Brilliant new Pontiac G8 TV Ad

May 17, 2008 by George Skentzos

Pontiac’s latest “Mine” television ad for the G8 sedan makes Ford’s FG commercials look rather mundane in comparison.

This is what Australian car ads should look like.

We couldn’t be seen condoning hooning here in Australia so that add would not make it

  2. name (required) says:

i thought that aus wasnt aloud to make adds like that after the must be stuck in 3rd add for the au xr8 ute all speed adds got banned in aus didnt they??

  3. Minnow says:

Yeah it contains, loops, wheel spins, drifting, wheelies on two wheels, and 360’s. Man this would attract the attention of the PM and there would be a massive backlash by pressure groups of grannies saying P-Platers will copy such behavior in their VL commodore and then kill themselves then the hippies would come in and say its causing global warming promoting such driving styles, then the PM will go YES ban this ad. So much drama here in Australia, its pathetic. Instead here ford spends more advertising time on some gigantic freaks hand splashing in water and running on the beach than the car itself to sell what is a powerful, family performance car. The hippies and old people of this country are going to destroy local manufacturing if this keeps going on.

  4. o says:

didnt som UK guy get our good ads banned its ridiculous will subway adds be banned because theey condone eating i mena that holden ad where they drove around the toys noone will buyt it and go hmmm now to run over som children.but anyway personally i really like the mazda 6 ads

  5. Ford G Series says:

I agree, they would not air such hoon driving, but holdenwoo replace such actions with Holdens “go better” slogan, But thats a joke as well, cause they go worse in most cases..

  6. BOSSCR says:

Unfortunately Minnow, a P-plater in a VL has just killed himself and a mate on Lygon St in Carlton after hitting a parked car at 110km/h……. I agree though, I dont think ads contribute anything to a d1ckhead being a d1ckhead.

That aside, the ad is good. Id love to see Ford do something similar, but it isnt going to happen. Ford arent far from the good old Magna ad “Please consider”. What kind of soft c0ck marketing was that?

I say, bring on the burnouts, drifting and speeding!

  7. name (required) says:

oi ford G series they should do the add with the xr6t destroying the whole holden range now that would be a good add lol

  8. Wheelnut says:

For some unknown reason Car ads in Australia aren’t allowed to show a car being driven at excessive speeds on the roads – but its okay to show them to being driven around on the roof of a 40 storey building.. which I take it is the cars more “natural” environment

  9. Andrew M says:

    O,
your suggestion of banning bad food ads isnt far off. there has actually been pressure to ban junk food ads targeted at kids.

ford doesnt want this image so no way would they consider this sort of marketing.
i can see what sort of image they are trying put out there, its unfortunate they cant get the message over in a more catchy way.
you dont need rock songs and burnouts to sell a car, but you do need to be catchy and clever.
take a look at Hondas “everything works” AD.
it makes you watch it till the end because it is clever and at the same time putting across a message that their cars are just as clever

fords XR8 ute ads have always been good though.
they have always been clever and blokey
not “hoony” and blokey like holdens

i think ford needs to employ someone who has worked on writing beer ads for a few years. they always hit the mark and capture an audience greater than those that only drink beer.
ford need an ad that captures those that dont only drive large cars

  10. Watto_Cobra says:

There was a cool Mustang ad in the states. Showed the cops chasing a Mustang through the streets, around a few corners, skidding/sliding to a stop.

Then a cop jumps out of the Mustang with a huge grin/thumbs up to the poor owner who is handcuffed in the back of the Crown Vic.

His partner driving the Crown Vic then says “my turn.”

We’ll never see ads like that again :-(

  11. o says:

i find the mazda 6 ads hit the mark
and i love pretty much all mazda ads

and no i dont think a rooftop is a captivas natural enviroment espicailly when the man then freefalls down our youths mighgt behave like that
    gasp

  12. Wheelnut says:

I agree AndrewM The best beer ad would have to be the Carlton Draught “its a big ad…very big ad” ad

However another good beer ad was a Guiness ad.. the ad went for about 20-30 seconds – all it showed was a can of Guiness with a glass of Guiness next to it.. then at the end the voice over said makes you want one doesn’t it

  13. Andrew M says:

    Wheelnut,
    thats it mate.

even those that hate beer and wouldnt even dream of taking a drop get captured by the adverts beer manufacturers make.

thats what ford needs to do.

they need to capture the attention of those that wouldnt even dream of buying a large vehicle, let alone an aussie made version.
they have aligned the models perfectly in an attempt to turn around the fleet/taxi image, and with it quality, fuel economy and technology has greatly improved.

they now have a line up that leaves no real reasons for the previous stereotypes to exist, now all they need to do is get clever with advertising in a way that gets bums in seats for test drives

  14. o says:

i like the current ads but there no exceptional my idea would be to use the same music and the fingers but instead have the fingers belong to a veiwer a tsay bathurst.then the music stops and a g6E and Xr8 just zoom past that would be cool.but withj the no speed aloowed oon ads doesnt bathurst and racing on tv just un justify it plus 10 have ads for bathurst which show cars moving

  15. Reckless1 says:

Ford ads are mostly rubbish compared to Holden ads.

Their ad agency sucks, as do their advertising managers.

  16. Ford has to lift the bar with advertising….shame Ford shame as very average and could get better story to ads from 10yr olds.

