Chevrolet Camaro SS V8 gallery
September 11, 2008 by George Skentzos
General Motors has released a new high-res gallery of its flagship Camaro SS V8 model.
With much of its development carried out here in Australia by Holden engineers, naturally then it is powered by an LS3 V8 engine which also features in the local HSV line-up.
The Camaro SS develops 315kW and 553Nm when mated with the 6-speed manual gearbox, which drops to 298kW and 535Nm with the 6-speed automatic.
The Camaro almost wasn’t meant to be, with the initial concept never intended for production.
When executives then gave it the green light, Australian boffins pieced together the modern interpretation of the classic American icon on underpinnings borrowed from Holden’s billion dollar baby.
Unfortunately, still no official word yet on whether the new Camaro will ever see Australian showrooms.

This car is doomed.
With US fuel economy standards being raised to well over 30mpg (US gallons) average it is only a matter of time before this car is dumped.
Already they have cancelled some other similar cars and trying to get rid of the Hummer.
Whether you believe in human induced climate change or not this car is extremely wasteful in this day and age.
do you honestly think people who would buy this car care about fuel economy??
u honestly belive there is no market for a modern day muscle car in the states. the mustang still manages to sell in huge numbers.
You didn’t get what I said….
GM will not be allowed to sell the car.
The last line was just my opinion.
This car will still sell, these cars are like toys, and as a toy they are bought to be enjoyed, not bought with your mind thinking about money.
However, i just don’t find this car very exciting at all, i think the new Dodge Challenger is so much cooler and more desirable, especially in orange. Or may be it’s just me. And who cares how they perform or how they handle, these cars are about the cool factor and their looks.
those rims are straight out of mazda’s rx8 parts bin
SamR:
WTF? GM won’t be ALLOWED to sell the car? Does it have a twin turbo V12? I think not. Does it get 10MPG? I think not. As long as AMG and M divisions can sell cars in America, GM can sell an American icon in America especially with a 6 speed manny, mated to an engine with enough torque to literally cruise from 60 – 110km/h in top gear while sipping at 91, which brings me to my next point, this car with its’ immense torque can be rather efficient, especially on a highway or as a long distance cruiser (as it is designed to be). Not every car is designed for the city, have you never driven outside of one before? City cars fail EVERYWHERE but the city. Corners, straights, highways, you name it. Prius sucks everywhere but traffic lights.
More to the point SamR, human induced climate change is called the ‘enhanced greenhouse effect’ and according to my geography professor is around a
*>10% increase to the natural Greenhouse Effect (natural i.e. not our fault) as we are coming off the back of a (geologically) recent ice age (10’s of 000’s of years ago). Who would have thought you would learn anything at Uni….
Yep 666. If one wants to help the climate……look at the greatest single massive contributer being human beings and me thinks without a doubt that the overall population needs to be reduced. The larger overall the population gets the worst it will become and what little effect is being done to reduce greenhouse gases now (Kyoyo, Energy efficiency, cars, etc) will be too small a dent to tackle it as the population increases always! Sounds bad to declare it……but population control will occur and if not now (in 15yrs or so one will see what man has tried to do to tackle this issue is ineffective and the next port of call will be population control). There is “NO OTHER ANSWER”
that is such a gorgeous car, I’d sacrifice something else greenhouse gas producing to be able to drive it. Perhaps no cabbage for the duration? It reminds me of the first (I think) camaro from either the late sixties or early seventies – the low slung one, generally black. Exactly what (IMO) a muscle car should look like. If it makes you feel any better, even though we should do what we can to help, it wont really matter what we do when China is building factory after factory and now cars are being used over there more, and on top of that we have people in the sub continent turning to the cheap cars rather than scooters etc…just the sheer numbers there dwarf anything positive we can do, though its gotta start somewhere.
you are spot on naughty one!al gore has said”there is no better contraception than the knowledge your children will survive”that message needs to go to india ,china etc
“GM will not be allowed to sell the car” is so far the dumbest thing I have read or heard today.
Who exactly is going to tell them that they are not allowed to sell the car? You SamR? Good luck with that!
In case you haven’t heard it WILL be onsale shortly.
And even if you and others won’t buy it, manay many other will.
It just looks awesome, good work on keeping the essence of the original.
i think SamR is refering to the CAFE regulations being brough in by the US government that stipulates a minimum MPG rating for car manufacturers. What SamR seems to be not understanding is that minimum is averaged accross the manufacturers ENTIRE range, not just individual cars. So its not that any car that does less then 30 MPG can’t be sold (or whatever the figure is) its that the average of a manufacturers ENTIRE FLEET has to not be less then 30 MPG.
With the chevy volt coming in, along with so many smaller cars in their lineup such as the cobalt, chev will have no problem meeting this target. So pull your head in SamR
also with cylinder deactivation and a few other niceties, GM is claiming economy that betters a 6 cylinder commodore and falcon in the big V8 model, and economy the betters the aurion (by a significant margin) in the V6 model
Lets hope that the Cylinder deactivation is going to acheive some good numbers than what it has done to the Accord V6. Claims are hard to be trusted until tested.
Beautiful retro look and power to boot, anyways. A car
Rather than, climate change issues I think its more on the consumption issue, I agree with the Devil that humans do little to climate change compared to the nature’s methane from the ocean and all that, and from the recent (not so recent major eruptions). In these days consumption of natural resources is a big thing, more people, less land, less oil, less water, and eventually less food. people need to be more efficient with what they have or plan to have. Governments are already enforcing things already.
