Melbourne Motor Show: HSV W427

The GM LS7 engine has made its official debut in the HSV range, with the impressive W427 - boasted as Australia’s first true supercar.

Melbourne Motor Show: HSV W427

Its 7.0-litre V8 engine develops an incredible 370kW and a stump-pulling 640Nm.

Topped off with 20-inch alloy wheels and a carbon-fiber lip spoiler, the W427 will be hand built at a rate of 4 per week.

No word yet on final pricing, however expect north of $125,000.

    A lot of money for a commodore. Pretty prediactable from HSV, don’t engineer the engine itself rather just grab whatever the Corvette has. Must say at least Holden had a go with the coupe but still its just a 2 door commodore. I bet Holden were thinking “Hey we did this 10 years ago and got huge amount of attention lets do the exact same thing”

    So the W427 (obviously uncle Tom had something to do with that stupid model name) is going into production? No wonder they’ve put $125000 on the thing, they’re not gonna sell many so probably have a big profit margin.

    Wouldnt it have more sense to call it a GTS-R, they didnt have to paint it canary yellow but just would of made more sense.

    Wow, what a fugly car. I’m quite a fan of the rest of the E series range - Clubbie, Grange and Maloo et al (apart from the silly black grille piece on the GTS). This looks ridiculous, totally tasteless

    At least it will be feral in a straight line and shouldn’t be too bad in corners, although I wonder what sort of tyre / TC package they have for it as it will probably have similar issues to an E63 AMG - plant it in a straight line in the wet even while doing 60km/h and it will struggle to get all that torque to the pavement.

    Apparently they are taking it to a special test facility (ice rink or something like that) in Sweden to calibrate the stability control. This I don’t get; they figure that if it can get traction on ice then it’ll have traction on tarmac - true, but won’t it just be all wrong? Why not just get it right by testing it on wet/dry bitumen?

    Mean looking car for a commodore…. yes it does nearly have the power of a Super car.. but i doubt it will go like one…. Super cars need to do less then 4sec to 100km/h and also need to go faster then 300km/h standard… all of this needs to be done while all standard… no tuning or nothing or its not a supercar.

    I’m glad Holden built this, it needed to be done. But I’m not very fond of the wheels, especially compared to the spectacular examples found on the HSV GTS itself. I don’t actually mind the front end at all.

    Poor Ford and FPV. Unless they have some giant engine that they plan to slip into their new Falcon then I reckon they’ll pretty pissed-off with Holden and their W427 and Coupe.
    Ford’s 5.4 litre motor is a good engine, but as they say “there is no substitute for cubes”.

    so if this things is a So called SUPER CAR… so this could compete with a GT40… or zonda or Lambo, F430…. for some reasons i dont think so… in still in the GT class of DB9,Mustang, RS4, M3… but not SUPER CAR… yes i think it would have so go dont get me wrong… but i could call it a super car… i would expect a proclaim Super car would have more then 370Kw… especially for a car that wieghts this much…

You are right, you could probably get more out of a 351 chev with a carby, but i bet your ass you wouldn’t be able to get anything approaching “refinement” out of that engine! It would rock and roll like a 20 year old hoover at idle and would vibrate like a.. well you know, at high revs. It wouldn’t be acceptable by modern standards, obviously HSV and GM had to make an engine that DOES conform with modern standards. Also i bet the carby 351 would use a HELL of alot more fuel then the 7.0litre motor in the HSV!! These things have to be taken into consideration Bav..

    Also how about that 640nm of torque? Again that is an impressive figure for a naturally aspirated petrol engine.. please remember that this car has 8kw and 10nm MORE then the 6.2ltr DOHC AMG built V8 that goes in $200,000+ Merceedes Benz’s.. surely you must concede that this is an impressive engine…

    I mean shit you will always get more out of an aftermarket engine but for goodness sakes lets compare apples with apples here, this is a PRODUCTION engine! That means not only does it have to conform with modern fuel economy and refinement levels, but it also has to meet strict emmissions targets! Again get that 351 carby engine to meet emissions standards!!!

    Refinement…….naaa depends on what the engine consists of.Roller cams are a lot smoother than solid lifter cams. Good set of engine mounts take away alot of the
    vibration anyway not to mention that I would think this would hardly be that smooth.You ever driven the 5.4 Boss,its got a real lumpy idle!

