Volkswagen Scirocco coming to Australia early 2012

By Brett Davis |

Volkswagen has just confirmed with CarAdvice that the sporty Volkswagen Scirocco will be heading to Australian showrooms. The sleeker, swoopier Volkswagen Golf-derived hatch will be unveiled at the Australian International Motor Show in July and then go on sale locally in the first quarter of 2012.

The only model to enter our market will be the top of the range ‘R’. The Scirocco R will replace the three-door Golf R. It will offer the same 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder as the Golf R as well, producing 188kW of power and 330Nm of torque.

Unlike the Golf R three-door, the Volkswagen Scirocco R will be front-wheel drive. It will come in both six-speed manual and six-speed dual-clutch DSG forms, and come equipped with the Golf GTI’s ‘XDS’ differential system to maximise front-paw grip.

Pricing for the new model is yet to be confirmed, however, expect price tags to fill the gap between the top-spec Golf GTI ($42,990) and the entry-level Volkswagen Golf R manual five door ($49,990). This gap will left by the soon-to-be removed Volkswagen Golf R three-door ($48,490).

We’ll be sure to bring you full details on the definite Australian specifications and pricing as soon as possible, and provide full coverage of the Melbourne Motor Show unveiling in July.

  • Able

Fffiiiinnnnaaaaalllllyyyyyyy!!!!!!! Good on them, and at that price it will actually be good value too!

    • macca

… and it will sell out, and in typical VW form there will be a 12 month waiting list due to not enough stock..

      • Trump

Makes perfect business sense to say its not coming, sell plenty of the less desirable Golf to all those who want a premium hatch, then bring it in later when exchange rates are favourable and make a packet on additional sales.

  • Luke

I totally agree Able. About time!

What an amazing little car. Goodness.

  • http://Telsa paulb

    Good looking vdub,did i say that.lol

  • Car Fanatic

About time this was announced. Nice car VW.

  • Suntory Time

Looks like a two door Golf that’s fighting some horrible infection… or maybe, silly looking squashed jelly bean?

    Can’t decide.

    • Golfschwein

Oh dear, looks like you’ve been thumbed down by…ENTHUSIASTS!! :)

      • Suntory Time

The great thing about being thumbed down so severely, is that people can’t help but to click on your post :O

And by enthusiasts, do you mean IT guys?

        • dailydriver

          hahaha good call!

  • Ima Hogg

YES FINNALY. The only Volkswagen I would buy finnaly thankyou Vw Aus

  • mrxandthexfactor

FINALLY!!! Better late than never. But if it came earlier, sales would be shooting out of the roof.

  • Midi

Saw this car in Europe and it looks amazing!! If u think it looks good in the pictures it’s 10 times better in the flesh! Can’t wait :)

  • UMWHAT

oh, only front wheel drive? i’ll take the golf r then, even if it looks boring

    • http://www.caradvice.com.au race car driver

Golf R might say its awd but at end of the day its front wheel drive as well, golf r drive’s around town/city using 100% front wheels for less fuel use , if u had a data logger u would be lucky for the rear wheels to be used 10% of the year, thats for australia only cause if u lived in europe where it snows that’s different story it would be used every day , Another reason why the mk6 gti quicker around corners with 140kg less weight.

      • Don Quay

Next time you post something, perhaps you could try using some punctuation and attempt the proper spelling. This ramble is just too difficult to bother reading.

        • Trouble

Typically, I find Grammar/Spelling Nazis much more annoying than people who struggle to spell properly.

Isn’t it a shame that not everybody is lucky enough to be blessed with the same immense intelligence level as you?

          • Al Juraj

Well, correct spelling and grammar does not require Mensa level intelligence, but at least be extra careful and have a bit of self-respect before typing something. When you post stuff, obviously you want it to be read by others. I know there’s no award for perfection here, but at least people would be interested to listen to what you have to say.

  • Catter29

    Wow! cool little car!

  • bangel

Just the right timing to get the GTI ready for a trade , nice ECU up grade will make it punchier than ever .

Superb looking car with that cool euro look.

  • Captain Nemo

50 grand for a bloated looking less practical VeeDud Golf you have to be kidding.

But i guess the cashed up Bogans will love it.