  17. Wheelnut says:

Why not try something similar to the Citroen ads where the car transforms into either a dancing or an ice skating robot.. they were clever ads got peoples attention and helped increase sales virtually across the citroen range

  18. Why not do similar spiel just as Holden did with AC/DC and then car coming out of a cyclone and land on ground. Ford Falcon is about some 50yrs history downunder. What does Ford do to display history and passion…..STUFF ALL NOTHING EXCEPT SOME CUPPACINO SILLY FINGERS TIPTOEING ACROSS LANDSCAPE AS IF A FAIRY DREAM. Doesnt instil passion or heritage of 50yrs of Falcon downunder!

  19. Ford has also has to do better deals to compete with Holden and others. The Commodore represents unreal value at $33,990 driveawy with 6 airbags, 18″ alloy wheels, leather seat inserts, rear parking sensors and bluetooth compatible for devices.

    That is great value!

    Ford is dearer!

  20. Makes it hard to sell when management has crap commercials and not prepared to appeal massive to marketplace. Might be an unreal car……with a unreal “high” price!

  21. Andrew M says:

    NM,
have you forgotten the falcon SR for 32,888 with all the whistles including sat nav?

the deals are there, but the point of poor marketing has just been proven as lack of awareness is evident

  22. Andrew M says:

or 36K drive out for the territory with extra whistles including rear TV screens isnt bad either

  23. Watto_Cobra says:

Didn’t know that one Andrew.M. Satnav adds $2000 normally. (WHY????) So BF SR is under 33K. Damn good deal. Geez, if I wasn’t so fixated on an FG Turbo I’d definitely snap that up.

  24. Andrew M says:

    Watto,
the true bargins are going to be with those who find them selves some low K BF XR6T’s with the ZF box and the intention to tickle

did you see someone on here says they were quoted 48K drive away for a FG XR6T ZF6sp and premium stereo?
thats not a bad deal for a newly released vehicle if you ask me

  25. Reckless1 says:

Mind you, the poor advertising from Ford does help the company a lot – when they have a good car to sell (eg Mondeo Diesel) they wildly underestimate the market, and don’t have any stock.

Imagine if they had a real good ad, people would flock in only to be told – sorry not available for many months because we are dopes.

  26. Watto_Cobra says:

    XR6T $45,490 +
    ZF 6-speed $1,500 +
    Premium Audio $1,100 =
    $48,090
    Very good deal.

If I was getting the XR6T tho it would include:-
    ZF 6-speed $1,500 +
premium paint (breeze or nitro) $400 +
auxillary transmission oil cooler $200 +
matching alloy spare wheel $250 +
Tech pack (Bluetooth and true iPod) $450 +
    premium audio $1,100 +
    1600kg towbar $495 +
    spats (front & rear) $46 =
    $48,785

Sounds like a good deal to me.

  27. Anthony says:

Australia is a Mecca for the loud do-gooder minority. That’s the reason why you need to permission to build a garage on your own property and heaven forbid if you travel 3km/h over the speed limit. You will be considered a dangerous criminal.

This country is big brother gone mad and it gets worse as each year passes.

That Pontiac ad is great, and a welcome change to the Australian ads that would put you to sleep no matter how many Redbull’s you might have downed.

Wake up Australia and ignore the minority groups for a change.

  28. Jimbo says:

This is unrelated to the add. But I was just wondering how mant Americans that buy this car will know it is Australian. I just hope the good people at Holden get the credit that they are due.

  29. Golfschwein says:

Saw a Mondeo taxi yesterday. Diesel, undoubtedly.

  30. Andrew M says:

    Watto,
dont forget that quoted 38K was drive away!!!!!!!

that includes dealer delivery, Rego, CTP, stamp duty
that can total a few grand itself

  31. Watto_Cobra says:

    Damn good deal Andrew.M.

If the FG wasn’t so good in so many ways, I would go a runout BFII.

  32. Andrew M Says: May 18th, 2008 at 5:39 pm NM,
have you forgotten the falcon SR for 32,888 with all the whistles including sat nav? the deals are there, but the point of poor marketing has just been proven as lack of awareness is evident

NM response….Falcon is in run out mode to make way for ne Falcon. Holden have long had deals always on Commodore and Ford have not overly. Bad marketting in a burdgeoning industry with many keen sharp priced players. Ford sit sedately and iffy PR in print media and poor weirdo commercials on TV. Falcon is some 50yrs on Aussie market and people not overly keen of BS of latte commercial of fingers tip toeing thru countryside! May as well do Jack and Bean Stalk next………….LOL

  33. Wheelnut says:

Jimbo I suggest you log on to Aitoblog.com and lookup the various articles on Holden and the G8. There you will see that quite a number of Septics do know that the car is a Holden and Built in Oz.

And a report on the news tonite one pontiac dealersaid that the time it takes him to sell a G8 is 6 days and there are others that are selling them the same day – virtually off the back of a truck… that’s how big the demand is over there.. [in the first month of sales they have sold 4000 cars]

Demand is expected to increase even more when the G8 Sports Truck is released at the end of the year

  34. Andrew M says:

    Watto,
i was waiting for the same reason too.

I wanted to see what different the FG offered. if it wasnt that different i would have gotten a great deal on a run out BF11. but instead i feel the FG offers so much more.

cant wait to see the utes in the flesh.
i have already picked up on a few substantial changes to the utes, no thanks to the poor coverage of the ute release though

  35. Tomas79 says:

So much for the G8 being loved and snapped up by people in the US, as the Aussie media would like you to believe.
It’s main sales pitch there is it’s price.
And considering its a HSV spec dunnydore, for under 31,411.50 AUD. Anyone who buys one here, is a world class sucker!!
