What’s Your Favourite Car?

There is nothing more humorous than passing a highly modified turbocharged car in a Volvo. The V8-engined S80 is one of those cars that for some reason has been neglected. The noise from that engine alone is reason enough to buy the car, but mix that in with the unprecedented safety, all-wheel-drive and a gorgeous interior and you do have to wonder why anyone is buying Mercedes-Benz’s E-class.
Then, there was the Peugeot 207 GTI, the car that made me regret buying my own car. How many Focus XR5s do you see around? How many Astra VXRs do you see around? Meanwhile you have this 207 GTI, which can out-handle, out-manoeuvre and completely demolish the both of them around town, and it’s cheaper!
Peugeot is another of those brands that is struggling to attract new buyers, because of its quirkiness. The important lesson to take away here is if you’re after a new car, there is no reason to not give these cars a go, the popular consensus that European cars will fall apart in five years time is simply no longer true (besides, you shouldn’t keep your car for five years).
The HSV R8 is another car worthy of a mention. While previous generation HSVs have lacked style and good looks, the current LS3 model R8 (and GTS) not only look twice their price but also deliver an exceptional package.
Don’t get me wrong I wouldn’t buy one to go for a mountain-drive but if you want a reborn modern Australian muscle car, this is it. Even bettter, the current tight economic times mean there are now massive discounts from dealerships.
The entire Aston Martin range is absolutely worth mentioning. From having the first Australian drive in the DBS in the UK (and in Australia) to falling in love with the Vantage, the Aston Martin range has been reborn.
No longer can you even consider associating Aston Martins with old English men, seriously, have you watched Entourage? No? Get on to it. The Vantage is the modern successful metro-sexual man’s supercar and for under $300k, it really is a bargain.
Some others that have become favourites in the CarAdvice office. The Nissan GT-R, Audi S5, BMW M3, BMW 135i, BMW 335i, Fiat 500, Ford Mondeo XR5, Ford XR6 Turbo, FPV F6 310 Ute, HSV W427, Hyundai i30, Jaguar XF SV8, Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera & Spyder, Range Rover Sport Supercharged, Lotus Exige S and the mighty Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution MR.
But let’s pause for a second to discuss some of the cars which I remember for all the wrong reasons.

The Fiat 500 has really impressed me, but it is nowhere near my favourite. That title goes to the Nissan GT-R, stunning piece of engineering.
Sorry, why shouldn’t one keep a car for more than 5 years?
If the answer is that it cost more to service etc but wouldn’t that be countered by depreciation already done those years. So the longer you keep it, the cost/year over the age of car gets less?
Is there any other reason? Why not 4 years?
Yeah, I drive a 13 year old EF Falcon XR6 serviced regularly and done 210 000km. $45 000 over 13 years = $3500/year excluding services/insurance etc. Haha need to drive it another 3 years to get it under $3000/year.
Maybe after that I will get a hybrid!
Audi R8 manual – one can dream!
In relation to your oomments in respect to distributors not providing cars for drive evaluations, they have missed the boat – 2009 will probably see the biggest change in brand rationalisation in Australia, and yes while you shouldn’t keep your car for more than five years, what is the resale going to be on the more esoteric brands? Yes I have taken the trouble to look & drive Peugeot and Citroens, but would they be worth anything except to their core enthusiasts?

13yo Car, I suspect its to do with having varying experiences, I try to change cars every 3 years simply to have something different. Why would you want to be in the same car for the rest of your life? That’s like eating cereal for the rest of your life. :P

Well My Dream car is a Shelby Super Snake Mustang with Supercharged 5.4Litre V8 with 541Kw.. A Real Muscle car!
other wise a Ferreri 599 or of Course Bugatti Veryon.

a dream car i would like to see is a NEW GTHO of coarse like every other Fords fans! lol!
give me the keys to an Audi R8 (v10 preferred) and i would love you forever. That as a weekend car and an HSV GTS as a weekday car and a 200 or 100 series landcruiser as a holiday car.
Well when people ask me about my dream car, the answer is always the same!! LearJet 40 XR, you just can’t beat driving at high speed then taking off!!
But if it has to stay on the ground, Lamborghini. Never driven one, maybe I just watched too much cannonballrun as a kid. But in terms of dream car I could possible afford, Lotus Exige! No kids in the back ever! i mean ever!

