Mitsubishi Mirage production begins

MITSUBISHI MIRAGE

Mitsubishi Motors has commemorated the start of full production of the all-new Mitsubishi Mirage with a line-off ceremony at its Laem Chabang Plant in Thailand today.

Mitsubishi’s new Mirage – the company’s “global compact car” – has been designed to meet the needs of both the fast-growing emerging markets who want affordable entry-level cars and advanced markets that demand environmentally conscious models.

The Thai-produced Mirage, which went on sale domestically on March 28, will roll out of Mitsubishi Motors’ largest plant outside of Japan before being exported to other ASEAN markets, Japan and Europe, with Australia seeing the Colt-replacement arrive in early 2013.

The 1.2-litre MIVEC Mirage has received 15,000 orders in Thailand, with the car’s combination of 4.5 litres per 100km fuel economy, low CO2 emissions and space for five clearly winning buyers over.

Once it reaches our shores the new Mitsubishi Mirage will have to fight the Toyota Yaris, Mazda2 and headline-grabbing Suzuki Swift for sales.

The front end looks okay I guess but the rest of the car looks mighty boring. If that’s how its going to look in the Australian market, it’ll have the same poor run as the Colt did. Theres no enthusiasm in that design what so ever and thats sad given some of Mitsu’s other cars

  • Kampfer

You sure the pictures are not from the 90′s?

The “new” Colt looks so dated before it’s for sales.

    • JooberFPVGT

Completely agree, this design is looks like its going backwards.
That side profile makes it looks like the Mazda2 poor cousin.

  • KC

Its more likely to compete with Alto rather than Swift, Fiesta, Rio etc. Looks quite average!!!!

    • Zel

Yeah, I was thinking it looked small enough to compete with the Alto, Micra, etc.

  • pixxxels

This has gotta be the most dated new car design in automotive history

    • Guest

Like the new DM3 (Dowdy Model #3) Civic.

  • Louisb

Nah, in my opinion the front looks pretty good.. but the front and back.. nooooo why Mitsubishi.. why. They Had a really nice design language with the MY07 Outlander and the Lancer.. Y U no stick with that.

    • Louisb

      *back and side.

  • Westie

When I saw the pic of the front, I thought “that’s not as bad as I remember the first pics”
Then I saw the side photo…
If its meant to be a competitor in “developing markets” ie cheap, it’ll probably be as tinny and fragile feeling as the Colt.
Shame. If they’d kept developing their previous (Lancer / Outlander) design language, it could have been a sharp wedge with some b@lls to its style.
Still, I suppose somebody has to keep Proton, GM DAT and the Chinese company in the “money is the only thing” end of the market.

    • Matt

Have you ever driven a colt? They didn’t look the best but they were a good drive and weren’t “tinny” at all. And again this new small car will probably be a great car, just doesn’t seem like it will look the best…

  • Patra81

It looks like Mazda 2 from side of view…..boring boring

  • JamesB

Things aren’t looking too good in the design area of new Mitsus. The upcoming Outlander looks ugly and this one nondescript at best. Hope the new Lancer won’t go down the same path.

    • Louib

Couldn’t agree more man, the worst thing is that this is the better looking of the two, I own a MY07 Outlander XLS and was hoping to get the new one, not so sure now, hopefully it’s a good drive but

      • Jap Car

mitsu have lost it over the last 5 years..  mitsu engines are always a concern

        • Jap Car

with mazda 2 and the ford festiva – tough market

        • JooberFPVGT

mitsu engines used to be bulletproof, my sis’s old car the Mirage of 1998 with the 4G15 kept going and going even when she prolongs each and every service, Likewise those found in the brother Lancer and evo/gsr.

Not to mention mitsu engines made the Hyundai excel of that era a car you drive it to the ground and just keeps going.

Not sure about this day and age though…

  • euro boy

    Mitsubishi badly needs new
design team. ALL of their cars look old and boring. For many car purchase is an
emotional decision. Not a good start with this looks.

    • AAA

I 100% agree Euro Boy. I’d look past this and buy a Cruze or Mazda 3 even if they are more exxy. As Jap Car mentioned, the Ford Festiva and Mazda 2 provide a bit more ‘style’ if you will. Throw out the design team or get them to do something new.

  • Shak

To me it looks small enough to compete with the Micra, which also brings up the fact that it looks a lot like the micra to my eyes. I dont know about everyone else but i really think Mitsubishi are going to flop with this car in developed markets.

    • Psynthesizer

Not if they price it right.

  • Gibwater

these have nothing on the old Mirage from ten years ago. They still look good now. Did Mitsu hire a designer from Proton?

  • Ibkub

If its priced cheaply, it will sell

  • arthur

dear lord what have they done?!?!!
