The 2013 Opel Astra GTC has been spied undergoing testing in Europe, with black plastic camouflage disguising a new front-end design for the updated compact coupe.

Our latest spy shots reveal the facelifted Opel Astra GTC three-door will feature a larger front grille similar to that of the mid-sized Insignia, as well as a redesigned lower grille and front side air intakes.

The larger openings are expected to pave the way for Opel to equip the GTC with the brand’s new twin-turbocharged 2.0-litre diesel engine, which produces 143kW of power and a stonking 400Nm of torque.

The rest of the exterior looks set to carry over from the current model, which has been on sale in Europe in mid 2011 and launched in Australia in September 2012.

The upgraded GTC, expected to reach showrooms early in 2013, comes a few months after Opel refreshed the styling of the Astra five-door hatch and Sports Tourer wagon.

Opel Australia’s showroom currently includes the Astra, Astra GTC, Insignia and Corsa models. The GTC-based Opel Astra OPC hot-hatch will join the line-up in February 2013, with similar tuned-up OPC versions of the Corsa and Insignia also believed to be on the way in the near future.

Good idea covering the Opel badge. Who would have picked it as an Opel?!

  • aaaaplay

Those are Saab 9-3 Turbo X alloys

The headlights look like Toyota 86.

So when are we gonna get it? In 6 years?

    • NoFear

      Really ???

Opel Astra GTC was introduced earlier than Toyota 86.

    Looks Asian not European

What this thing needs is an interior-lift.

It also desperately needed a bigger grill – which it looks like they have hopefully fixed

      • NoFear

Low front grill is typical for current Astra range, I think bigger grill is better for other models like Cascada or Insignia.

Look at the Opel ad, the Big grill is below the bumper. That top thing is just decoration and should be removed not enlarged.

The Hawkeye is a design that was part of what won Opel the RED DOT award before the 86 was heard of – you guys are such BS merchants

Sorry for insulting your boyfriend. I didn’t mean to get personal with you.

It was just a simple remark, a wrong one as it turns out. No need to get personal, buddy.

Yeah – not surprised that the 9-3 had Opel wheels – Another GM Europe division destroyed by their US parent – at least Opel has the innovative brains – the only reason GM couldn’t afford to sell it off

  • lee

Well, China and Russia are massive Opel buyers
