2008 Mercedes C-Class Estate and S320 CDI

May 20, 2008 by Karl Peskett

Mercedes Australia has been busy today, with the introduction of not only its C-Class Estate, but also the S-Class 320 CDI.

The C-Class estate carries the same specifications as its sedan siblings, meaning Classic, Elegance, and Avant Garde options are available. Initially being launched as a C200K model, the Estate range will be rounded out by the addition of the C220 CDI, and the C63 AMG later in the year.

Pricing is set at $58,890 for the C200K, with the C220 CDI amd C63 Estates carrying a tag of $63,100 and $141,300 respectively. Loading space is rated at between 485L and 1500L depending on seating configuration.

Also today the S-Class gains a new model to the local line-up with the introduction of the S320 CDI. This is the first time that the S-Class has been made available with turbo-diesel power in Australia – a move which cashes in on Aussies turning towards more fuel efficient vehicles.

Making 173kW and between 500-540Nm, the 3-litre V6 is among the more powerful passenger cars with this size engine.

The S320 CDI comes into showrooms priced at $190,900.

Had a look at a estate the other day. Cool little popout hooks in the load area. The combo pullout load cover/retaining net is a cool bit of engineering. The squared off rear door tops give you a bit more room to get in than a sedan. The back doors seem very LONG in real life.

Nice little wagon indeed. Get a 220CDI and get some great economy. I wish people would buy these instead of tanklike 4WD’s…

mmmmmmmmm,C63 Estates carrying a tag of $63,100 and $141,300 respectively.another reason I think the XC70 is better value in many ways. Both good looking wagons though!

      BM,

My (special order) XC70 has arrived (after 4 months) so I will soon be able to confirm if they are as good as they look !

I was seriously considering a C220CDI Estate but needed the ground clearance and AWD ability…

O, I think the door pulls are the recessed area behind the arm-rests, just visible in the photos.

      Thank you boggy……

Volvo are under rated when it comes their cars still.Their wagons I am especially fond of,Im betting the interior finish is better in the XC70 Stig…..Im looking at one towards the end of the year as the new everyday driver, had a V70 2.5T before but want AWD cause FWD annoys me! Still a bargain for what they are and what you get Stig Im sure you will agree . The SIPS is an added bonus along with the children’s booster seat in the rear …..great ideas! Would love to know what you think of it after a few months driving it Stig! What colour?

Just a white LE (sunroof/electric tailgate/18’s etc) D5 with black trim. Got a bit carried away with a few “essential” options like vented seats, PCC/Keyless entry, laminated glass, factory bluetooth, Dynaudio stereo. Oh well, it is only money and one has to be comfortable…

I know we have gone a bit OT but the (optional) HK in the Benz sounds pretty good too. There is a subwoofer in the cargo bay of the C Class estate nicely intergrated…

Back to the Volvo… I had a good listen to the “standard” XC70 with a CD of mine that taxes stereos and was impressed. I wasn’t expecting the Dynaudio to be THAT much better but it was… $930 well spent. I upgraded the stereo in a new BMW I ordered once ($1500+) and while the specs looked good on paper, it raised the sound from a 3 to a 5 out of 10. IMHO the Std Volvo stereo is a 7 and the Dynaudio a 9 – and a 10 if you add the extra subwoofers ($1300)…

Yep no idea on the make of the stereo Volvo use but its brilliant!

Alpine in my BM not bad ,better than Fords and Holdens system.
