• NotTheStig

Exterior with the exception of the front looks OK and a evolution of the original. The front however looks awful IMHO…

Interior a good step forward. Before anyone gets behind the wheel you know it will be a nice drive though…

    • Labrys

      I have to agree.
The back doesn’t look as bad as the old model’s did. Although maybe I have just become used to it.
But the front just doesn’t work at all.

Interior looks nice though and I suppoese that’s where you will be spending your time if you own one.

    • Jester

BMW has completely lost it – this new corporate look is just wrong, bland and boring. I’m actually surprised that they managed to make 1 series uglier then before, what an achievement, but then again people buying these cars only look at the badge so can’t really see sales suffering.

  • NotTheStig

More analysis has made me conclude that the headlights are placed strangely and, as anyone would say, are a funny shape…

  • Shak

I really have to admit, the new BMW corporate face does not work well here. And neither do the VW Polo tailights. They havent even changed the profile of the car.

  • jon_leong

Nice interior, slightly boring… but nice never the less.

… but whats with that HUGE nose job???

  • Kim.

The front looks good although it could do with bigger grills.

The rear looks okay but too similar to a polo!

Overall, a HUGE step up from the current 1 in the aesthetics department.

  • Ox

Oh dear, front lights way to big

  • Cash

What has been seen cannot be unseen! Hideous front end, it’s like an X1 shrunk in the sun

    • Dave S

X1 meets mini 5GT. Odd looks.

Do they need to bring bangle back?

  • PeterG

It seems there a lot of people disappointed because it is an obvious improvement.
It would be nice to drive a brand that made other people jealous.

    • Vibe

It would be nice to kick you in the face, however I shall refrain and let you drive your 120d with 19″ Alloys back to the Coffee Club.

      • http://www.nsmg.com.au Wil-son

Vibe, How is your anger management course going?? I never seem to understand the abuse people cop just for having their say or opinion. P.S. Vibe, there is no 120d at this stage. And btw, what do you drive to the Fight Club???

  • Skybreak

Seeing as BMW have just recently registered “M2″ as a trademark I wonder if we’ll see these cars badged as the “2 series”. Given that they are bigger than the current 1 series it kind of makes sense.

Or, given that the 6 Series are coupe bodies on (modified) 5 Series platforms maybe the hatch will stay as 1 Series and the coupe will be 2 Series.

  • pinkie ponk

135i convertible is AUS$ 40,873 in the US.
here, $76K before LCT, and stamp duty
we have been fooled in to thinking these cars are worth this much, and the importers are not passing on the decreased cost from our rising Aus dollar. But we keep buying them

    • Tom

Everything is cheaper in the US. A Ralph Lauren shirt that will cost you $160 here is $50 there. You can subscribe to most magazines for $15/year. Netflix gives you unlimited movies online for $8/month. Over Christmas, there was outrage that the average price of ‘gas’ had gone over $3/gallon (3.8 litres), with people saying it would ruin their holidays – it is now up to $3.80/gallon, I’m not sure how the country hasn’t collapsed.

      • John

        Economics of scale

        • pinkie ponk

wrong John. That’s just one of the excuses the importers put out. They even admit they charge what the market will pay. And we are willing to pay a lot more than most, so they charge it. Well, everyone else is overcharging as well.

        • The Realist

Sorry bud, weak arguement – the same items are also cheaper in places like Singapore and Malaysia.

  • HJP

Exterior: That hideous headlights…is the descendant of Bangle coming up with this design? The backlights are almost strikingly from current VW Polo
Interior: Looks nice and clean. Vast improvement over the predecessor

  • ryan bane

Well, lets be kind and say it wont be mistaken for anything else on the road…(except perhaps from the rear where is does look a lot like a polo).

Hopefully they have liberated more room in the rear and boot, the current model is basically a 2+2.

  • Tommy

Its completely and utterly FUGLY, how are people even saying it looks ok let alone good? What has the world come to..

  • Alexander

VW called, they want the rear end off their Polo back…

  • Golfschwein

It’s much nicer, and if it’s roomier in the back, it will win over some of those who favoured a fwd competitor over the old model.

  • http://www.iamfashionshop.com เสื้อผ้าแฟชั่น

WOW, can’t afford to buy it

  • PS

less mazda 3, more vw polo…

  • BigRob

Nah, the proportions are almost purely Alfa 147… But the detail is all wrong. So very wrong.

  • http://www.clearimagephotos.com braydenc

Revealed online because they could not afford enough buckets for the vomit there hideous

  • MattLaB

I think the main problem is that they haven’t tried hard enough to integrate the grille into the design (with the navy model, at least). It simply looks like they’ve just slapped on a pair of stickers a la a bad faux-BMW mod.

  • mrxandthexfactor

If BMW could design something as pretty as the 7-Series, why have they given us this piece of *THING*. The front looks like a monster. The interior is nice but bland.

  • Maple leaf

Ugly ugly ugly, and people thought a Lexus ct 200h was ugly. This is terrible.

  • Pauly

Why the hell have they tried to cram a 7 series face onto a much smaller car? The front just doesn’t work for me. Maybe we need to see it in the flesh…

    VW Polo Taillights though.

Such an overpriced car when compared to other German offerings.

  • SZQ

    damn this thing is fugly

The headlights have been installed upside down! Flip em up the other way and they work quite well!

    • Martin

      That’s exactly what I thought!