    • bangel

Gee voted down major zero , no one wants tired old dino OHV V8 yesterday cars with hard plastic interiors and fat bloated handling .

    • Able

Volkswagens are FAR too sophisticated for bogans, I mean, most of them park themselves. There isn’t a Holden or Ford product here that does anything comparable to that. Logic? No, not with you Nemo boy.

      • Captain Nemo

VeeDuds need to park themselves Abel because the bogans that buy them can’t park or drive for $h!t.

      • kris

VW is the new bogan mobile with the imminent death of Holden and Ford. Just look at the way they drive their GTIs as if it were a race car!

        • bangel

Gee someone who has a crystal ball who realises that the dino crummer and coon are finished .

No the new bogan mobile will be the CRUDE and the MALABORE , problem is can a bogan actually learn to drive a FWD GM product , maybe their girlfriends can teach them .

          • Philthy

They’ll have to learn how to power understeer into gutters instead of oversteering on rainy days :)

          • Golfschwein

Whoa man, shoulda seen it, I had her on full lock and she just kept on ploughin’ straight ahead!!!

      • dailydriver

        “ahem”…..
The 2012 Focus will have parking assistance in some markets.

    • kris

hahaha agree, VW fan boys are having a field day with this and that Passat being launched and all that. Pay 10,000+ more and get an Audi or a BMW like normal people!

    • Ima Hogg

Does Nemo actually know what a bogan is? A bogan is somebody that drives around in a vn or ea with no hub caps or alloys and drives it around through paddocks like a 4wd. They dont drive nice new cars they drive old Bombadores and Falcons. No bogan has 50 grand.

      • Al Juraj

Bogans are all about straights. Then it’s either understeering into a wall or oversteering onto a pole.

  • Chippies!

I saw one in Newcastle about a month ago, finished in a colour similar to the VY Commodore Hothouse Green, and it looked fantastic. It was very noticeable, probably a grey import.

    • andronicus

Yes there are a few that have been shipped across from NZ believe it or not!!!

Kiwi’s have had this model for a while now, AU playing catch up. Doesnt make any sense they would get this and not us.

      • dailydriver

That’s assuming the powers that be make any sense.
Take FOMOCO.au for eg. They will not bring in the 1.6 ecoboost for the new Focus. Why the hell not!?!?
VW has the whole gammut in the golf range here and now the scirocco!
I’d wait for the 2012 ST, or better yet the RS. The Revo system will leave the XDS in the dust.

  • Max Power

I saw one of these cars in that blue driving along wattle street in sydney, near the Wentworth Park Greyhounds, last week. The car looks amazing in the flesh and doesn’t seem to be short of get up and go. A real head turner.

  • Steve

i think the reason your seeing the odd one in australia is that they are on sale in New Zealand, and i know somewhere in sydney was sellijg NZ spec ones here.

  • SZQ

about damn time we got the scirocco…i know where i’m putting my money in 2012…lol

  • Car Fanatic

Yes Nemo, I’m a cashed up Bogan, I’m extremely well educated, have a nice house in Sydney and the UK just south of Tunbridge Wells, a wife with a pure maths degree and a Daughter in year six that will easily get into any of the three selective schools we have chosen.

We are a true bogan family, unlike your high classed well travelled family.

P.S, Nemo I knew I was a Bogan in the UK when we bought a BMW 325i tourer and a SEAT Leon Cupra R.

Oh how I wished I lived like you out in high class Penriff.

    • kris

and you live in western suburbs. Enough said!

    • andronicus

Well car fanatic you went overboard with proving your point on that one. Enough details to start cyber stalking you……and the people of Penrith have enough time on their hands to do that seen as they dont work.

Ok ok ok, that was in poor form, apologies to Penrith :)

    • dailydriver

Geez CF – got something to prove to some random on a car blog.
      Esteem issues?

FYI I know a few doctors and solicitors in Penrith. I know there are thousands of other professionals in the area.
Don’t let that stop your “extremely well educated” ignorance from showing.

    • Dan

It appears the one thing you’re actually missing is class, and it shows.

      Regards,
Cashed Up Bogan from Emu Plains (“Penriff” to you uneducated types)

      • andronicus

        well put

    • Peter

You really have to be pretty pathetic to boast about your lifestyle anoyomously on a car website.

