    He’s right about the dated centre-stack… and most of the car. Can’t wait for the new one.

    If you look to your left of your screen you likely to see the ad of Mondeo Zetec Ecoboost runing-out @ $33990 driver away.
    You can easily get a G6 Ecoboost around the same price (may be even demo G6E). I’d prefer Falcon Ecoboost’s RWD and ZF 6 speeds auto, but I like the idea of Mondeo’s big hatch back.

       Centre stack looks ok to me, what really stood out is the ultra tall gearstick. Seems about twice the height of a normal one.

    Forget about this one and wait for the next year’s model which looks much better. It’s already launched in America as the Ford Fusion. It’s got Mitsubishi Lancer headlights and Aston Martin upper grille.

    even if you could live with the questionable styling or the dated interior, the average fuel consumption of 10.8l/100km is appalling. there a 6 cylinders and SUVs that can give you better average fuel consumption.

    Choosing blue (and also taking shots from those angles) hides the ugly exposed windscreen washer jets on the bonnet very nicely.

    I’ve been driving one of these for a couple of months now and I have to say it doesn’t drive like a dated car the ride, steering and handling are class leading as is the performance. And speaking of the performance it has the low speed torque of a diesel and revs like a Honda. I have the DCT which took a little getting used to, but now find it very smooth, particularly after it warms up. Anthony must have been giving it a boot full because I regularly get under 10L/100km in stop start peak hour traffic and under 7L when cruising. There is more room than the competition, no headroom in a Mazda 6, no legroom in an Accord and the Camry is too boring. Don’t knock the Mondeo until you drive one and at $34K drive away it is very good value. BTW Anthony, I find the seats very comfortable and hold me in very well. Yes the new looks vey nice, saw it at the Sydney motor show and based on my experience with the current one, I would certainly look at one in three years when this lease is up.

    I don’t get why you call it a medium car (maybe you start putting measurements in) because millimetre for millimetre, this car is larger than a Falcon. So if you are using the engine to justify it, that makes a Falcon Eco Boost a medium car too. Other wise I think you’ll find Ford are having a bit of an each way bet here. Which begs the question, what’s going to happen when two cars end up on the market with the same Nose and dimensions at the same time? Falcon update and New Mondeo.

        Golfmother, I have been reading your derogatory comments towards Australian made cars large cars, particularly the Falcon, for sometime now and your opinions offer no substance. Value for money there are few cars on the planet that offer what our locally made cars do. I own two European cars and really enjoy every minute driving them, but seriously, the Falcon and Commodore are brilliant for what you get for the price. I know you love your golf, and I can appreciate that, but I have three in my fleet of company cars and honestly cant wait to get rid of them. Two mechatronic units gone, ECU problems in one and various other nigggling electrical problems that quite frankly I am sick of. Before the VW’s I had three BA MK 2 Falcons and had no issues whatsoever. Granted, sales are down for large Australian built cars, but with various economical engine options for Falcon and Commodores, five star safety ratings and a ride/handling compromise that is near perfect for Aussie conditions, they deserve to be doing much better. So please look at these cars objectively and without prejudice and you maybe pleasantly surprised.

          Maybe you should get a fleet of depreciating falcoons , at least they will be cheap to buy , after three golfs and no issues more than happy .

            Just out of interest – have you had manual or auto/DSG golfs?

            Manual , two friends with DSG and they have not had issues , both diesel 6 speed , not the  7speed , which appears to be the box some have had trouble with .

            I will definetly be looking at locally made vehicles for the fleet next year in March. Im glad your Golf’s have performed well, however, BFYB and from a financial stand point as a business owner – where we need reliable cars that each travel 35000 – 40000 km’s per year its hard to look past our locally made products. Happy Motoring :)

            I would punt on a fleet of 328i’s instead of the crappy falcoon your just buying into trouble , all my suppliers are ditching the OZ bombs , Kia and Hundi see to be the fleet favour these days .

        The biggest problem for the Mondeo, is the Falcon. In so many ways the Falcon is a better car, looks better, tows better and drives better.

      They’ll build the next Mondeo locally and call it the new Falcon – if US can call their Mondeo Fusion why not call ours Falcon.

      If they do please keep the Hatch version…

          Do it the Toyota way. Make a localised EcoBoost V6 version call “Falcon the large car” and EcoBoost four version “Mondeo the medium car”.

          Seen to works OK for Toyota.

      Yes what was big 20 years ago, VS crummer is now medium , bracket creep .

      Packaging has advanced so much that most corolla size cars are more space efficient than  a VH crummerdore and far more economical and drive better .

        It makes me wonder if that’s the real reason the sales of “large cars” are down… are they now too big? Commodore’s and Falcons used to sell by the bucket load when they were the size of the cars which are now selling by the bucket load.

    Its been a while since I read a review on the Mondeo but that Interior I don’t think I could live with that everyday it looks like a 2008 Hyundai in there an update is desperately needed.

    A Falcon ecoboost with Mondeo Titanium stereo etc. and maybe 100-200kgs of weight reduction would be a compelling proposition. But then again, imagine the xr6t or g6et with some weight reduction?

      Actually this should be the best time to buy one. Problems if any, should be sorted. Prices will be cut. Should be possible to get into a pretty nice car for a song.

        so you would’ve bought one of the old model Rangers instead of waiting for the new model as well? by the time the new model arrives they will have worked out the problems (like the cars equipped with the 1.6L ecoboost in the US).