In todays carsguide in the daily tele there were shots of RHD comaros at melbourne airport, looks like we might be getting it here.
Richo says “What SamR seems to be not understanding is that minimum is averaged across the manufacturers ENTIRE range”
I am, of course, aware of that.
The point is that for every gas guzzler GM sells they have to sell many many more super economy cars. And these economy cars are not as profitable.
It makes it tough for GM, Ford and Chrysler. The price of the gas guzzlers will have to go up substantially to subsidise the smaller cars or they will just stop making them.
Also the CAFE standards will only get tougher as time passes.
Oh, one more thing, don’t shoot the messenger, it’s not my policy.
SamR I totally agree with your first opinion.
However, becuase the majority of readers on this site get so defensive over anything that is terribly wasteful your argument is doomed :(
These people deserve to die of cancer sometime in the near future rather than 30-40 years down the track when it finally clicks that it’s not ok to exist & consume so carelessly.
Great car – sad its unlikely to be RHD esp after you Aussie worked your arses off on it.
Just my opinion – but cylinder deactivation, yeh great, but all really means is yer engines too big in the first place. Yeh I know I’ll get slated, but what the heck.
Naughtyius Maxiumus, dude ur just an ignorant, selfish, little Brat. So ur solution to Solving Global Warming is to Kill More ppl. LOL how dumb & selfish can u get. First of all dnt u think George Bush & Some of the Worlds Governments Have Killed Enought PPL in the middle east & around the World.
& yet still, u think that We should just drop a few Nuclear bombs at say INDIA, & Asia & wipe out about over 2 Billion People off this planet. Fuken FOOL. First of all How much greenhouse gases will u produce dropping those few Nuc’s. Tons & tons.
And Have u even considered, how much Green house gases are & have been produced By the Worlds Tanks, Army Trucks, F15-F18(etc) fighter gets, Navy ships, bombs, missiles etc. That have been involved in every War ever since the early 1900’s. & the continuing Wars.
Did u know that After the attacks of 9/11 on the WTC. all american airlines were grounded From September 11 – 14. & in those 3 days the American climate changed. The days were on average 3 Degrees Celsius Cooler & the nights were 2 degrees Warmer
( Like clouds, the ice crystals in contrails shield the Earth’s surface from the sun’s radiation during the day, and keep the heat in at night),
Now wow that might not seem like alot. But over a While it might Make a difference. And do u know about how the American & some other countries Climate is controlled By the Contrails & Chemtrails. (DO SOME RESEARCH)
Now u might wana know some facts & do Some research before typing some Dimwitted remarks, about reducing Earths population, Just so u Can live in peace, With ur ugly little Prius.
Now as for this Camaro, Brilliant looking car, U can tell it will do well in the America, Hopefully us Aussies can get some RHD ones over here, (hope those comments about RHD ones seen at Melbourne airport are Correct)
I share that opinion No Name. I’m not nearly convinced cylinder deactivation is of any use. Look at CA’s four car comparo (Falcon, Accord, Aurion, Commodore). The heavier, torquier Falcon had the best fuel economy, despite the Accord’s DOD tech.
Ford Falcon G6E: 9.8L/100km
Holden Commodore Calais V6: 10.9L/100km
Toyota Aurion Presara: 10.5L/100km
Honda Accord V6 Luxury: 10.6L/100km
If it’s possible to shutoff the deactivation, I’d like to see CA do a tank with two Accords in convoy, one switched on and one off. That would give a good indication of what difference it makes.
DI sounds like it’ll give much better results.
Watto,
i also join the club that feels DOD will just be a gimmock.
the accord proves it, and thats coming from honda who is no slouch on tech stuff.
Alborz…………Happy Birthday to you,ur a legend its true,u love driving fast cars and so do your crew!
Enjoy your day babe!
Andrew & Watto,
If DOD worked that well, Falcon could have had it years ago.
Oh, thats right, the Falcon 6 cyl has had cylinder deactivation since 1999, however it isn’t used for fuel economy but for limp home engine cooling when the radiator or a hose has dumped ALL of the coolant.
Bret, with the limp home mode, what actually gets shut off? Injectors and spark I’d think but do the valves stay open so the remaining 3 cylinders aren’t compressing air?
So long as they produce it as it was originally portrayed and use an MDS (MultiDisplacementSystem), who cares if they go back to a small V8, I would buy it to test the Uncertainty Principle!!
Just reading the latest ed of Unique cars………..the new Challenger right hand hook in Australia,$195,000 ,evil looking car but come on!!!!!!!!
The Supersnake, horsepower heaven with over 500kws but 300k………
What would we expect this to cost us ?
These cars are all ultra cool and fast but there are too many other choices in that price range thanks. Maybe wait and import a left hand hook one in a few years maybe the only way some of us can enjoy this retro muscle stuff !
The car looks absolutely stunning. I will be one of the first in line to purchase this beauty. This car will not be harmful for the environment with the Active Fuel Management technology that GM now offers. While Global Warming seems to be more the discussion on this page then the Camaro itself, I would like to credit GM for their fine work in creating a car that has style, class and of course horsepower that lives up to the Chevy Camaro heritage. While anticipating this car’s production for many years now, I am glad to see it finally hitting the market this year. And for all you guys who think that this car is second to the Chrysler wanna-be or the Ford Mustang, I can’t wait to see you at the light… Pink slips anyone?
