2008 Honda Jazz

Honda have done rather well with the Honda Jazz. Recognized as one of the better small cars in the market today, Honda is not surprisingly a little scared to change the look of the car that has performed so well.

2008 Honda Jazz

As you can see from the pictures, the new Jazz is easily recognisable as a Jazz. AutoExpress who blessed us with the photos reports that the new Jazz will be the same height as the current model. However it will be 50mm longer and 20mm wider.

The current Jazz already leads the class in interior room, the new shape will be no different with a massive 400-litre boot. In the UK a small-capacity diesel will be available for the first time, it is not clear whether or not the Diesel variant will come to Australia.

Japanese spec cars (which are similar to the ones we get here in Australia), will continue with the 1.3/1.5-litre engines putting out 65/81 kW respectively.

The new Jazz will be on display at October’s Tokyo Motor Show. Expect the Jazz in Australia show rooms by mid next year.

I own a current model Jazz (I call it the Tardis) and I truly believe that it is the best city car on the market.

It’s as economical as a hybrid, more spacious than most mid size cars, reliable as Liberal party scare campaign, fantastic visibility and turning circle… and judging by the minor changes in the 2008 model, there’s not much to be improved upon.

    I agree 100% Foggy
in this market, its either the Jazz or the Mitsu Colt,
    they are both great cars
the CVT in the colt is amazing, does your Jazz come with CVT?

    (Report)

  3. Foggy Says:

Yes, Alborz, the Jazz is available with a CVT (but I have the manual). Interestingly, the CVT on the Jazz gives better fuel economy than the manual.

I drove from Melbourne to Sydney at Christmas with a fully laden car and still managed 5.2 litres/100km.

Conversely, I’m looking at a larger car at the moment with similar flexibility in space management, and of the two contenders, the Mitsubishi Outlander is very thirsty, and the Citroen C4 Picasso Diesel is very expensive…. if only the Jazz was 500mm longer!

I would rather a JAPANESE built Yaris by Toyota anyday.

Time after time when compared by the gutter press the Toyota always win.

If they sold the Fiat Grande Punto for $15k then that is simply the BEST small car on the planet, but @ $20k+ forget it, they are dreaming.

    O/A

  5. Foggy Says:

Well O/A some Jazz’s are JAPANESE built. The Australian Jazz’s from 2005 onwards are maide in Thailand, but I believe that the European Jazz’s are still made in Japan.

I also think that the majority of the Australian motoring press rate cars more on how sporty they are, and how they compare against a sports car.

In reality, buyers of this type of car have no pretence about its performance, they just want a flexible, economical, and spacious runabout to do the day to day work.

The Jazz kills the Yaris when it comes to interior space and flexibility, it beats it when it comes to economy. The Jazz is also faster, but the Yaris handles better, so some feel it’s sportier.

I’ve driven both, and whilst I agree that the Yaris is a very nice car, I’ll take the Jazz any day for sheer practicality.

I don’t know how anyone can say the Yaris has good build quality, I am not doubting its reliable, but have you guys taken it for a drive?

the interior is horrible, its made out of the cheapest material, it looks so depressing just to sit in!

  7. Myke Says:

I doubt the Yaris is actually assembled in JP and if it is, it probably won’t be in a couple of years. As the Corolla is built in South Africa.

The Jazz/Fit meets my needs for everything I need from car and would replace my long gone Cavalier wagon perfectly. I drove a Sport 5AT last year and can’t wait to get one. And I’d get one even if gas was cheap. Would love if it if a diesel was offered, but the US is getting a very willing 1.5L VVT engine. Was very impressed when it pulled away from a Tahoe at the stop light. The rear seats are amazing, and should be a soon copied feature. And the paddle-shift was a blast. My local dealer can’t even keep them on the lot long enough for a test drive now that people are finding out about them. I see both the base and Sport everywhere. Can’t say that about Yaris or Versa.