    Fuel economy yeah probably……..but I bet it cost a lot more to build this all alloy 7 litre job than a Iron block and headed 350 with the same grunt…….

    Actualy AMG have a new 6.3ltr same torque at 630nm but power up to 387kw.

Thats not my argument though, my argument is that there is no way that you could make a PRODUCTION 350ci V8 run on carbs that would have the refinement of a modern engine, the fuel economy of a modern engine or, and most imporantly, the ability to meet the latest emission standards as per a modern engine. In that sense, i am right! Man i love saying that to a women.. jokes!

    as for 350 or 351, seriously are you going to argue with me over 1 cubic inch? in actual fact i think you’ll find the chev motor was probably closer to 351 then 350 anyway, its the same as how holden said their 5.0ltr was a 5.0ltr when it actual fact it had been a 4.9ltr since the mid 80’s when they changed it from a 308 to a 304 in order to make it comply with the under 5.0ltr group a touring car regulations and therefore allow their group a touring cars to run with less weight

    and anyway, as i’m sure you are aware, with naturally aspirated engines you eventually get to a point where you can only get so much more power without increasing revs, now although the pushrod layout of the LS7 allows it to rev harder then a 7.0ltr motor has any right too, at the end of the day all that reticulating mass means it can only rev so far. The advantage of a big bore motor is not the ultimate power it can acheive, its the amount of torque it can get. Thats the reason AMG decided to go down the big bore route with its current 6.2ltr V8, they wanted more lazy torque for the autobarns

    My point is that just because it doesn’t cost as much as a Aston Marin Porsche or a Lambo doesn’t mean that the W427 is no less of a supercar when you consider -

    I’d say that the W probably stands for Walkinshaw as the V8 Supercar Spec Engine is hand-built by Walkinshaw Performance..

    I think they should have called it the HRT-427 like they were going to with the Limited Edition/Built To Order Monaro Coupe.

    The only thin missing is the VE HRT Rear Decklid.. which is most likely reserved for the GTS-R

    Anyways what i was saying is HSV are devoid of any engine development, every single V8 engine in a HSV since VT2 has been a crate engine. Imported and just stuck into the car. The VT2 GTS was a Callaway tuned engine. The LS1 & LS2 are taken straight out of Corvettes same with the LS7. Now look at Tickford & FPV every engine V8 & six has been developed by them. With the 200 & 220kw 5litre V8s then the fantastic handbuilt 250 kw 5.6 litre strokers. The Boss 290 was wholly developed in Oz as well as the Turbo 6 in Typhoon. I prefer something that is engineered and developed, not just bolt the biggest engine in the GM catalogue.

    And I’m not saying that the Tickford & FPV engines are australian made (apart from the 6) the Tickfords were Windsors and the Boss engines were developed from Canadian built V8s using Cobra R heads and locally made & developed Internals. But my point is at least the engine guys at Tickford/FPV developed their own engines, unique no other cars in the world have the same engines.

    And yes the W does stand for Walkinshaw. I’m assuming either Uncle Tom told them to do this or its meant to be a tribute to the original HSV VL Group A also known as the “Walkinshaw” To be honest I respect these original HSVs more than these modern commodore with vette engines bolted in. At least the VL & VN Group A’s were wholly developed here (apart from the UK windtunnel tested VL bodykit)

    The car is great. But the rest of u on this site are all messed up. 351, IS a FORD engine. The 427 in this car, The LS7, is a SMALL Block v8, not a Big Block. And for a car that does not have Forced aspiration, The LS7 makes good power. Remember, the LS7 is a pushrod design. Not OHV or multi cammed. Apart from the fuel injection and all alloy construction, this motor has roots embedded in the 1950’s. FPV or Ford, can’t do anything right in Australia. A 5.4lt Boss engine that wont rev over 5500!!! Why have a quad cam and Multi valved engine when it becomes asthmatic north of 5000 rpm? I say to all ford fans, Stick with the turbo cars. The V8 game has moved on, and its called the W427

    I have a supercharged ve gts making 450rwkw, with a total cost of $105,000. I think this W427 is over priced and doesnt look as aggressive as the gts. Big hype over nothing I reckon. My fpv Cobra is getting worked on with a twin turbo kit, so I cant wait to drive and compare it with the gts. Make your guess fellas! HSV or FPV ?????????

