I’ve always loved these things, they really are bulletproof. Just a few questions though, does the transmisson tunnel still skew the pedals, and what are the main differences between this and the Sport version? Good review guys.
Anthony do you reckon a range rover would have been able to tackle this course as well?
it would have to be the short wheelbase land rover to complete all of the tracks.
but the rang rover is a very capable vehicle.
not sure what your looking for. but if your going to go extreme off road or very heavy off road the jeeps the go. short or long wheelbase are very good off road.
then you can do up grads and all that.
but if you just wont a 4×4 for a little fun for now and then. the rang rover will definitely satisfy + it has all the new features and usually are very high in there luxury.
hope that helped a bit
Yes Maria, the Rangie wouldn’t have an issue with its double diff lock and Terrain Response system.
I can second that, done a similar course with Land Rover Australia, took everything from Disco 3’s to Rangie’s, all capable, even the Freelander believe-it-or-not! Love that Terrain Response.
@Anthony Crawford: Great review by the way, thanks!
It probably has a lower ground clearence to the jeep…
Memo to Toyota this is how good a 3door 4wd can look not the abomination that you call the Prado 3door.
what about the old 3 door Rav 4?
for what?? Shopping??
looks wise, not performance
you sure the OLD Rav4?? its ugly as dogs balls!
Maybe include the fj cruiser in a three way shootout?? That’d be fun to read.
Fabulous review, I’ve only had my new Rubicon for a month & have had a chance to try out all of its 4×4 features, its terrific. Also have a 2001 model with several mods to enable competing, that goes anywhere and have to admit the new Rubicon is a fabulous vehicle on and off road, with that little touch of luxury that the old one doesnt. Is the track that you did the testing on, open to the public? Its getting harder and harder to find anything thats remotely challenging in the Sydney area.
I’d have a defender 90 over one of these
yep! 100% Defender 90
Serious?? at leat the Wrangler has upgraded there interior and thrown in a few more creature comforts, unlike the defenders 1985 throw back! 100% Jeep!!
It’s a Land Rover thing… same with Jeeps, you either love them or hate them!
well this is a jeep article so the LR lovers can bugger off!
Great write up. Make sure you check out http://www.ausjeepoffroad.com for all the latest on Jeeps in Australia – Your one stop resource for everything Jeep in Oz.
3door Wrangler, 3door Grand Vitara and also jimny Sieera, and 2.5 door FJCruiser are the best 2-3 door 4X4’s on the market today!
3 door Grand Vitara is NOT good, its barely capable at all these days, they where acceptable in the past when they had the live rear end, but not now days. The Jimny Sierra is good for one thing and one thing only, driving on the beach, the rest of the time its a HORRIBLE little car…
tru, dont ever find yourself drivin a sierra on a windy day!
Suzuki GV FTW For Teh Win!!!!!!!!!!
45 large for THAT? Horrible to look at and equally as bad on the road plus terrible resale…I’ll take a 2nd hand Prado / Cruiser anyday thanks
That was a great review CA you really got it dirty. Good Job, shame about the lack of oil burner in this mode1! And shame there is no where to drive this amazing vehicle off road near Sydney.Did it leak as some have complained about? President Obama, yep the President himself just visited the Jeep Toledo Assembly – home of the Jeep Wrangler. Toledo workers have apparently won just about every award over there when it comes to quality and productivity. Apparently, the President is going to use the work improvements done at Toledo as a prime example of why the US decision to save Chrysler and GM was the right one. But interestingly, last month the Jeep brand posted a 55 percent sales increase. All five Jeep brand models contributed to the increase by posting year-over-year sales gains. Jeep Wrangler sales last month in US were 10,008 units, increase of 4 percent compared with May 2010 (9,634). The all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee posted a 192 percent sales increase in May (192% increase !), compared with the same month in 2010.
Don’t hold back!
I have to agree on the lack of a diesel being an issue. With a diesel/6 speed manual and a tow capacity up around 3000kg Jeep would get my money next year for a planned trip around Australia. Just like the new FJ cruiser I love the styling and rugged nature of the vehicle but no diesel means no consider and that’s a shame!! I’ve always loved the styling of this car ..
Jsut 2 open questions
Firstly for a 3.8 lt petrol at 148Kw sounds under powered compared to 4 lt 193 Kw of Navara.
And has anyone pulled anything with the new jeep
I like to get away but most driving done on black top either for work or getting and from the fun places
There’s no way the fj40 could do any of that
LOL @ rent jeep …… your joking right ?? cruiser would eat it up !! not sure where these tracks are head a couple of hours north of sydney ill show ya a few tracks
