Toyota FT-86 standard production model leaked

By Tim Beissmann |

More images of the Toyota FT-86 have leaked onto the web – this time potentially showing us the car in its standard production form.

Today’s first two images, first published by FT86club, appear to show the new Toyota sports coupe in original, non-customised form. The third shows two optional aerodynamics packages: Type-A on the left and Type-B on the right.

The magazine pages follow similar leaked brochure images published late last week that allegedly showed a white Toyota FT-86 with a Modellista body kit and styling enhancements.

The new scans of the red sports car reveal simple, unadulterated bumper and skirt lines, giving the car a clean design, yet one still filled with drama and character.

The LED headlight inserts have made way for a more conventional headlamp assembly. The thin-spoke alloy wheels are more elegant and a simple black antenna replaces the Modellista’s body coloured ‘shark fin’. The rear end retains the clear-lens taillights and aggressive diffuser of earlier leaks and sketches.

The production version of the Toyota FT-86 – potentially to be called simply ‘86’ when it hits the market – will be revealed alongside its sister car, the Subaru BRZ, at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show on November 30.

Toyota Australia has confirmed the new sports car will be sold locally, with the two-door four-seater scheduled to land in showrooms around the middle of 2012.

The production model will be powered by a front-mounted 2.0-litre Boxer engine developed in collaboration with Subaru. Six-speed manual and automatic transmissions will send power to the rear wheels, promising proper sports car ride and handling characteristics.

Expect more details over the coming four weeks in the lead-up to the Tokyo Motor Show.

In the meantime, do you think this is the production version of the Toyota FT-86? And if so, do you think it looks better than the images with aero kits? Let us know in the comments section below.

I am hoping it will be priced less than $40k and we’ll have a winner. Looks like this would be strong bang for your bucks car and a very good contender to win this segment.

  • Hung Low

By the time this will be available, it will be over hyped and under delivered!
Great to see a change from Toyota though, all we need is the next Silvia to compete Mr Nissan!

  • du-ma

why are they using a boxer engine?
then whats the difference between the subaru and toyota version? different bumpers lol?

  • http://caradvice OSU811

As long as priced around $40k will be a great proper rwd sports coupe! that is not over priced.

  • Frostie

This actually looks… satisfying. Just waiting to hear about engine specs and not to mention – finalised cost.

This has the looks.. Now let’s just hope it has a different engine then the corolla and it be priced less then 40k

  • AJ

    Decisions decisions.

    FT86

    BRZ

    Genesis Coupe.

    All coming soon to Australia.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1715760895 Charles Dean

Dude the Genesis will not be priced as cheap as these.. Expect over 50k for the Genesis

    • camaro

hey mates, my advice is not to buy genesis. My brother living oversea has one and he said it’s not a good sport car at all.

    • Josh

Subaru Australia arent sure if they will sell the BRZ at all in Australia…given its RWD and the new XV is coming out, there may not be enough interest for them. Time will tell of course

  • DeJaVu

    Leak…. leak….. leak.

The only thing that’s leaking is the reality of me purchasing this. I’ve held on for 2 years to have this brilliant machine. Mid 2012?? I’m starting to wonder if it will ever come out.

  • vti07

I thought it was only available in manual form? Anyway, having both auto and manual will make it appeal to as many people as possible. Under $35k sell price would be nice but unlikely.

  • MatthewM

I really hope they either come out with a factory-turbo’ed model, or there is great, great aftermarket support once it comes out.

Sure, a great handling RWD car is good in its own right (ala MX-5), but some of us enjoy a bit more kick!

    • Sonic

I remember an interview (about a year ago) with one of the creators behind the FT-86. He mentioned that the car was aimed at real enthusiasts, and it will give buyers a lot of freedom to modify the engine and body. So I’d expect aftermarket support to be very good.

From German Car mag ‘AutoBild’ -

    Specs for the Subaru BRZ:

    Power: 157kW @ 7,000RPM
    Torque: 213Nm @ 4,000RPM
    Kerb Weight: 1270kg
    0-100km/hr: 6.0 Seconds
    Vmax: 225km/hr

    • Hung Low

Looking at that torque figure, it means a n/a engine of around 2000cc capacity! Peak figure torque at 4000rpm is quite low in the range considering peak power is produced at 7000rpm! One would expect that torque figure to be heading south by the time peak power is reached, if not then is an impressive engine!

    • UniversityOfGoogle

specs are meh, WRX is still better performance wise, and if it’s in the same price category this had better have more magic to be worthwhile.

