2015 Ford Mustang: early test mule spied

An early Ford Mustang test mule has been spied testing parts likely to be seen on the next-generation 2015 model, a car that will mark the 50th anniversary of the classic Pony car.

The Mustang’s next-gen clues are dominated by the spied rear control arms that indicate the mule is running independent rear suspension in favour of the solid rear axle previously used on every ‘Stang before it.

The bulging, camouflaged fuel filler door – a common sight on early development mules – indicates a change in the chassis’ hard points. Other hints include the A-pillar-mounted gauge pod likely measuring boost pressure or vacuum pressure, and the cut and modified lower-half of the rear bumper surrounding the exhaust.

There also appears to be a structural difference in the roof with the Mustang mule having a large gap on either side of the roof panel that looks as if it’s been filled with some sort of filler or putty.

Our spy photographers assured us that while no shots of the front of car were snapped, the mule sported no changes, appearing identical to the current Ford Mustang GT.

The next-generation Mustang is likely to appeal to some with its Evos- and Fusion-based looks, intended to appeal to Generation Y, while others will have to come to terms with the iconic car shying away from its muscle car roots, including the likely shift to a new EcoBoost twin-turbo V6 engine from an old-school V8.

nice… but whats the point looking at $30k or so car… never reaching Oz shores and when gray imp. brings them they cost 3x more… its like living in the communism…

    • MichaelLock

Didn’t they indicate this next gen mustang will be produced in RHD and maybe a good possibility for Oz?

      • Shak

I thought the reports said it WOULDN’T be produced in RHD? Ford have such a awesome opportunity here to make the Falcon competitive on cost but they wont.

        • Rocket

I have read that Ford plan to sell Mustangs into RHD markets like Japan and the UK as part of their Global strategy. Would be great for Ford Australia if RHD Mustangs were made alongside the Falcon for export markets but whether it is commercially viable is another story.

          • Mahmoud

If they build them factory RHD its all that matters. We can then import them from UK where we can buy them cheap. If Ford sells them here then we will pay too much for them. Better that we can just import them from UK.

What communism, …you would not have a clue what is it, only from propaganda.

      • Smart US

         i bet u still carrying the bitterness…

Irs maybe this is the car that the falcon shares a platform with.

Fords SVT tuners managed to get the live axle mustang to keep pace with an M3 around a circuit, I’ll curious to see what they can get out of an IRS package.

  • MM

Why is that a $26,000 drive away no more to pay Ford Escape could have independent suspension. But the live rear axle Ford Mustang can’t have independent rear suspension because it’s too expensive?

  • BrisVegas

The Mustang has been all about the 1/4 mile and heritage.  Live axle suits this just fine.  I wouldn’t be surprised if aftermarket shops will do live axle conversions for the new breed of Stang.  It’d be great if Falcon shared the platform with Mustang down the track, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.

It’s like retrofitting a carburetor to a fuel injected car. Who’s dumb enough to do that? Oh wait, people still buy Commodores.

  • F1

Seriously Ford’s Ecoboost 3.5L V6 is extremely good..

Ford Taurus & F-series make use of it.

It takes the almoat 2-tonne Taurus from 0-60mph in 5-seconds! Stock form..!

  • JamesB

Correction, late model SN97 Mustang Cobras already wore IRS. Ford just gave this rubbish excuse of current Mustangs costing $5,000 more each when fitted with modern day suspension.

We need the Mustang’s bodyshell. They need our Falcon’s chassis. I also did read that they’re trying to make the new car much lighter than before. This ought to appeal to Europe as well, as this car can be a lot better than it is now. Rumour has it that it will have RHD versions as well; hopefully it’s finally true. With our awfully high costs of keeping cars on the road, we must have heaps more variety in vehicle choices.

  • Pirate Post Office

If the current Mustang was imported by Ford it would be a hit as long as it was not over the odds price wise. The failure of the old Mustang in oz was due to high prices and quite frankly a poor product… So what do Ford do, pass on a killer product… Go figure.

Let’s see if Ford can bring the next gen car here.

It is still unclear whether or not the IRS in this mule is a variant of Control Blade (used by most Ford passenger cars now including the Falcon) or a new version. It does have alloy control arms though. It does not appear to be the same as the old DEW98 IRS unit.

I know this might be an out there suggestion and don’t shoot me down for it but with the large gaps on either side of the roof could this be the same or similar dimensions to the Falcon roof line??
I’m probably wrong but I thought I would put it out there what with the Stang getting the IRS as well

When you have USA idiots advising that every one wants front wheel drive crap we will only get these. The dropping of the Falcon goes to prove the Yanks do not what a good car is or how to build one, the best thing the yanks could do is take the Falcon and fit a Mustang body to it then we and the yanks could have two vehicle for the price of one. A least the yanks may get one decent car.