DBS, without a doubt. But one that is something I could actually justify would be the next iteration of the RS4 when Audi get around to it in a few years. But the most fun car I’ve actually driven for the year was once again my mate’s GTI 180, you’re dead on about that car, working on it is a bit of a prick though!
After much deliberation, I cant decide. If it were ANY car, then obviously it would be the most expensive one I could find which I would then sell and buy the one I really wanted to drive the most. So i would ask for a Bugatti or some rare collectors car and sell it and then spend the millions in cash on a couple of new Nissan GT-R’s and keep use the rest of the money to run them :)
I think the length of ownership is different for each person. I thought I would only own my corolla for 3 years and here I am 10 years later still umming and arring about parting with cash for a replacement.
the Evo X, G6ET and F6 get my top spots followed buy the new Focus XR4 and its little brother and lastly the HSV VE Sportswagon
Very impressed with the FPV F6 for the money. Yes, its not the best car ever, but its a very impressive package, in every regard. Unlike every other australian car ever (yes hsv, this means you and your automatic gearbox or low rent interior) it doesn’t have any major flaws, and in most areas it simply excels.
I have quite a car collection, what I don’t spend on food and clothes goes on cars, petrol, diesel and servicing fees. Of all the cars I own, my favorite is my TDV8 Range Rover Vogue SE. It’s fast (enough), it handles well, it’s so comfortable and quiet, it takes anything I want it to and I can go anywhere because it can go anywhere. It’s characterful, welcoming, tasteful and even quite affordable to run. It’s also packed with features and little luxuries, it’s fantastic. There is no car I would rather climb into every day and there are only a few cars I feel better driving. I miss it, it’s sitting in a garage in Chelsea right now and I can’t wait to get back to it. I love it and that’s why it’s my favorite car.

For a track car, I dont think you can go past the GTR for bang for buck. but the LAmbo LP 640 isn’t far behind :)
I really don’t have a favourite car as such however,I don’t think I could go by cars like the the Gallardo Superleggera,Lambo LP640,430 Scuderia,Porsche GT3 and of course the old NSX Type R.
They all have a few things in common.They rev fairly high,handle beyond my abilities,and most important Naturally Aspirated,so I could hear the unmuffled mechanical”orchestra”behind playing crescendo after crescendo,as I change gears redlining at over 8,000 rpms with each up shift!
I would also throw in the current M3 V8 as well! :)
It would be virtually impossible for a real car enthusiast to have just one all time favourite car.
Because there are so many different styles and types of car built for a different purpose and each with their own characteristics or personality.
You would also have to consider how over the years technology has influenced the a cars design performance and handling etc. other factors include country of origin; from each decade; and of course price range.
Otherwise it would be like comparing apples with oranges
For example I’m sure we all have our favourite Aussie 6cyl Sedan [$50k]; Aussie V8 Sedan [>$50k]; Aussie ute [>$50k]; Aussie Coupe [>$50k]..
The same aplies for cars from Italy Germany France England Sweden; Japan and the USA.
out of the cars iv’e owned and own i have 3 cars i really loved,
the old project that i sold becouse i had no funds to fix it LJ XU-1, I still have the 202 and m21 pluse all the bits for the engine would have been a great first car,
my first car a VB SL/E commodore which had the XU-1 engine in it ( I smashed it, stupid kangaroo,.)
and my Escort it’s quick and hadels brilliantly.