    • Hung Low

Geez Carfan, with your little life story, one would want to be driving something more spectacular than a mediocre Diesel Golf hatch!
Does your wife use her maths degree whilst budget shopping at Aldi?… since you love keeping your money in Germany and all!

    • Alexander

Car Fanatic is probably the biggest troll i’ve ever seen. He’s obviously making that all up, judging by his anti-Semitic comments (scroll down), he’s just probably some insecure bogan. There’s no way he’s as successful and educated as he claims. Even if he is, he has absolutely no class what so ever.

    • TMG

Saw Kevin Bl**dy Wilson in Tunbridge Wells a few years back, was a sell out too, sooooo many Chav’s sorry Bogans, but good fun no less,

on Topic, do like the VW, should add something to the segment, alas a little late.

  • bangel

Brilliant fanatic , have a happy easter

  • The Realist

Just buy a 2009 BMW 135i – better than this in every way.

    • Philthy

Ah, the old new car vs second hand car thingy… the beemer is 30k more new. Nice car though.

    • Rex

Ahh, but what if everyone took your advice four years ago and nobody bought any new BMW’s then?

  • mjm

At last, will be very interested to see what the price will be. And it’s a coupe, it’s not meant to be especially practical.

And it looks like some people need to look up the definition of Bogan.

  • Don

I wonder how many people will be trading their Golf Rs for this?

  • Karl Krankschaft

You would think you’re under a bridge. So many trolls in Caradvice at the moment. Must be school holidays. Fantastic looking car shouldn’t been here already. And how is a VW a bogans car. No YOU drive the VN Calais with an exhaust note that sounds like an asthmatic yelling down a drain pipe YOUR the bogan not the guy in the VW. (nothing against vn’s just that’s the type of car Captain Numbskull would drive)

    • kris

yes, if you criticize VW, then you are a Troll! see you on a Toyota story.

  • Dennis

You can import these privately if your in a rush.

  • Qikturbo

Good news eventhough I’m not a VW fan at all.
The ONLY car in the VW lineup that looks modern, the Golf is looking SO out of date with that boxy look!

  • speedyace

i saw this in France last December -not sure how long they’ve had it for, but as usual Australia comes last on getting new models. Feel sorry for those who have forked out money to buy the current “R” model as it will be superceeded very soon.

    • andronicus

anyone who has bought the newest version of the Golf will have an old model soon not just the R buyers.

dont forget this generation was a stop gap of the old/current model and chassis and the brand new one thats been built from the ground up. think its due late 2012 here right? mid 2012 in EU???

CA had some photos or scans a few months back of it.

    • andronicus
      • speedyace

thanks. BTW when will VW introduce a 5/7 series competitor? Has anyone got some gossip on this?

        • andronicus

They have the Phaeton o/s but think closest we will have here will be the Passat which is more a 3 series competitor.

          • dailydriver

Passat is more akin to 5 series.
            Jetta is 3 series.
            Phaeton 7 series.

        • Phil

Why would they do that when they have Audi?

          • andronicus

Jetta isnt a 3 series competitor lets be honest. Its more like a classed up Corolla. Smaller than a 3 as well.

          • dailydriver

So andronicus, what you are saying is you’ve never been in one?
Go check them out. Also have a look at that cavernous space they call the boot. Although be ware, you might feel a little silly after you do so.

          • andronicus

Daily Driver, hate to tell you this but I owned a 2006 1KM Jetta in White which I traded in for an Accord Euro. As a previous OWNER of the car in question, I can tell you without doubt that I am not feeling silly for my comment. I think that ball is well and truly in your court now.

Also, read the CA review on latest Passat where they clearly compare it to a 3 Series and also C Class.

And if you want to question anything else I may have owned, I currently have an Accord Euro and recently bought a new Mazda3 SP25. Let me know if you need some feedback on these cars.

          • dailydriver

So it would seem you know a lot about the Jetta. The only conlusion I can think of is you must know very little about the 3 series.
I have driven both and a workmate owns the current jetta.
My conclusion is they are in the same category for size and perfomance (aside from the perfomance BMs). Admittedly the BWM is regarded as a premium product whereas the Jetta is a mid-range.
As a previous model Passat owner and having driven recent 5 series BMWs, I can tell you size wise they are very similar. What surprised me most is they have very similar NVH levels.
Regarding the Accord Euro and SP25 – share to your hearts content as I know very little about either.