    • incentive75

Hmmmm, this 86/BRZ “smells” just like RX-8 GT/R3:

RX-8 GT (R3 in the rest of the world) has:
      170kW @ 8500RPM
      211Nm @ 5500RPM
      1370kg
      0-100km/hr: 6.4 Seconds
      Vmax: 235km/hr

Less weight and max torque in slightly lower RPM is reflected in better 0-100 time – feel will be very similar as driving the RX-8.
Conclusion – it will drive alright, will handle razor-sharp – - -> and will not set your pants on fire.

    • aza

      From ft86club:
      HP: 147kw (200ps) / 200hp @7000rpm
      Torque: 205nm (151 lb/ft) @ 6600rpm
Weight: 1210 (base manual), 1230 (base auto/top spec manual), 1250Kg (top spec auto), 6 speed manual and auto
      Fuel consumption: 7.7 l/100km and 8.0 l/100km PULP 50L tank
LSD on all MT cars and top spec auto

      • incentive75

I’m not surprised Subaru Australia is not keen on it – power and torque specs tell a huge story.

  • Pauly

Heres hoping the refreshed Hyundai Genesis Coupe keeps the price of the BRZ and FT-86 within reasonable levels…

    • Hung Low

More like the other way around!

    • Zoru

Actually it’s the opposite, it’s more like the Ft-86 & BRZ will be keeping the price of the genesis coupe reasonable..

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1435885244 Yani Hendriawan

the front bumper could look better and the lights are too rounded, i liked it when they were more pointier

  • Diesel Power

BRZ looks much better than this…

  • iNoob

Would be courteous of you to mention that you’ve copied those translated pics off the FT-86 forum where a forum member Ichi translated..

    • Sonic

They did. First sentence, second paragraph.

  • Vins

The Jap really lacks creativity in design department. Why sport cars must have a Porsche silhoutte? The 350Z, 370Z, now this. Look at Lotus mates

    • Alan

This is a European Design car actually

  • GIG

WOW!finally… BAD news for HONDA NISSAN and MAZDA

  • j

Rumoured Japanese pricing puts it at 25% less than the Subaru SGT aka WRX. Therefore I hope its around $30k. At $39k, it competes with the turbo hot hatches- cars with more practicality, more power and more torque. Unfortunately logic rules over emotions in that transaction.

That said, I do like the look of it!

  • Pauly

30K for the FT-86? Your kidding right?

Just calm down and stop and think for a moment.

Toyota Australia have to fit this car in above the top spec Corolla. The top spec corolla is just above 30K.

I can promise you there is NO WAY they will undercut the price of the corolla.

It is a flagship model, that is why you will pay flagship prices.

    Expect 38K+ BEFORE ONROAD COSTS.

    • j

In that case, I’ll just go and get a turbocharged, awd, 5 door hatchback. Same price, more performance, more practicality.

      Pricing fail.

  • anthony tupper

Like to make a drift car out of one of this pretty good

  • Dragan

I just want to hear this thing at high RPM……Yamaha developed cylinder heads and other components!!!

I still think tuned NA engines sound better then turbo…..you can only take so much of the pshhhhhhttttt and pigeon flutter of the turbo/bov combo!

    At high RPM youtube these:

    S20 in-line six
    k20 four

  • brrrrrrrrooooommm

Its funny that all these asian RWD models are heading to australia, yet ford australia’s knees are trembling and disappointing australians by introducing cheap and nasty american east-west taurus’s.

    whats the go?

  • E85 lover

    sweeeeett….

Now Nissan, give us a new 200sx allready!!!!

  • Fred

Except for RWD and the badge, the FT86 seems more Subaru than Toyota. It would be more interesting though if the BRZ were 4WD so we could find out which of the two drivetrains handles better.

    • Lukaas

Thats because the chassis, engine base block some underbody components are from current/previous Subaru Imprezas that have been re-engineered by them for the FT-86.

Toyota did pay for all the R&D, styling and body work however.

But still, Toyota would of had their input on its performance and capability…. because they have more experience with RWD sports coupes in the past.

  • Lukaas

This car will hopefully bring back…
    - Honda Integra
    - Nissan Silvia

The Under 50K (AUD) coupe segment…

    RWD LSD 147kW 205nM torque… 1250kg!!
Its not a drag racing car… in its stock form anyways…. but man, I would take it down to the Great Ocean Road immediately from the Dealership if I was to buy it.

    - Gonna be fun to throw it around bends and curves with ease, just like its predecessor.

    in FT86Club, they mentioned around 40K AUD….

    hopefully!!!