Personally I have found many cars that CA has tested desirable. Some of the editorials even make cheap cars seem good! The one I’m most interested hasn’t yet been release here or for that matter CA tested.
The BMW 330D.
Apart from price (yet to be released) it ticks all the right boxes.
Good looks, power, handling, efficiency, reliability, prestige, comfort, resale (for when the 340D comes along!).

it really shits me when a “professional” or a Professional says something like;
“I don’t think a single day has gone by that someone hasn’t asked me, “out of all the cars you’ve driven, what is your favourite car?” Oh no, not this question, not again. I usually answer; “Have you got five hours to spare? ‘Cause that’s how long it will take to respond!”
like dude, ok you are sick of it. Maybe you should think as well that maybe this is the first and most exciting thing people percieve of your work. Stop being arrogant and conceited and be a little more HUMBLE.

James, when people ask you the same question 30 times a week, it gets a little boring. Specially as there is no answer! You can’t have a favourite car when you love cars. You have a fleet of favourite cars.

For pure driving experience, I’d love to have a Caterham R500. TopGear UK (was there any other?) has it as the 2nd fastest car ever driven around their track by the “tame” racing driver AKA Stig.
My Favourite car: Ferrari California for looks, W 427 for noise, Nissan GTR for the track. SL 63 AMG BLACK looks nice. The current model Range Rover Vogue looks nice and is quite comfortable too, im divided on whether Id take the TDV8 or the super charged V8 – I know th TDV8 is very quick for a diesel – havn’t experienced the super charged version, back to reality a new SSV ute would be nice – or a turbo diesel Hilux would be nice for pulling the ski boat (with an Aussie V8 performance sedan on the side for when I want to go fast!)
Well there’s your answer to that question that so many people ask;
“there is no answer! You can’t have a favourite car when you love cars. You have a fleet of favourite cars”.

or financial planners having people ask them “How do i make money”
it’s all part of the teritory in having a fun, accomplishing, and worthwhile job that the general community appreciates.

Alex has talked me into wanting his Diesel Range Rover…..sounds like a great car.
it is a hard question but i guarantee if all of you drove an FG FPV F6 it would be one of your favorites. There is simply nothing like it anywhere in the world and its levels of refinement and performance really stand it way above anything else ever made in Australia.
I also like it because its not just a bodykit with an engine straight out of a box from the States like HSV, it is a car totally designed and developed here at FORD\FPV. Great car……..

You should read about the new 2009 Porsche 9ff GT9-R?.. Faster than a Veyron and Konigsiegg 1100hp; 0-100Km/h in 2.9seconds.. and only 20 of em will be built.
Engine is from a 911 Turbo with 2 Garrett T-35 Turbos bolted onto it.
The attempt for the worlds fastest car will take place sometime this year on a French Auutoroute – watch out
I agree with you ZF, we all love the F6, its a supercar killer.
I don’t think you can go past the Veyron, sure there’s a few other cars faster, but there’s always been something special about Bugatti. But considering can’t have one here. I’d have a Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Roadster for the weekend, and BMW 335 Coupe for the daily drive…
An new XR6 turbo ute is never far from my thoughts either….

If it had to be a pickup ,I hate to say this but I would love a run in the new 2008 Toyota Tundra TRD,why the States gets a real performance pickup and Australia was left with a low performance Hilux I will never know. I mean a blown 5.7L V8, yielding 504 horsepower . They even look good compared to the Hilux we get here! 0-100 can be archived in 4.4 sec they say ! mmmmmmm maybe ,with perfect traction!

Well Wheelnut, I can finally see why you don’t like Italian cars. Lets just say your design taste is a bit, um, American. However, you have made some simply wonderful choices on your list. Many would say their favourite off roader would be a Land Cruiser when you and I both know that nothing beats the mighty Bowler. And of course the DB9.
PS – Since when was the BMW 135i a hatch? Since when was the Peugeot 407 a cabriolet?

