Victoria police Hummer style

Victoria Police have announced plans to use five custom built Hummer H3s in a new operation to tackle the weekend violence in Melbourne’s CBD.

Victoria Police Hummer H3

General Motors’ Hummer brand will be loaning the five vehicles to Victoria police with media reports suggesting the cars will be ready within five weeks.

The concept is for the Police force to stand out and have a stronger felt presence on city streets. The idea has already been in the works for some time, however the announcement follows yet another weekend filled with violence that left a 24-year-old man dead and another seriously injured.

2008 Hummer H3

“The idea of going to the Hummers is that it’s about trying to measure visible impact so we’ve got to try to introduce something which might look different to our current fleet of vehicles. We want to be visibly seen and we want to make sure the police out on the streets are recognisable and that we do reassure the public that we’re there.” Asst Commissioner Gary Jamieson said

Will the use of more “stand-out” vehicles such as the Hummer have any noticeable impact on the alcohol problem in Melbourne?

That excuse is just pathetically laughable….G-Unit style aye.

Its a shame for GM that they are only loaning out the Hummers because if they sold 5 to them it would probably double their monthly sales figures…….

  3. green Says:

yeah good on ya Crouchy gm sells around 90 hummers a month on average in australia, mark ups are high and for a niche vehicle its filling its market gap very Successfully. get your facts right

hummers h3s will definatly stand out to the public. hi vizability policing can only be a good thing.

why not, the hummer is just as capable as any other suv for carting around cops and equipment.

  4. Austin Says:

You don’t need to transport suspects anyway, they just roll right by in their hummer with their glock out the window popping caps in hommie’s arses…

  5. Bret Says:

Now here’s a GM publicity stunt, that will benefit everybody (unlike a cop-out fuel discount scheme).

High visibility policing is a good thing.

    Green,
actually last month they only sold 36 Hummers, but it is 880 for the year, which averages 110/month.

  6. Frenchie Says:

Maybe they can mount a machine gun on the top! That’ll give them more presence!

  7. Neil Says:

Yeah because us Melbournians have really been calling out for the cops to go patrolling the streets in H3’s - hwy not just substitute one of the patrol cars for a bright-coloured SV6 or XR6?

Of course what else can we expect from a government that continues to ignore our health & public transport issues
We have a more serious problems than a lack of publicity - how about more coppers for our growing population?

    (Report)

  8. Bret Says:

    Neil,
Why look a gift horse in the mouth - these are on FREE loan from GM. Why not?

  9. Chucky Says:

I have recently seen a group of 3 Hummer H3s driving around promoting some sort of drink (a chocolate milk I think) and they definitely stood out. So I think this is quite a good idea.

As for Hummer sales, while they have been slowing down the reason for only 36 sales last month is because of the increase in the luxury car tax. The second lowest number was in July at 79 sales when the LCT increase first came into effect.

Lol, ‘police kill 3 in high speed chase after attempting a pit manoeuvre in a hummer’.

  11. TuffGuy Says:

It would be a lot cheaper and easier to severely limit drinking hours at pubs and clubs. These wankers today just do not know how to handle themselves when they get on the grog. If they will not stop the violence and stupidity and destruction then turn off the grog early and send them all home so they can trash their own place.

    waste of time and money.
instead the should fix the court system that let crims slip easy with a pat

  13. Jimbo Says:

I wanted to hate this idea but it was Chucky’s comment that almost changed my mind. The police will be much more visible, and that can only be a good thing right……..?

Or will this just mean that thugs and scum bags will see them coming a mile off and it will make it easier for them not to get caught.

Hmmm… How about more Police on the streets! More jobs for upstanding citizens and as a result a safer city and community in general.

A gimmick that I see little value in…… Other than a couple of new recruits maybe.

WHAT A JOKE, I’m so scared AHHHHHHHHHHHHH !!!!!!!!!!!!, now police are driving hummers, what are they going to to do with them besides wasting many public tax paying fuel dollars, our average copper will grow such an ego trip chasing public off the road with big brick’s on wheels..

They should be driving battery operated Toyo Priass Golf carts, poor toyoda, the company just dosen’t receive enough recognition or media hype these days.

Nice approach to sustainability and practicality, I realise that these are not H2’s but still.

  16. Andrew M Says:

when it costs the government nothing, why not give it a go.

I’d reckon more plain clothed police officers would solve the street violence problems.
as already said, every one would stand up straight when they saw these coming.

they need something to really sort things out.

how about bring back the “guardian angels”???
that would sort the P*icks out

  17. Mat S Says:

y dont u have more visbale ploice car on the roads not just in the streets instead of them sneaky uncover cop cars

  18. Joober Says:

Thats right, A hummer has very strong prominance all you need is to couple it with some tough guys in it.
Take it as…. would you feel more intimidated to see cops pull out from this or a cops pull out from a Hyundai getz?

  19. AC COBRA Says:

Mr T from A team would fit the strong image they need, Victorian Police Hummer Department >>>>> V.P.H.D.

  20. No Name Says:

What next Robo Cop? What the cops really need a load more bobbies with a zero tolerance atitude to mindless behavour. Don’t really see a Hummer making much of an impact as say a blacked up Transit loaded with riot squaddies waiting for an excuse to get their truncheons out.

    Joke
Whats the difference between a magicians wand and a policemans truncheon.
One’s for cunning stunts and the other for apprehending criminals!!!

  24. The Salesman Says:

Wow this is a great idea. But why stop at Hummers? If you really want to be seen lets get police tanks. Might not help on the high speed chase so lets modify them with NOS. Suddenly i dont feel like going out for a drink anymore.

    (Report)

  25. Michael Knight Says:

What them fools need is some Mo F*cking Bling. That’ll make sure they’re seen.

    But seriously
Instead of loaning Hummers GM should loan out a couple of trans-ams painted black with a red light on the bonnet.

  28. Kezza Says:

Anything that helps to lift the police profile is a good idea. In the past Victoria police have used a 300C, HSV coupe and MX-5 for verious other promotions, all of which have had a positive effect and were supplied by the relevent manufacturers. This is only a soft approach, more cops on the beat would be the better option as well as restricting some liqour licenses, however I reckon it would be rather intinidating rolling around the CBD with these things prowling around everywhere. They’d better make them look tough!

As for the comments regarding high speed chases - I think you’ll find the Hummers would be excluded from taking part, in the same way other SUV’s and divisional vans are.

    (Report)

  29. Joober Says:

I agree that its better if there are more Police on patrol with a 0 tolerance attitude, better yet we need to clamp down on alcoholism which is driving violence up and up especially in the CBD, and when your pretty much wasted, a cop, bouncer or just some guy look no different.

  30. thomasr Says:

First up: The H3’s asthmatic 5 cyl engine uses less fuel than a SS commodore.

THAT said, I hope they don’t get in a chase as they would be better getting out and running.

I think it’s worth a shot especially as GM is stumping them up for free.

IF they really want to clean up, then drive past QBH on a Friday night really late on the footpath and half the problem will be all over the bumper.

  31. Joober Says:

That said, I just read on theage, a policewoman got kicked in the head, and the guys excuse was he was drink, I reckon stock up those Hummers with tear gas knock out those drunk yobs straight up!!.

I thought the cops were whingeing about lack of money, yet they buy this flashw*nk pieces of crap!! The Police Land cruisers and Patrols have much better off-road ability, but offcourse this fuel guzzler is aimed strictly at the streets!! Why not just stick to the Rodeos/Colorados this H3 shares it’s platform with!!
