Awesome job  Alborz Fallah.  You got this one up early.

  • Rd

    Local car industry dead!!!
We all know about the demise of the Falcon and the Commodore but a bigger worry for Holden is the crash in sales of the Cruze. No coming back from here, just a steady decline until plant closures in 2014 (Ford) and 2016 (Holden).

    • Mark Kevin

Sounds like you’d love the sound of that…

    • Dave S

Whichever why you look at it, Holden is still the largest builder of Australian cars. More than Ford more than Toyota. If you add Commodore ute sales to Commodore the numbers are better. The Camry and Aurion combined with a new model cant even olt sell the Ve Commodore. The Cruze sales are just icing on the cake.

Throw in exports of the VE / VF around the world supported by GM US. Sales are down, but times are positive. Keep in mind that the Ve Commodore represents the (excluding the Prado) the most expensive and oldest car in the top 10.

      • Dingo

att : Dave S – your comment is factually INCORRECT !

Because of Toyota’s sizeable export regime to the Middle East - the Big T infact manufactuers more cars in Australia each year then Holden.

Please – stick to writing factual information and not factually incorrect rot.

        • Darryl

          Exactly!

        • Dave S

People need to relax. How about ‘builds more cars in Australia that are registered here’?

Either way, the industry has a lot of life left in it.

      • BK

17,780 Toyotas and 8936 Holdens. I don’t see how those figures show Holden is the largest builder of Aussie cars. Toyota has been Number 1 for a long time and Holden  wont beat that record.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Richard-Joash-Tan/100000351085371 Richard Joash Tan

you are just dumb because I’m defending Holden’ reputation

      • Darryl

As of right now where is the VF exported to? They did sell 500 Caprice PPV’s in July, which is gradually improving, and around about that number are sold in the Gulf states each month. Then a few Commodores across the Tasman. Where else around the world of any consequence? Toyota sells 5000 Camry’s each month in the Gulf alone. Commodore sales were the third worst on record in July, and Cruze sales are way below expectations. Holden once said they wouldn’t mind if the Cruze overtook the Commodore to become the country’s number 1 seller. I don’t think so. Not when it’s being outsold by a Hyundai that is only available as a hatch. The picture is hardly rosy for GMH. Time will tell how many Chevrolet SS’s they sell in the States, given it will already be basically 7 years old (as the VF is only a facelift). Good luck to them anyway.

        • Phil

In a good month, they sell 1 or 2 Vauxhall VXR8s in the UK!

        • Sydlocal

I can easily tell you how many VFs are exported. None. Exactly the same as the number of VFs Holden sell in Australia because the VF hasn’t even been released yet…. ;-) ;-)

  • Doctor

And yes, Saab did sell one! At this rate it’ll be out of stock by the end of the decade. ;-)

    • Amlohac

Could have just been dealer registered, which means its still rotting away in a car yard somewhere.

  • PIZZA

Hoorey!!  Another 581 lemon sold this month!

    • Sumpguard

      Ex-Passat owner?

What’s more amazing (to me anyway) is that it outsold the Accord Euro. It shows that our market like to see a major refresh in styling every few years so we don’t look like we are settling for second best despite the fact the Euro is a damned good car.

Commodore sales reflect the fact the last upgrade should have had a headlight/tail light change. We are a vain lot here in OZ.

      • Hemi hammered

I agree with you about the Euro. It is a damn good car and i do think its close the best looking in its segment.

      • Andrew

How many of those Passat’s would be wagons? 80%?
If they sold the Accord Euro wagon here Honda would be selling a stack of them.

        • 3D4

          That is so true..

        • Able

If they sold the diesel Accord Euro wagon here***

I couldn’t agree more. I see more Skoda Superbs than (new) Passats and even they are mostly all wagon. Honda are very stupid in not bringing the wagon here. Even NZ have them!