Alex – I do like Italian Cars… Infact One of my mates in Adelaide is the President of the Ferrari Owners Club – I love the look and the soundd of the F360… its just that the M3 is more practical and more fun [100kw per litre].
I also like the Lamborghini Reventon but again there were more practical [German] cars to choose from.
Believe it or not I like the Alfa Romeo Brera V6 and the Alfa GT.. it’s just that Maseratis do absolutely nothing for me.. Sorry!
As for the 407 I meant the 307CC… I like Pugs [the cars not the dogs] mainly because their not as common as Merc Benz SLK Kompressors and the like
Fav car: Nissan GTR nothing better in the market for the price and a real supercar. Although the 98 model WRX was a brilliant car in that era. Never driven a F6 but would like to get a test drive.
As for my “American Tastes” sure I like a lot of the Classic American Cars – what car enthuisiast doesn’t> The design the power and performance..
However; overtime as the Auto Industry developed in not only Europe and Japan but also Australia – the Americans have been overtaken [lapped even] in terms of design and build quality etc.. which is why number of my favourite Modern cars are Europe and Japan – I mean I drive a Subaru Impreza

I just don’t see how a Maserati couldn’t do anything for you. I mean, you don’t have to like the Quattroporte but not even the GranTurismo S? I don’t see how that’s scientifically possible.

Alex – I could say that its not scientifically possible for you to like the GrantTurismo or the 300C or any of the other hideous… oops I mean different looking cars that you seem to like…. Science has nothing to do with it it all comes down to opinion.
I became friends with the President of the Ferrari club because I like Ferrais – it’s that simple. I mean if i didn’t like Fezzas I wouldn’t have gone the the Ferrari Drive Day/Car Show which was open to owners and fans of everything red.. where I happened to meet him now would I?
Cameron If BM and I were as one eyed as you like to believe.. wouldn’t the list of our favourite cars been made up of nothing but our preferred make of car?
A truly one eyed fan believes that there is nothing better than the cars from his/her beloved marque and refuses to accept the fact that there are other car manufacturers in the world.. as to do so could upset the status quo in their own little world..

Therefore; in order to be involved they constantly take the discussion off topic.. not to mention the fact that should someone say something negative about said brand they launch into a tirade of personal insults and attacks.. as it just can’t be true that the cars made by “X” are inferior or unreliable etc.
Whereas a real car enthusiast knows about a wide range of things to do with the Auto industry – it doesn’t necessarily have to be that extensive or detailled etc.. that they are a virtual walking encyclopedia

That’s exactly it Phil – Sure I personally prefer Holdens but I am willing and able to accept that there are other cars which [in certain ways] are better than some of the cars Holden make/sell – the FG XR6/ FPV F6 and XR-5 Focus for example.. and I commend them for it.
I also accept that you can’t realistically logically or scientifically compare a Holden to a BMW.. However; its okay to use them as a benchmark [everyone does it] as they are the innovators of the Auto Industry
To be fair Wheelnut, I don’t think the 300C is beautiful, I think it’s well designed and handsome, especially if you look at it’s predecessors. And considering the number of people who think the GranTurismo is a magnificent looking car (not me but some actually think it looks better than a DB9 or a Vantage) outnumbers the ones that don’t by quite a lot, I think you’re the one with no eye for design, especially considering many of the cars on your list. I think saying the GranTurismo is hideous is really taking things too far, it’s one of the best looking cars on sale.

What a load of tripe crock. Being a car enthiasist does not mean one out and out tugs at forelocks of one car maker. For example………..i30 goes to top of its heap, Fiesta goes to top of its heap and just because they are unreal doesnt make the Sonata high on my list or Falcon that significant a jump above others even though it is step in right direction. 99% on here are stuck in rut of supporting one car maker out and out so before one points finger at Toyota…………….look around at yourself.