I live in Singapore and as an aussie I can’t believe how much cars cost. I have come to the conlusion that my family needs a car so I have decided on the Honda 2008 Fit (jazz). This car has just been released in Japan and the private importers have them in stock here. Now the thing is - the shape is different to what is pictured. Although it stills looks like the original is is a bit fatter and wider all around and looks much better than the original. I hope Australia get’s this model but not at the $60k price tag :( I have to buy it for. Specs a 1.3 or 1.5. The 1.3 CVT Auto is quotes as delivering 21km per litre.

  15. Meggs Says:

I am in the process of purchasing a Jazz VT-i Automatic with fitter cruise control (spoilt with having it as standard on my current vehicle) and compared it to
Suzuki Liana, which was the second choice but dealer, was only interested in moving demo models.

Toyota Yaris…Couple thousand more in price. Dealer told me he could have the model I was interested in available for inspection, just call to arrange time. I twice arranged time and was advised they would get one from the storage shed and both times arrived to find they didn’t have the model I wanted to look at…..I walked out.

Nissan Tiida…only thing going for it was price, rear curtain airbag and door intrusion beams, cruise control A/T model. I thought it tinny, noisy and the colour choice blaah.

Kia Hatch…Dealer didn’t have a current model available for me to test drive.

Mitsubishi ….The rear seat were too heavy for me to lift comfortably either from the back or passenger side and were held in place by a ockie type strap which flew of when the seat was put back into passenger position.

Mazda…Dealer didn’t have a hatch model in stock, but I did enjoy driving Neo PP automatic sedan with manual selection.

Holden Astra ……….Too expensive. Had many extra features, but rear passenger couldn’t hear my conversation.

Hyundai…Dealer interested in selling demo modeland had.

    Ford…why would one bother?

Peugot…unfortunately didn’t look at this because of price but whre I am located see many around compaired to Jazz.

I found that the Jazz has the most legroom for rear passenger. Seats fold down gave more useable flat area and the headrests do not have to be removed to achieve this. Fuel economy a must.
The only thing I don’t like about this car is the way the doors are finished and the crease down the bonnet. The crimped finish at the top of the front doors varied from JAZZ to JAZZ I looked at and is rough and sharp in the finished product, compared to the rounded edge design of the Yaris. Rankles me that Cruise control is available on overseas models as are extra airbags for driver and passengers.
I had fun comparing the specification of overseas models and converting o/s prices into Aussie dollars and was amazed that Malaysia’s cheapest Jazz price was $80,000. American dealer fee worked out when converted to less than half what is charged in Australia. Yes, I know location population etc.

Crabby that I will miss the current January specials because my Jazz was sourced in December and arrived 2 January and that the RRP isn’t indicative of what some dealers charge. Fitting cruise control sees me waiting for the incorrect part supplied being replaced when the supplier opens after the Christmas/New Year break. I hope that I will be a very happy Jazz driver when I finally take delivery of my car sometime toward the end of this week.

I am from USA and working in China. I have been shopping for a car for a while. Here are my findings.

Buick Excelle- Are you kidding? I don’t know anyone who drives a Buick even in America. Besides it is actually a Suzuki Forenza

Nissan Versa or Tida - Almost the same price but much worse gas mileage and about the same power

Toyota Yaris aka Vios - Too much like an updated Echo. If I am in my 40’s or older I would choose this car.

Honda Fit - At first I felt the car was too small and didn’t offer enough body protection. But it is a great car that can get the job done in the city.

That picture is not the new Jazz. The new Jazz is a whole lot smarter than that. I don’t know what that is, maybe something to put us of the scent. A simple Google search will turn up pictures of the “real” new Jazz. Take a look.

I live in UK and drive Honda 1.4SE Jazz manual. It is an ideal commuter car with slick gearchange, surprisingly ‘torquey’ engine and the turning circle of a kids trike. Excellent interior space and deceptively large boot. Happiest around town but not too bad on long journeys. Low wind noise on motorway, have found that amount of road noise depends entirely on make of tyres fitted. Averages about 55mpg (5 litre/100 km)out of town and better than 45mpg in town. Quiet and refined at normal speeds, and handles very well - very little body roll in corners. Very reliable, rear wheel bearings seem to be the only problem area, and that happens gradually - not likely to leave you stranded miles from home.