  • M

Have owned a 1series – good small car – the revised interior looks great – BUT – the new exterior front is a step backwards – those lights are so oversized – hope this is not a warning of what the new 3series nose will look like…

    • bangel

Very hard to judge until seen in the flesh , iam a fan of the big aggressive BMW front , but how it works on the smaller models , well lets wait till one is seen on the move.

      • Roadtard

bangel, get real. If Holden styled a car like this you’d laugh your backside off.

  • JooberFPVGT

That second last pic in the gallery reminds me of the green pigs on angry birds…

  • gms

I have a 1er and I bought it not because of it’s badge or how it looks, it’s how it drives. They’re a sports car made practical as opposed to competitors who make a practical car sporty. Take one on a drive through the hills and you’ll be hooked!

    • NotTheStig

I had one as a loaner for a day and confirm it was indeed a lovely handling little thing. Pedal weight, steering etc all great. Pity most buy for the badge and have no appreciation of what they have…

  • NSX

nice car but is it just me or does the rear lights look similar to the VW Polo

  • bangle

    hi chris,

    how’s samsung?

    i love you bangle!

  • Homer

Virtually every comment so far has been about how the car looks, as do most comments to this blog. If you only buy cars based on how they look then I guess you get what you deserve. There are probably another 10 good reasons to buy a car but all the shallow minded people here purely are interested in what other people will think of them. Guess you all have pretty Barbie doll wives with big boobs and empty heads. Looks great hanging off your arm but then you have to live with them. Reality check boys!

    • Matt

      So you’d buy a Ssangyong?

      • Homer

Not in a million years! They fail on all my 10 good reasons to buy a car but the BMW probably fits most. Exceptions might be the totally subjective areas of looks and value for money.

    • pinkie ponk

So, one’s taste in women is reflected in one’s taste in cars. Interesting.

    • Golfschwein

In fairness, Homer, looks is all we have at the moment. The car’s not yet released and nobody outside of BMW has driven it. Yes, it will be a great drive but, until it’s released, let everyone comment on its looks to their hearts’ content.

  • Skeeter

I see BMW has FINALLY made the move from fender signal repeaters to mirror mounted ones.

  • Italy calling…

Decent car, but I’d pick a Alfa Giulietta over it any day

  • Spooty

    Current 1-series hatch owner.

Do like the knuckles in the bonnet. Gives it a muscular look.

Don’t like the headlights, or the Hitler moustache grille.

  • Vibe

A slightly upmarket Polo is what this should be called. Eugh.

    • flash

I think that would be the Audi A1, you know with front wheel drive.

    • PeterG

and a slighlty down market moron is what you should be called

  • Valet Dabess

haters… i think it looks better then the old hatch back. i hope the sedan is going to look good

  • matt

I dont find headlights themselves ugly, but the plain space between the grill and where the bottom of the lights kick up is just freakin weird looking… I have no idea why but i absolutely love the taillights

  • http://caradvice OSU811

Hmmmmmm. Not bad definately more modern looking-)
Doesnt look like an I30 anymore!
But will still be overpriced in OZ!!

    • pinkie ponk

Yes, but it’s a BMW sir! It’s a lifestyle choice.

  • Vins

Tell me the front is just another practical joke. For the first time, a few CGs floating around the internet looks better than the actual cars. No wonder they make a big thing about the suspension. Hopefully it could bounce a few more sales back. The back look too familiar with Polo. This one exceed Bangle’s era as the ugliest BMW of all times.

If you could look beyond the skin though, the improvement is great, especially in the fuel consumption and power output. I’ve been waiting for the new 1 series but I guess I have to wait a few more years for the facelift

  • Robbo

Same haters who bagged Bangle years back out in force again.

  • PeterG

What about the fact it looks more squat and less top heavy than current model and that the front looks great compared to the hum drum VeeDub offerings including Audi. And thank God BMW has not succumbed to the dreaded ostentatious fairy lights like the other slaves to fashion Audi MB Porsche et al.
Besides the looks i bet it is great drive which is the most important factor cause lots of good and great cars are ugly eg Veyron .

  • http://www.caradvice.com.au/121865/2012-bmw-1-series-coming-to-australia-in-q4/ BuTcH

polo tail lights. old one was better, hope they added leg room to the rear seats

  • NLU

a bad copy of the new Polo. fugly is the keyword here.

  • Jo Blow

Straight in the fugly basket with the Lexus CT200h… With cars popping out of the seems in the segment, this car will flop…

    • Frank

Comparing this to the Lexus CT200h is way out of line- the Lexus is a trumped up Corolla Seca at best. At least the 1 series is fairly original and like it or not seems to continue its lineage with respect to the original form certainly aside from the ripped off VW/ Audi LED lights.

Shape wise, I like it although I think BMW need to do a total reprice structure. They need a better entry level priced car.

  • GooSE

I saw this article last night and absolutely hated the new look. Looking at it again now, it doesn’t look as bad. At least it has a bit of character, something the other new BMWs are lacking

  • Car Fanatic

Looks like BMW have hired some designers from Subaru. Shame about the looks cause it will be a cracker to drive.

  • carlos

I think the front headlights will be changed in the next facelift. Wait for it if you don’t like this.

  • http://www.nsmg.com.au Wil-son

Bring Bangle back from designing phones and funiture, or whatever it is he does!! Adrian Van Hooydonk’s just keeping the board of directors happy with his bland designs, oversized grilles, and freaky headlights!!

  • Pete

Kill it with fire – one ugly face!

  • Devil’s Advocate

Just when I thought they couldn’t make the 1 series any more ugly. As a big BMW fan it is sad to see BMW go this way…
