2012 Suzuki Swift Sport unveiled before 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show

By Brett Davis |

Suzuki has pulled the wraps off the new 2012 Suzuki Swift Sport which will be officially unveiled at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show next month. The new Swift Sport showcases a slightly more aggressive front end design and a more powerful engine compared with the outgoing model.

There are elements of Audi R8 in the lower nose of the new 2012 Suzuki Swift Sport, particularly in the spotlight cluster design and venting. To some, the new front end may seem familiar and that’s because it’s almost identical to the one seen on the Suzuki Swift S-Concept car that was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year.

The headlights also show off the new pouncing design, spreading further back into the bonnet, much like the S-Concept’s layout. This production version has lost some of the extra tinsel of the Concept though, such as the large, more dramatic roof-mounted rear wing and the chunkier bodykit with silver vents and highlights.

Suzuki says the revisions to the new model are more than mere cosmetics though. The company says the new Swift Sport will offer “superior cornering stability and brisker, more responsive handling” compared with the outgoing model thanks to the addition of rebound springs placed in the struts, and a redesigned rear suspension layout.

Power for the 2012 Swift has also been bumped up from the current 92kW on offer with the help of a new M16A 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine. The new unit produces 100kW of power and 160Nm of torque, all connected up to a slick new six-speed manual transmission.

The new Suzuki Swift Sport is scheduled to go on sale in Australia early in 2012.

Sounds good, apart from the fact it is heavier than the previous model, with not a big enough jump in power to make a difference!

  • Cliffo

    4WD turbo would be nice

    • ze scheister

wonder if the pikes peak escudo running gear will shoe-horn in there

  • Phil

100KW isn’t much. The basic Hyundai accent now has 91KW, Fiesta has 88KW and the new Kia Rio 1.6 will have 103KW.

With the 132KW/250NM Polo GTI from $27,790 and the twin-under-the-skin Skoda Fabia RS coming priced below that, 100KW\160NM Swift looks extremely weak – and if its priced at $24,490 like the old model was, no one will buy it.

Have you driven the previous swift sport phil ?
sometimes the nubers don’t tell the whole story.

Anyone who has driven one will tell you they are a fun drive for the price. With a lot more space than the 3 door polo GTI, plus the added bonus of not driving sisy car

      • Brodie

        Swift = sissy car.
New Sport looks good, shame they haven’t given it a bit of performance to match the looks.

      • ze scheister

agree, and the previous sport had forged pistons, high lift cams, strengthened valves/springs and port and polished manifolds. a motorcycle manufacturer building bullet proof small engines, who would have thought

        • Damian

Which basically amounted to nothing considering its p!ss weak performance. And to add insult to injury, the old one mandated 95 RON… Suzuki will need to price the Swift Sport at around $24k for there to be any interest.

My lady has the previous sport which was bought to replace the totalled pug 206 gti in april .

Iam with you toxic definately a good drive , B road wizards both , its not all about power , low weight and a well developed handling leaves others behind .

    • martin

If this handles as well as the previous gen i’d happily sacrifice the power, I’d rather a car that handles extremely well over one with lots of power and average handling.

  • F1MotoGP

Not bad but I like the Fabia RS with 132kW and 250Nm from 2000 rpm!!!

  • Reckless1

Much as I like the Swift range, this car is not good value.

It’s probably not surprising that Suzuki has borrowed the VW/Audi nose styling (VW owns 10% of Suzuki, remember) but it would be nice if they borrowed some VW/Audi turbo technology.

Pricing is too close to Polo/Fabia for a lesser product. The driveability, etc, is not the same, even if it is pretty nice.

  • Gti

The swift sport has not kept up with the modern power requirements of this age.

I own an standard 87 Swift Gti and performace wise it kills the sport. 74kw ,1.3l and only 750 kg. Sure its old and not as comfy but cmon suzuki, this is the 21st century, make it better than something 25 years old in every aspect.

  • marcelito

    Looks nice enough to me..