          Yes! I have done that in the past and would do it again. New models have to go through a complete cycle before all the catch ups are complete, especially if you are buying a car from Ford or GM. I specifically would NOT buy a 1.6 turbo in a Mondeo or Falcon, it is to SMALL.  (they go down to 1.1 in the UK) As I’ve said before in this site and others, you need a weight capacity balance, other wise you are working the engine to hard to achieve a result, meaning your economy goes out the window. Two cylinder Fiat 500 for example. Excessively large suck juice and ecessively small suck juice. two ends of the scale for the same result. But one end gives NO performance.

          Also, turboes add an extra thing to go wrong. My preference is for naturally asperated, reasonable capacity motor which can be lazy – thus saving fuel. I may not get a choice in time but that’s for the future.

            Maybe its just me but I couldn’t buy one now if I knew there was an improved and better looking model coming along. Hell no to the 1.6L, I completely agree with you on the right-size-engine issue, I was just using that as an example of issues that should be sorted by the time its on sale here. (Currently driving a FG XR6T, I’d be wanting the 3.5L ecoboost with AWD anyway even though they’ll only give you the 2.0L).
            I read the ‘turbos are another thing to break’ issue mentioned a lot but I’ve yet to talk to someone who has had that problem themselves.

            I agree with you on the 3.5 ecoboost AWD, Trouble is at the moment I think this ridiculously small engine craze is being led by the Euros. I think they get some sort of tax break. Maybe if this gets built here after the Falcon, Ford will go the 3.5 route. Should be doing it world wide, they would have a car and a half to sell then.

            A driver in front of me had a turbo let go once. It was quite dramatic. I’d hate to be in that situation (this was in peak hour so no excessive speed or strain to warrant it) I do realize that the turbo tech has improved a hell of a lot in the 8 years since then.

            Spot on Huwtm, they get smashed on taxes / tariffs for having any engines bigger than a shoebox. I’m suspecting in the same way the ST versions of the Focus and Fiesta took a while to do after the release of the new models, once the Mondeo/Fusion has been rolled out worldwide Ford will then go about doing a ST version of that as well.

    We got a Mondeo Zetec Ecoboost 6 months back.  It was a 2011 model with 8k on the clock (ex Ford exec driven) and paid less than $27K driveway.  Good value that price.

    I admit it’s a good car and does all things well.

    Positives:
    - Roomy (fits 3 Safe & Sound baby seats in the back which many cars cannot do)
    - Very quiet
    - The ride/handling is more ride basis but handles/steers nicely
    - It takes a little to go but once in the midrange goes well (I drive a Skoda Octavia RS TDi DSG and it kicks the Mondeo’s butt especially low to mid)
    - The boot is big
    - Boring but nice to look at

    Negatives:
    - Likes a drink.  Previous to the Mondeo we had a Pajero 3.2 Turbo Diesel Auto. Driving in the same conditions the Pajero was more economical – think a 2.3 tonne brick vs 1.6 tonne car!
    - The LED dash display is useless – no digital speed display and lots of space wasted showing what the stereo is doing!
    - Lots of buttons on the steering wheel doing not much (the new Focus is the same). Look at a VAG car for a simple design
    - You cannot get tyres for it!  We damaged the front left tyre 3 weeks back (its a 215/50 17 with a speed/load rating of 95W) and other than a handful of tyres in Darwin no one has the tyres in AUS. The problem is the speed/load rating of 95W.  Goodyear has 250+ on order from Europe and they’ll arrive sometime mid December……… they hope!

    We drove some Mondeo competitors, those being:
    - Mazda 6 too slow
    - Honda Euro expensive to service
    - Falcon – the Mondeo is better built and the interior is nicer – call the Falcon an older design.  Plus I didn’t want to cop the massive deprecation Falcon’s have

    In the end my missus picked the Mondeo over the others (it’s her car), but I’ll keep my Ocy RS over the Mondeo.

    Would recommend a Mondeo? Yes. But buy a near new model and pocket the savings.

    Interiors really starting to date, but I had a Titanium wagon as a company car, and it was great. I’m really interested in the 1.0 ecoboost version of the next model. If it works well, you can bet VW, Renault et al will be following suit.  Please bring it here Ford Oz, take a gamble, be ahead of the curve because it would have a real USP.

    What is it with the styling of the global Ford models (Fiesta an exception)? They all look like they were penned by Ed Zachary’s twin…. not a good thing.

    I would tend to agree with most of what you say there, from my experience, as I have said above. Except I wouldn’t say it is just roomy, the leg room and the boot is enormous for a car that size. Re the tyres, I’ve looked into that and there are several other suppliers such as Yokohama, Michelin, Pirelli and Toyo who do that size, but that isn’t much use when you only need one tyre and not a pair or set.

      The tyre size isn’t the problem it’s the load/speed rating.  You’ll find most of the tyre suppliers have a load/speed rating of 91V inthe 215/50 17 which isn’t high enough for the Mondeo as it needs 95W.  Bridgestone have 1 tyre and Nexes or something do too but I would have to buy 2 tyres so both fronts (or rears) match, wasting $250 or so.

      Goodyear AUS have come to party though and I’m getting one of tyres from Darwin.

        Yes I know about the 95W rating. I was meaning that when the time comes for new tyres there are alternatives to the Goodyears in the same size and rating. Good luck with the replacement, I hope you haven’t had to use the space saver all that time.

    Correction needed…….Seats do fold flat, you have to tilt the seat base forward first.
