Mazda6 Coupe and Cabriolet?

April 15, 2008 by George Skentzos

Mazda is planning to heat up its Mazda6 range following the poor performance of the sedan and wagon variants in Japan.

Mazda6 Coupe and Cabriolet?

This will include the addition of two new models – a Coupe and Coupe Cabriolet, as well as a high performance model which will take the Mazdaspeed Atenza namesake.

The new models will be based on the sedan chassis, with the BMW 3-series squarely in its sights as a benchmark for both build quality and choice.

Comprising a sedan, wagon, cabriolet, coupe and high performance model, the new and improved Mazda6 range will mimic that of the BMW 3-series.

This contradicts earlier reports that the Mazdaspeed6 – or Mazda6 MPS as it is known in Australia – would not be continued into the next generation.

Mazda are also planning a high performance derivative of the highly successful Mazda2, which could possibly resemble the Mazdaspeed Demio concept revealed at the Tokyo Auto Salon.

So when are they planning this?

Anybody think the atenza will be a rotor?.. that would be nice..

btw.. keyword: integra – has this car dissapeared or what?

  2. Greg says:

@ Crouchy: Integra is no more. JDM Civic Type-R has replaced it.

  3. o says:

oh man i love that name atenza i wish it was called that here even better is axela for 3.ANyway if mazda does make this car and pull it off for a STARTING PRICE OF AROUND 50K then they will be even more succsesful and probably have the record for most styles of a single car i think the bmw 3 has it now with 4 styles

  4. VW_Freak says:

Ah Mazda, that’s better news! 2-door 6 in a MPS variant would be interesting. A rotary in a 6? Hmmm… hey, maybe they’ll bring back the 70’s (ala 808 = RX3, 929 = RX4, etc) maybe rotary 6 will = RX6? MPS2 will be a weapon! Wonder if TuRD will do a TuRD Yaris to go up against the MPS2?

  5. B///M3 says:

Hah, no wonder the sales suck…thats beacuse the styling of the new 6 sucks! Why would they introduce high performance version of the gay mazda 2….who would buy that? If they introduced 6-cylinder turbocharged version with RWD or AWD of the new 6, the sales would probably go up and then they would have the slightes chance of competing with the ultimate driving machine.

  6. BMWsauberF1 says:

using that logic then the mazdaspeed 2 could be deemed a rx5? supposing the mazda 2 is a replacement for the 121 and the rx5 was a rotary powered version of a 121. but a 121 of the day was a completely different car to what the mazda 2 is today. a rotary powered 6 would be sweet, but its impossible because all mazda 6 are FF/AWD and all rx models are strictly FR, unless mazda changes that which they won’t

  7. BMWsauberF1 says:

I think the 6 coupe looks pretty good, but i doubt it will make it down under. If we dont get the accord coupe i cant see us getting the 6 coupe

  8. Carl says:

Looks like another winner for Mazda!!!!!

  9. Peter says:

    Cool… the “MX-6″ is back. :)

If the lineup doesn’t do well in Japan, it will everywhere else in the world. I am a fan of the new 6.

I hate to say it, but the front reminds me of the last generation Camry Sportivo. :P

  10. Dlr1 says:

A rotary version is the most stupid thing i have ever heard. Imagine that, a mazda6 that consumes 15L/100km with no low down torque, fitted to an auto box and needs a full engine rebuild at 150,000 kms. They’re not even willing to put it under the hood of an MX5, let alone a mazda 6. & now they’re cloning camry sportivos.

  11. Captain Mainwaring says:

To bring you up to speed BMWSauberF1, the Accord Coupe is made in the US and is left hand drive only, that’s why it doesn’t go outside North America. If this Mazda is made in Japan it will be right hand drive, so there’s no reason why it couldn’t come here if they saw a market for it.
Not surprised the new Mazda6 isn’t selling well in Japan. It doesn’t look like a shipping container with windows.

  12. o says:

i love the mazda 6 its beautiful

LOL!!! Yes, the blubber munchers do love square boxes, don’t they?