Sigh. Maybe the next generation model? The current one is rather tired…

      • Ben

they ran out of accord euro base models due to the $29990 deal. I purchased one of the last of them at the end of june, they said there was a 6 week wait until the next lot came in

        • Antmindel

Honda have sold out of Euros at the moment, and dealers are fighting for more stocks, but have to be patient,as on the waters from Japan.
The Euro is WAY better than the Passat or any other VW,I had a Jetta which was very disapointing,as it was a rattle trap.
Replaced it with a Euro, and it has been an absotlute pleasure to own.

  • Sumpguard

I’ll probably start world war 3 but where is the cruze?  The styling is now a few years old and there is plenty of fresh product out there but where is it? To me Mazda 3  is dated also and a pretty ordinary drive so outdated styling can’t explain away all of it.
Wow how times have changed. hyundai within a sniff of Holden and very close to Mazda. That’s probably the first full month of sales for the i30 also? They’d have to be happy with that. I’ve seen quite a few on the road up here and it is a good looking car.

We are in for a bumpy few years ahead and unless the next commodore is truly exceptional and/or they have a supportive parent company our local industry will consist of just Toyota. Until of course they follow suit due to no local manufacturing base to support them with parts. Then there will be these huge sheds ready to be transformed into freight depots and a part of what I grew up with will be gone for good (not literally).

Can you believe that the Cruze doesn’t offer air cond climate control not even on the SRi & SRi-V? Panoramic sunroofs or even plain sunroofs are not on the options list either. The cabin interior looks shabby when compared to the new Elantra & especially the new i30. On the exterior the Cruze looks dumpy against the Elantra. The incredible specs list & especially the sat nav & panoramic sunroof on the new premium i30 blows away most small cars. Jap cars – Civic, Corolla & 3 need to up their game. New Cerato also looks incredible.

      • Vti07

I agree that there are poor or inconsistent specifications of many cars for the Australian market. For example the civic hatch has paranomic roof , navigation and Hid’s , radar cruise, active high beam as options in UK but not in Australia.
Not everyone wants to drive a poverty pack…

Jap cars will up their game once their sales quota gets bad. If people still buy in droves for something less superior in package why fix it.

  • Gan Tan

I’m predicting i30 will take 2nd place in segment once more cars appear on the road

    • Sumpguard

      I tend to agree.

    • Force-15

I’m not sure about second place but the i30 might start nipping at the heels of the Corolla. Keep in mind that the latter is supported by fleets and rusted-on Toyota devotees (for want of a better word). as for the Mazda 3 car buyers will still be flocking to it in droves.

      • Hsv

The i30 is the top fleet car..

        • Sumpguard

Can you show me the figures where you saw that please? Up here they are i20′s and corollas for the most part so I’d like to see where you got that info please.

        • bd

The Hyundai Getz – sure, but not the new i30.

Fleets like em cheap and reliable and the i30 is not cheap (at least not like the Corolla).

          • Patto

Getz? There are no more Getz.

          • bd

            I know.

I’m talking about the Getz when it was being sold.

  • Dingo

    OH WHAT A FEELING … TOYOTA !

  • Gcrf

    #1 TOYOTA

    #2 DOES NOT MATTER

    That’s what it seems like

  • Andrew M

Just to weigh into the Whos hurting debate, Ill tell you its all of them equally, and for different reasons.
The obvious is Ford because of their low sales numbers, But dont forget they sell a lot more upper spec vehicles and the Territory which has better margin. Ford also dont have the over heads or employee numbers of Toyota or Holden.
Sure their volume is lower, but the slightly lower volume is dont with much less staff.

Holden, They employ a lot more staff than Ford yet sales volume of larger vehicles is similar.
They also have the Cruze which was promised initial Gov Funds with the intention to continue support, but the Gov has since scrapped the scheme. Their is lower margin in the Cruze. You cant tell me a small car for 20K has the same margin as a commodore for 40K

Toyota, Because most of their production he is export, the Aussie dollar being above $1 US versus 65cents has nearly halved their revenue.
They have also said they were hurting.
My Guess is it is the imported models Also propping Toyota Aus at the moment

  • Schn

Hyundai may possibly take 3rd place in the near future by the looks of it. Not too far off Holden either. Rather dismal month for Lexus which is interesting. Competitors sold at least double.

