predictably, Bav Mis (+)(+) is the dominant commentator.

  • Bavarian Missile (.)(.)

hahaha Ill pick you up off the floor Captain……..really its not that bad ;) Performance is brilliant you have to admit ?

  • The Realist

    Gorgeous car.

    Nice work BMW.

  • Captain Mainwaring

No argument BM (+)(+) about the way it goes and steers, it’s just the Ssanyong Actyon on steroids look of the thing. But then I suppose while you’re driving it you can’t see the outside.

  • Wheelnut

I think one of the reasons people don’t like the look of the X6 is because it looks like a jacked up sedan..

Which is ironic because BMW are reportedly close to releasing the PAS [GT Concept from at Geneva] which is essentially an X6 thats been lowered to the same height as a regular sports sedan.. and a few other cosmetic changes

  • Andrew M

Ive got those wheels on my XR ha ha ha ha ha

  • Bavarian Missile (.)(.)

mmmmmmmmm who do you think they copied them from smarty? he he he .Same wheels on the X5s before !frown

  • Andrew M

    I know, having a dig.

you can get those wheels on the focus and astra too

  • Bavarian Missile (.)(.)

Knew that too Sunshine…………..antispam word……….BMW .SAYS IT ALL …….. hahahaha

  • Cupid Stunt

“looks have grwon on me”. They have never grown on me. I’ve always found it to be a great car. Strange and quirky yes but fab with it. 17litres/100′s a killer. Buy the diesel donk a save some shreddies.

Yeh those wheels seem to appear on everything sporty lately. Time to move on.

  • Tim

Yuck at the rear with ther HUGE mud flaps…I laugh. Other than that, its a unique car for people who dont care about money. Overpriced with a horrible looking rear….definately a BMW then!

  • Cupid Stunt

Tim -I’ve read all your comments today. You don’t seem to happy about anything at all. What do you drive? Ssangyong by any chance!!

  • darrylTJ

What the hell is the point of having a comment section if you take down critical posts?

All you have left is a bunch of like minded twits all sharing the same tissue box over a what could possibly be a completely crap house car?

And Hal, I skim though this website for industry news, rarely to read reviews. And why not reviews you ask? Cause every review I have read on this site are all the same. None are critical to any degree, and are all designed to either sit on the fence or jump into the lap of industry so they can get a drive in whatever else is coming out.

Journalistic integrity goes the window, and mutton is sold as lamb.

I might as well take advice from the top gear team. They too provide shithouse biased advice, but at least they are funny in doing so.

  • Al Juraj

It’s still hard to justify over an equivalent X5. It looks almost the same up front and shares pretty much everything underneath, but with only four seats and a heftier price tag. The X5, while being relatively practical, is still among the best handling 4x4s around, if not the best, so I don’t find much sense in tapering the rear end and coming up with some coupe/truck whatsoever that pretty much belongs nowhere. It’s no sports car nor will it travel where a Land Cruiser would.

Make no mistake, I love BMWs, but why are they wasting time and money building cumbersome ‘coupes’ such as this and the 6-Series, instead of some R8 killer or 911 fighter?

  • Ben N

One of the ugliest cars ever made! And yes ive seen it in the metal and almost projectiled.
It is essentially the Quasimodo’s of cars, hidious.

  • Seb

    It looks horrible to me………..

  • Be My Worry

It looks clunky. And with so many flaws, it could buy half a house. Perfect accessory for the AIG execs.

  • Stumpy

Now if you look at this from just the right angle it actually looks ………..nah it’s ugly and serves no purpose and is a sad waste of RD wrapped in a turd sandwich no matter how well it goes.

  • nobody

I believe BMW’s purpose in making this car was for people who wanted a further and higher viewing position but not the clumsy driving dynamics of SUV’s (compared to lower cars per se). At first I thought it was a ridiculous idea. Also it looked as ugly as anything I’ve seen and 4 seats? It’s also bigger than a X5 with less boot space. A rear view only abit better than a Lambo, all seemed completely nutters.

After seeing it in person afew times, I now think it looks great. I don’t know why but I do. Most days I drive a SUV (not by choice) and I can understand why certain ppl would like a more exciting drive without sacrificing the driving position. My friends usually appreciate the space and height of a SUV too. Usually I’m on my own during drives so what’s the point of 5 seats?

I’m sure there are plenty of people interested in such a weird idea of a car. Not everyone wants the practicality of a SUV, some just want a similar size car to slay apexes in.

As for the 5 series GT or PAS, it’s actually the most customer focused car they’ve developed. It’s a car crafted from what their customers told them they wanted in a car that was not already in the BMW lineup.

  • Steve-Poyza

This car is all of my dreams summed up. You couldn’t create a more perfect car. I love BMW’s commitment to building brilliant cars. Maybe someday I will have one…

  • Revhed

I admire BMWs guts in building the thing but…

…has anyone sat in the back of one of these for any length of time? I’m shorter than the average guy and I find them very claustrophobic.

So we have a an overweight performance SuV (not much utility) for empty-nesters who want to “make a statement”. Hmmm

  • antoz

    it’s multifunctional car
    it’s real suv
where ever u go x6 will follow u
    i’ts the vehicle i want

  • reconcile

Unlike the quality products out there that have some necessary function this car has none.

Lets face it. These cars will never see the dirt/rocks off road. It will never climb a gutter. The most action it will get is the shopping center car park as some short person struggles to do a reverse park in under 5 minutes

Its merely a fashion accessory for those with more money than sense. The same as a haircut or suit. just much more expensive.

For the same price you could buy two BMWs. A dedicated sports coupe and a comfy sedan. Why buy this monstrosity?
BMW wasted RD money on this crap!

  • Alex

Yeah Jennie, I’m sure the Ford Territory is a nicer drive. Oh wait, no it isn’t. In fact it doesn’t even start to begin to start to compare. Read the plusses; The engine, noise, handling, looks, performance, presence, cool-factor, everything else. I don’t think the Territory has any of those things; except and engine of course, but not one that compares to a BMW twin turbo V8.
Have you driven this car? Well I don’t need you to answer that for me, you obviously haven’t.

  • Luke R

Hi all I’m 29 have two kids age 2 and 5 we have had some fast sports cars and a Mazda cx9 luxury very nice family car.As i have kids i have to adhere to the so called family cars and as a result i find myself disappointed in my choice of cars until i saw this BMW X6 twin turbo V8 thank you soccer mum’s. My wife loves it i love the V8 so we are going to buy one really a nice car but i will admit i will take it off road cause i can, as i took the Mazda and that was a total surprise it went everywhere. And the looks of pure disgust i got priceless.

  • Karl

BMW X6 looks like a male Baboon on 4 wheels, and from a rear view you guessed it a Baboon’s ass.
Looks of pure digust would soon turn into laughter for anyone seen driving this $120,000 dumb expensive beast, why so much engine power given to this i dont understand.
Also the all over curved design of these european safety cars have been round for a longtime now, future new car buyers will want something alot different.
