Run Clarkson Run

November 7, 2008 by Alborz Fallah

In the latest Episode of Top Gear (Season 12) which aired last week in the UK, Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson made a joke about truck drivers being murderers, in reference to UK truck driver Steve Wright who was convicted of murdering prostitutes earlier this year.

Run Clarkson Run

Unfortunately, as is the case these days, not everyone saw it as a joke. So far the BBC has fielded thousands of complaints from angry truckies.

The remark can be seen in the video below:

For a little bit of fun an online games developer has come up with “Run Clarkson Run“. Truckies can now commit digital murder by watching an animated Clarkson get hit by a truck.

It’s much more fun though, to simply control Clarkson as he runs for his life.

I’d be willing to bet that more complaints have come from miserable humourless people desperate to complain about something than actual truckies, who probably found the comment to be quite funny.

I’m sorry I don’t agree with any of the above comments. Clarkson was out of order on this one. OK I for one appreciate a joke and will always laugh This was insensitive to those who were savagely killed by a mindless moron and those professional truck drivers, the majority of which decent family men/women.
MP’s here have called for Clarkson head, I think that’s a step too far where a public apology should suffice.

Thats all very well Neo but if you set out to watch a family entertainment show you should not strictly expect to get shocked by ill-thought comments. Like I say these celebrity presenter seem to be a law to themselves. When my young son (9yr old) who loves top gear asked me “why do truck drivers kill prostitutes, what is a prostitute” then the content is inappropriate don’t you think.
For the record I was not one of the many who made a formal complaint but I didn’t laugh when that particular line was made either.

Tomas79 – everybody enjoys a joke and yes Clarkson is a bit of a character/comedian. However; the key to being a popular comedian is not only the delivery of the joke but also having the ability to read your audience..

Given that the joke was about a murder case which had received nationwide coverage in the UK it would be considered by most to be a sensitive issue… the tragic loss of life is no laughing matter

Professional comedians know this which is why at the time of Princess Di’s crash; The columbine disaster; or Port Arthur… none of the professional stand up comedians made jokes referring to them at the international comedy festivals that were on that year

Jokes are usually quite general – that is they don’t often refer to a particular individual etc.. but for clarkson to make a joke like that at the time when it was a current issue was insensitive – had he waited until next year sometime or the case was over the reaction might have been different.

Here is something from the news that was said about the bastard that did it!

Quote” FORKLIFT truck driver Steve Wright has been found guilty of murdering five prostitutes during one of the most intensive killing sprees in British criminal history.

Wright, 49, had asphyxiated the five drug-addicted women, leaving two of their bodies in a cruciform position with arms outstretched.

The corpses were found dumped at rural locations around the town of Ipswich within the space of just 10 days. “”

So we have found out that Tomas79 finds it funny to make jokes about serial murderers etc… therefore; its safe to assume he also finds things like emphysema gonorrhea chlamydia and syphilis equally as funny

I’d love to see Tomas go into a busy truckstop roadhouse or pub one night out near Broken Hill for example and yell out “all truckies are poofters.”

Then he would see how funny it is to be murdered by a Truckie

the only truckies who would be offended would be truckies who are actually murderers. since 99.9999% arent. so no biggie.

      says:

Maybe so but when the joke relates to a current murder investigation by the police which has received widespread media coverage along with a court case that is likely to be heard/decided by a jury.

One of the jurors may think clarksons joke was funny and the charge isn’t all that serious.. which could influence his/her decision instead of listening to the facts.. and let the FORKLIFT DRIVER off – it does happen despite jurys being locked away [in hotels] during high profile cases

If that happens the public prosecution could appeal the decision based on the likelihood that clarksons joke had an impact on the verdict.

Not only that but; How would you like someone to make a joke about the death of your mother father brother sister or cousin etc if they were to be murdered in a similar/horrific way?

If you’re offended by nudity, don’t watch porn. If you’re offended by bad acting, don’t watch Home and Away. If you’re offended by violence, don’t watch Die Hard. Because of Top Gears propensity to make jokes in poor taste, it is NOT suitable for children. This is not the first time Clarkson has made a joke in poor taste and it won’t be the last. To make Top Gear family-friendly would be to rip out its soul.

To Bavarian Missile: did it ever occur to you that someone reading this website may have had a family member injured or killed by a missile in Barvaria during WW2 and could therefore be offended by your candid use of the term ‘Bavarian Missile’ as your alias?

Wheelnut, why would I call truckers at broken hill poofs?? That’s just plain stupid!!
A typical truckie couldn’t care less, just like Clarkson calling “Australians and Americans” underdeveloped nations, in the same episode… That’s funny, and only the saddest whining princess would have issue with that!!

The comments really are no more offensive than the ninemsn news headlines which make a joke of and trivialise serious issues every day. Yes, probably unfortunate that kids are exposed to some of the comments. The truckies do need to toughen up a little, though (wouldnt say that to their faces!) – you should try being a lawyer some time, and cop the lawyer jokes non stop! As for yabbering complete shite – most of the time truckies [particularly long distance/interstate truckies] are usually catching up with fellow truckies – where they are; where they’re headed what they’re driving what they’re carrying

as well as warning them of highway patrols; speed cameras accidents and other traffic problems etc…. not news or current affairs with the possible exception of sport