    • bd

It’s interesting to see Kia so far behind Hyundai in sales when they are much closer together in NA, Europe and Korea.

It hurts Kia not having a smaller mid-size model like the Hyundai i40 and not bringing the new cee’d over, but the new Forte should begin to close the gap.

      • Sumpguard

Stock has been their biggest issue, or perhaps a close second to an ignorant    market that think toyota is the only brand on earth.

Sportage are now starting to free up and this is reflected in sales. Same with the up spec rio models. I’ve see na few up here with the foglights and they are factory order which I personally think is hurting sales. Not everyone can wait for their car to arrive. Kia should have these  up spec models in showrooms.

I’ve seen a couple of the lower spec Optima on the road too in recent weeks and just having it out there will help them because it is a fantastic looking car and from reports it isn’t a bad drive either.

When the new Cerato (we don’t have the forte) lands they will be harder to ignore. If they get the steering and ride right it will most likely be my partner’s next car as it will arrive just as her’s goes out of warranty early in the new year.  We were considering th RIO but an upsize is now most likely.

The majority seem to think that buying a toyota is one of life’s must do’s despite the overall consensus in the motoring world being that “most” of their models when compared to the opposition are “average”. I don’t personally see the value in higher resle when the ownership experience is mediocre and you pay more for what you get to begin with.

            But that’s just me.

        • Zzcc

Yeah and you think Hyundai/Kia are some sort of world class vehicles hahaaa?

          • bd

Maybe not “world class, but they have regularly done better than their Toyota counterparts in comparison tests in both NA and Europe.

And the Hyundai i40 was the 1st car by an Asian automaker to win the prestigious EuroCarBody Golden Award – so they are getting there.

          • Xxc1

What does the i40 have that is noteworthy? What does Hyundai as a brand have or have done that sets them apart? Exactly, nothing..

And last time I checked, there was a i45 & Accord Euro right next to each other and after some substantial comparison between them it was clearly evident that the Accord-euro was simply the superior car..

That’s just some food for thought there..

          • bd

            @dd5170ce13c0653a219d210b99ac1951:disqus

Why are you comparing the i45/Sonata to the Euro Accord/TSX?

The Sonata is the equivalent to the USDM Accord, not the Euro Accord/TSX – which would be the i40.

            A bit disingenuous there.

And the Kia Optima is generally seen as being the better overall vehicle than either the USDM Accord and Sonata, much less the Camry.

        • bd

The Forte is the other name for the Cerato.

What the AU and NA markets don’t get is the cee’d.

  • MisterZed

lol – Dodge Journey isn’t a people mover, it’s an SUV.

  • Luke Brinsmead

Volkswagen is onwards and upwards, doing surprisingly well compared to other euros.

  • LN

    6155 people bought Nissans?

Those poor people wasting their hard earned $$$$$ on a crappy Nissan.

    • Smk

370z & GTR are not crappy

      • Phil

Except no one buys those particular models as they are too expensive

    • Legnab

I agree put your money down on a bogan crummerdore .

  • Toyhundi

While most of the duscussion is focused upon Toyota, Ford, Holden and the Koreans, I think another important point is Mitsubishi. Nothing regularly in the top ten anymore and falling to 8th in the monthly sales. What is going on there?

    • Phil

For what reason do Mitsubishi deserve to sell well?

Year in year out Mitsubishi gets bottom scores in all the reliability AND satisfaction AND desirability surveys.
All their cars are awful. Some of the models are ancient like the Express which has barely changed for about 30 years whilst the Pajero has barely changed for almost 15 years (and both were terrible when they were released let alone today).

    • Dave S

Such low sales – i bet they wish the 380 was back.