          • andronicus

dailydriver, my old man owns the new diesel 3 BM. Had the pleasure of looking after it while he was O/S, so very familiar with both.
The BM IS a premium product, the Jetta is…..refined middle range option.

Cant really argue NVH levels in 3 to Jetta; with a diesel powerplant in the front as always bound to be louder unless there is an equivalent comparison, although that been said the D is rather quiet in the new 330.
I firmly believe after owning and/or driving both models the 3 series from BMW is slightly more refined and a better comparison to the level of kit and luxury you would find in a Passat….something that was mentioned in the review of the latest Passat right on this very website. The Jetta meanwhile is a little old hat and hopefully this will be corrected once the forthcoming model is released. As it stands at the moment it is more like a fancy Corolla.

I think we are going to have to agree to disagree on this one…

  • rob

Interesting that they’re not bringing out the standard Scirocco here. Guess it would impact sales of the Golf and Polo too much.

I have a Golf R. Won’t be trading it in for the Scirocco mainly because I need the space and practicality of a 4-door. But hard to deny the Scirocco is a better looking car. Though I do like the fact the Golf R is still slightly quicker ;)

I wonder how many people will think twice about buying a TT now?

  • TW

I saw a few in Thailand end of the last year…. It looked awesome…..

  • Jamison

Ive seen this in Japan, its not bad at all. But in all honesty Golf R or Golf GTI is better value for the money.

And a bit late in releasing to Australia… and typical VW Dealership will only order a small amount to KEEP DEMAND high hence.. people cant bargain down from its over inflated price….

    $60,000 Drive away….

  • macca

interesting that it’s FWD only.. a lot of power for just the front wheels.

    • bangel

My GTI has same power , no problems , just cannot do bogan burnouts and donuts

  • chook

66 years after world war 2 , and hitler is still getting his revenge , and the yuppies are falling for it !! . Yes ,vote me down , i dont care go on !!

    • Max Power

Maybe VW should bring out a special Edition, SS Golf, only available in black.

      • bangel

No the bogan holden has rights to the SS name

    • T

So it would be fair to say the Japanese are too?

  • Jon

Love that car, mine is new GOLF TSI118 with sport-packs and sunroof, still love it. :)

  • nemo

I’ve waited ages for this and now I think the Megane RS will be my next car. You are to late VW Aus

    • nemo

      to=too

  • Car Fanatic

I’d buy one in black with red Brembo brakes if they called it the Scirocco Gestapo. Then I’d drive it around ST IVES

    • chook

So well said…..and as the name is translated from german …folks wagen … a car specially for Germany . We dont need em here . Come on yuppies , i need votes….red ones are fine !!

    • Alexander

You’re disgusting. You claim you’re so well educated and successful, yet you have the attitudes of a true, blue, ant Semitic Bogan. Hating against Jews? You’re swine and you disgust me. You couldn’t possibly be as highly educated as you claim if you spend your days trolling on a car news blog. You belong in the gutter.

      • Alexander

        * i was referring to Car Fanatic, not Chook in the above comment

  • Octavian

Great, now we can finally order a very cool VW direct from VW.

  • MINO X

In the end.. it’s all V-Dub-LOVE!

  • Octavian

I can’t believe people are still relating VW with Hitler, it’s been privately owned for more than half a century. Anyway, no one ever mentions of the Mitsubishi Zeros that bombed the hel out of Darwin. Lest we forget, but we should’nt be just one-sighted either.

    • bangel

What they forget is that both GM and FORD owned factories making cars and trucks for war production in germany up until the end of 1941 .

No doubt some of their trucks transported poor souls to the concentration camps .

Most sane people would ignore those stupid inferences towards VW

      • Hung Low

        Who built the CAMPS Idiot!

        • bangel

Yes using FORD and GM trucks

    • chook

I didnt forget about the zeros…..its just that were talking german not japanese on this site . Most countries put their home made product first , some unpatriotic australians being the exception . It comes down to our individual care factor . Now , especially on Anzac day , why dont we give a thought to the troops who wanted australia what it used to be , and not what it is now . Sure the war is long finished , and the germans and japanese people cant be held to account for the actions of their parents , but had japan and germany won the war ,do you think that todays japanese would be giving our country back to us ….of course they wouldnt !!