  14. KJ says:

I saw a black one in a shopping centre on the weekend, at one of those ‘free’ competitions where they sell your details. Well anyway, from a distance I thought it was a Camry, especially the side on view! And what’s this I have heard that the service intervals are 10,000km?

  15. Myke says:

KJ that is such as insult!

  16. Duck says:

Yuck! Mazda dont build that Mazda 6 converible! It doesnt look good in covertible form! Wagon, hatch, sedan and possibly coupe only! But remember NO convertible!

  17. Phill says:

Looks good but needs RWD and a V6

  18. jamison says:

    looks good.

but 45K price range in Oz, if they do end up importing it down under.

at that price… no thanks… unless they use the RX-8 platform.. but why would they?

  19. Mark says:

We picked up our new Mazda6 Luxury sedan at Easter. It is a beautiful car to look at and even better to drive. We traded in a Camry Sportivo and there is no comparison. We also looked at the current model Camry Sportivo and Aurion Sportivo before deciding on the Mazda. As a previous Sportivo driver, I am sorry to say that the new models are plastic crap. The dash on my 13k Hyundai is made from the same plastics used in the Sportivos. Very ordinary for the price. If any of you have even driven the new model, you will know that it doesn’t need a V6. It has plenty of power.

As far as pricing is concerned, Australia gets ripped off from everyone, with the worst being the local producers. Take a look as the price of the Pontiac G8 GT selling in the US. It is an SS Commodore with a new nose. It sells for $26,910-$29,310US. So, they take an SS from Oz that sells for $50k here, take it to the US and sell it for $26,910. With the exchange rates at 0.92, there is no justification for the pricing variance.

  20. Carl says:

Mark, your right!! I think the Camry is agricultural compered to the new Mazda 6 and as far as getting ripped off by our car prices i don’t know how Holden can make a profit on the U.S. Commodores without admitting that they are ripping us off!!!!…..the only alternative is to claim that Australians are subsidising the Pontiac’s because we are too dumb to complain!!!

  21. jamison says:

    Mark

The Mazda 6 “Luxury” you claim… basically… explains it all. How much was it worth more than the Sportivo Camry?

I would compare the Presaria, which is the luxury model for the Aurion/Camry.

Interior plastic comparable to a Hyundai… well… I suppose thats an opinion and a half.

But the Mazda 6 is definitely a looker and Mazda has been pulling aces as of late. They had to though…. only way to break into the market.

The new “face lift” Honda Accord is also due… the new grille they have here for the U.S market is “uglier” than the previous one. The tail lamp is also “uglier” but again thats very based on opinion. Otherwise the car is good… its on the same price range as the Mazda 6.

The Camry is in a lower price bracket…. priced around the Fords and Holdens…. for Australia, Entry level Mazda 6 and Honda Accord is still a lot more feature friendly than the Camry. The Entry level for Honda and Mazda in the states is pretty pedestrian, but in Oz, since they are “packed” with features and higher grade interior material… but several thousands more expensive.

  22. Mark says:

    Jamison,

I was looking at the top of the line Aurion Spotivo ZR6 with leather interior ($42k+ ORC). I also looked at the Camry Sportivo. While I agree that the Camry is not in the same price bracket, the Aurion is. As far as the plastics are concerned, they are far cheaper and shabbier than the Sportivo we previously owned.

We also looked at the new Honda Accord. I like the side profile and could probably live with the front on appearance but from the rear it looks woeful. Sort of what I would expect for the US market. I also couldn\’t say that I loved the interior. The size is good but I worry about the quality given that it is not built in Japan. My wife and I have previously owned 3 Hondas and we love the quality and finish of the Japanese made cars but I just don\’t think the cars built in Thailand are of the same quality.

  23. Phill says:

They should put a v6 in it to distance it from the Mazda 3,maybe a 3 litre and make it RWD that would be fun.And what about the 3.7 litre v6 that would be more fun.

  24. Adi says:

I love this Mazda6 concept!! Make it happen please.. By the way if Mazda is consistent with their “Zoom-zoom” philosophy, they really MUST defunct their BT, 5 and Tribute. Those three series did not match with the philosophy. Hear this Mazda!!
