New additions to VW Golf Range

April 10, 2008 by George Skentzos

Volkswagen Australia has introduced two special edition Golf models, the ‘Edition’ and ‘Pacific’ offering a significant level of added equipment and safety.

New additions to VW Golf Range

Based on the current Trendline and Comfortline models respectively, the Golf Edition and Golf Pacific include Electronic Stabilisation Program (ESP), now standard across the entire Golf range.

The Edition is available with a 1.6-litre petrol engine or 1.9 TDI which yields fuel consumption of just 5.5L/100km with the 6-speed manual.

The Pacific uses the 2.0 FSI petrol engine producing 110kW of power at 6000rpm and 200Nm, mated to either the 6-speed manual transmission or the automatic 6-speed Tiptronic transmission with Dynamic Selection Program.

Also available with the Pacific is a 2.0 TDI unit, delivering 103kW of power at 4000 rpm and torque which rivals many large V6 engines, with 320Nm available from 1750rpm.

In addition to the equipment found in the current Trendline models, the Golf Edition adds:

  • Brake Assist
  • Electronic Stabilisation Program (ESP)
  • ‘Edition’ anthracite and grey cloth trim
  • Bristol 15” alloy wheels
  • Multi-function trip computer
  • Multi-function leather steering wheel
  • Leather gear shift knob and handbrake lever with grey stitching
  • Height and lumbar adjustment for front seats
  • Body coloured bumper inserts, door mirrors/handles and body side strips
  • Matt chrome decorative inserts in dashboard and doors
  • ‘Edition’ badge on tailgate

Similarly, the Golf Pacific features equipment levels inline with the Comfortline and Edition models, as well as adding:

  • Mugello 16” alloy wheels
  • Dual zone climate control air conditioning
  • Front sports seats with height and lumbar adjustment
  • Anthracite sports cloth upholstery
  • Multi-function trip computer ‘Plus’ (large format)
  • Front fog lights
  • ‘Pacific’ badge on tailgate

Good Fuel Economy! (i beat Frugal One!)

  2. Reckless1 says:

I think these are replacements rather than special editions.

The special drive away pricing in the first 3 months of this year was to run out the old stocks.

Is it a response to the strong AU $ to add more kit for the same money?????

  3. Frugal-One says:

One thing u cannot say bad about VW is the amount of models and combos on offer.Something for everybody…

Not me though, i will pass on this Czech/SouthAfrica built *German* vehicle.

Paying a premium in that sector i expect MadeInGermany

Anyway, new series VI Golf is out end of the year, hold off your orders guys!

    Cheers

Yes VAG certainly present a lot of options when it comes to engine choices which is great to see.

I’ve read that the Golf Mk VI has been quite a cost cutting exercise as the Mk V apparently takes almost twice as long to produce than others in its segment. So may be saying good-bye to some nice features like independent rear suspension ala Civic Type R. Will be interesting to see at the end of this year

Brendan, I’ve been wondering what’s going to get the chop, too. Hopefully, the cost-cutting lined up for the Mk VI is derived from factory and manufacturing processes in the main, as VW knows that if the the buyers see or feel something icky, they’ll be disappointed.

I read too that the rear suspension may be in for some simplification. That’s fine, so long as it feels the same or better. My Mk V rides like a Falcon with its multilink set-up, so regressing would be sad.

Maybe it’s things like the 3 position door stays with good old fashioned hinges like a HK Holden that are going to get the chop.

Certainly are a solid small car. VeeDubs always have been.

  7. Phillip says:

Reckless1, the strong Aussie dollar is a bit of an illusion, caused mainly by the weak $US and yen. If you look at the $AU against the euro you will see that it has been pretty stable for years. Around 4 months ago it hit a bit of a high of around 61.5 euro cents to the $AU but now it’s sitting at around 59.5 so there’s not much to really take advantage of.

In terms of the Golf, I just wish VW would give us more 3-door models, especially the TDi.