      • G

If you’re going to bring WW2 into the discussion ponder this: Both Germany and Japan had foreign occupation for decades yet still managed to innovate better than the local car industry and the occupying forces.

I’m sure our diggers didn’t go to war to protect some so-called Australian (but really foreign owned) car manufacturers that require government handouts, incentives, and protectionist taxes to remain afloat. People should be able to buy the best car for their dollar, if that is a foreign car than so be it. You do a disservice to the ANZACs for even bringing them into this discussion.

        • chook

Im standing up for what they would do ,preserving australias identity , unlike you,….trying to justify your actions . Its been said that after the war the RSL clubs frowned on people who tried to park japanese or german cars in their carparks . Next anzac day march …..watch for any Landcruisers in the parades . That too would be an insult….same as u !!!

  • Car Fanatic

Despite what Hitler did, the Germans had in general the best equipment. VW’s are good cars and I don’t care what war references are made toward them, I will continue to support a company that makes products that make me happy.

    • Hung Low

You sound like one of those infomercial freaks! Shame on you!

    • andronicus

probably best if you just stopped talking for a while Car Fanatic.

  • Octavian

I greatly appreciate what our soldiers did to protect our country. Likewise, I greatly appreciate people remembering our previous country owners, the Aborigines, and what they had to endure with White “settlement.”

I’d buy a Holden if it looked and went like the Scirocco, but it doesn’t exist, yet?

    • bangel

Spot on OCTAVIA , respect .

Your right there will never be a holden that looks this cool , the dino is dead .

  • guru

i just came back from a trip overseas, saw this car in the showroom for sale for $36K in Dubai. must admit this peice looks better than the gti. wish it has the gto engine though

  • Car Fanatic

Andronicus, I’d hate to break the news to you but the Passat and the BMW 3 series aren’t in the same size class. The Passat sits between the 3 and 5 series so can be compared to both.

The 3 is shorter by 230mm and the 5 longer by 124mm. The 3′s front and rear tracks are narrower, the 5′s wider. Both Bimmers cost considerably more but price difference are that much better to drive.

Oh and finally, while CA did a comparison of the Passat and 3 series, you’ll find just as many comparisons between the 5 series and Passat as the 3 series and Passat.

    Next time do your homework.

  • Car Fanatic

And as I can see from Alexander’s rant, it doesn’t take much to get the young lad fired up.

    Hahaha, you’re funny.

  • G

I despise hatches in general but I could easily live with one if it looked as nice as the scirocco. Although, AWD would be better in my books.

  • Car Fanatic

Al’s correct, you Bogans only care about Quarter mile times and RWHP.

  • dailydriver

If there is one thing I can say about people’s comments on this blog it is, they sure take themselves seriously!
That is, of course, until you point this out.
Then they are all like – nah I’m not that serious!

  • Words of Steak

Its nice but it is a posers car for Golf gti drivers who can’t affort an m3 and think there not getting looked at enough.

  • bangel

Na you buy a crummer for posing like an ass , ideal for traffic light drag racing , burnouts and donuts .

  • T

I can’t believe the crap i’ve read here – it’s about the car nothing else… it’s nice to see a manufacturer regardless of origin that has created a unique looking car for a change, rather than being dished up the same old.

  • Andrew

Soooo want one. It’s going to be hard to resist.

This might sound like heresy, but what if I don’t want the R version? What if I just want the normal one that has the same engine as the GTI?
What if I want those awesome turbine rims?

  • LOLWUT

I’d wait till late 2012 when NEW sports coupes are released and announced for Australia.

Sub 40K price range and better looking than the Sciroco… which is nice styled but fcuk VW dealers and their smug yuppy demographic here in Oz.

    • My Cars Called T-Rex

Id take a new Toyota FT-86 over this anyday.

  • chook

Front wheel drive is the manufacturers way to cut corners on production costs , and then use the excuse of slight improvements in fuel usage to market them . Why is it that all the elite manufacturers like Aston , Lambo ,Ferrari ,Rolls etc and so on all use rear drive , coz dynamically it makes sense…..the front tyres arent expected to steer and also drag the thing around , the load is shared . Therefore consider that we have the option to have front drive for inside 50 grand.