Car enthusists who go to the races and pay there money to support there favarite make are true car enthusists in my opinon,those don’t have a fav car and just look at the lines and designs of cars should,reaily go to art school instead
Car enthusiasts who go to races expect to see a splattering of cars competing as Red and Blue is not a “broad” spectrum of cars is it and are thus pretenders and wannabes! The real test is when it was before Red versus Blue and those were good days as simply put it attracts a better field of cars and drivers “worldwide”…..yet what have we got instead is a farce and yet is taken overseas and eliminates a wider field and captive audience.
Its only short narrow minded wannabes who counter argue that. Who wouldnt want to see a bigger spread of cars in ARTC and JAMES HARDIE………….I do! Yes I would support Ford………..but Iam a “REALIST” as some of there cars are poor lines and ugly and not best in class. I suggest some others on here go back to Romper Room and do fingerpainting and try to work out lines……LMAO

I don’t know about the art based minority of Car Enthuists,but the majority of CE’s have a favorite make, every major racing series would probobly colapse if people were not allowed to support a make.And i suppose Mark skaife because he supports holden is a wannabe,along with Dick Johnson(Ford) and Michael Schumacher(Ferrari).I reckon art based CA are the wannabes.

NM – I ‘d like to see more manufacturers in the Australian Touing Car Championship – known as the V8 Supercars.
Contrary to popular belief [of those who prefer a couple of Japanese manufacturers] All manufacturers are able to compete provided they meet the current rules regulations and criteria set down by AVESCO.
Which as it stands says that essentially the cars must be based on large family sedans that are buil tin Australia are are RWD. The cars must use a Pushrod 5.0 Litre V8 which produces 620-700bhp.
If they can do that then I can’t wait to see them at Bathurst.. probably won’t be cheering for them though

Onya Alborz for lambasting Toyota, a site sponsor, for their TRD effort. AWD TRD Aurion could have been a successful niche vehicle, or similar Corolla. And thumbs down to archauic execs not realising the power of the internet and restricitng their fleet vehicles to hard copy journalists.
I think you have just about got it right in your summary of 2008. I’d like to have seen some Porsche product mentioned, particularly the GT3 RS, but perhaps you didn’t review it personally.
And while turning cars over every 5 years or less is desireable, it’s not exactly affordable for all of us, which is a shame. We’ve bought two new cars in the last 5 years, but suspect the finances will go to competing interests in the coming years.

Duck – it is a 02 Subaru Impreza RS 2.5 Litre 4cyl Automatic Sedan – The Bug Eyed model.
Which I believe is better looking than virtually every model Impreza since then.. particularly the current one.
Modifications – apart from a $2k “Custom” Alpine In Car Entertainment System.. I have added a K&N Air Filter Cold Air Intake Bosch Perfromance Spark Plugs etc.. the engine now produces approximately 140-150Kw.
I am planing to upgrade the brakes to DBA premium cross drilled ventilated rotors with 4-pot calipers
Why a Subaru and not a Holden – when I was looking for a new car the Subie was the most affordable and economical car available with the features that I wanted and was most suitable to my needs.
Prior to that I owned a VL Berlina [which I made a few similar mods to[ It was an awesome car with its 6 cylinder engine and is one of the reasons I cant understand why Holden switched over to an outdated V6
No there is nothing wrong with that, I was just wondering.
I prefer the facelifted model than the bug-eyed (03-04 model) one to be honest and the one before the new generation.

I have a V6 VT Acclaim Commodore Wagon with 253,000 kms on the ODO and even though the Ecotec engine was not as good as the in-line six like in the VL Commodore, the Ecotec engine is a very reliable engine, which other people will agree.

Aside from the R8 Audi (Euro diesel powered), the Skoda Octavia RS CDI wagon ofcourse…especially the blue ones, with the go fast stripes and chrome roof racks…special!
Ooh I missed this. Favourite cars, well you gotta have two choices. One you have driven and one you dream for.
For me: -
Driven – would be an Audi A6 Avant – good solid car, economical, cheap to own. Closely followed by Fords Mondeo (a great workhorse).
Dream Car – Audi R8 with a diesel donk if poss.
Porsche 917K
Currently the best car in Oz is the Ford F6. Just faster than all the other aussies tin cans out there. But waitin on the new falcon GTHO which will be in the top 10 as best car in the world.