    Glen, although i get what your saying, at the end of the day, who really gives a shit? When your drivng along your fravorite road and you push down hard on the loud pedal do you honestly sit there thinking “wow i am so proud of the fact that my engine was made by a bloke in melbourne who peiced it together from a bunch of american parts” because mate thats all the DOHC boss engine is! Its a truck engine block with some spiffy heads and they are both from the Ford production parts bin, all ford australia did was pick out the bits they wanted, bolt them together and do a little bit of tuning. Nothing particularly special mate! It’s not like we are talkin about a ferrari engine or anything here, its just a parts bin special engine that frankly isn’t all that special!

    At least some f***ing effort went into the engine from the FPV, unlike HSV. I’m not saying the LS7 is a bad engine, far from it, the more cubes the better but i just appreciate what Tickford & FPV do & have done, they actually develop they’re own engines. And yes I know the block and heads are imported from north america but most of the internals are designed, developed & made here. And for me that makes the better car for me. Thats my opinion, Im allowed to have one.

    Thats a big reason why I liked the earlier Ozzy muscle cars, everything was developed here, you could not get the same spec engine in the states as what you could get here, personally I think thats something to be proud of.

    I know a lot of people couldnt give a rats how much work went into the car as long as the thing is fast (usually holden supporters) but hey lets see how the OZ developed Orion F6 goes against the “plonk in the vette engine” HSV when it comes out.

    i feel they would have been better refining the current motor a bit and then fitting the optional supercharger kit that they offer on them once they get off the boat in the middle east.

    I’d really love ford to do something similar for a public release.
    the only thing like this that they have done would be the last DJR320 that Dick johnson made and apparently it is quicker than a V8 super car around QLD raceway.
    and uncle dick didnt need to strap another litre of milk to the side to make it go better

    My five cents worth. I like to read these columns to see what people think, but on this one i want to add:

    Glen, yes this engine is a crate engine from Corvette, not developed and engineered here, but it IS an engineered and developed performance engine - like it or not. Who cares that Holden/HSV had the foresight to look at parts already available in the GM world to save costs. Sort of reminds me of how ford will discontinue the straight 6 motor in 2010 to pick up the duratec V6 from the US as the cost of engineering is prohibitive when you consider the $$$ return from doing so, given the small amount of vehicles they sell with it - Its called economies of scale. Spreading the cost across the largest number to reduce the price.

    I guess its the same reason the BMW and Mercedes (Arch rivals like Ford and Holden) are looking at teeming up to share technology (basic engines, flooplans, safety tech) to spread the cost and make them more competitive against the likes of toyota.

    Also, its interesting to read how people here bag the GM engines for their pushrod designs, but they fail to acknowledge that despite having DOHC mills, Ford is likely to replace their engines with pushrod based designs within the next 5 years to reduce costs, increase torque and simplicity, as well as being able to use smaller (physical dimensions) engines that fit more easily into engine bays than the BOSS motors do now.

    Agree with you there, for a majority of buyers they want to be impressed, meaning looking different not just yeah we tweaked this a bit, improved this a bit etc.
    When I showed the guys/girls at work the FG front to see their reaction, they werent impressed at all, some of them thought I was showing them the mondeo.

    Hehe yeah drop it in a kit car would be madness, I remember top gear, Jeremy took the Civic TypeR powered atom, that was nuts already.

    The ZR1 Chevrolet Corvette supercar! this was the engine in the gts-r motor mag a amazing 463kw (620hp) and 807nm of torque.
    It would of toke hsv atleast 12 months to devolp this engine in the ve, anyway the zr1 will be out in 2009. With a max speed of over 200mph and 0-100 between 3.2-3.6 seconds. This could be one day a ve because it is basically a modified version of the LS3 which will be in the hsv range in june.

Having had an oppitunity to drive a 300kw hsv it has plenty of “caravan pulling power” it was dry and fun to where we had to go and wet slimey and not much fun on the way back so unless hsv have added 4wd to the system this car it should be fun on a wet road, 380kw or 1/2 a veyron in a taxi body!
    Power to money value is good, goto calsales and see what you get for $150000 (the latest estimate on pricing)

    Remeber the motor mag of the hsv gts-r with that amzing engine from gm? well the fastest ever production car from chevrolet the zr1 covette supercar, with 463kw and 807nm of torque and 0-100 in the low 3 second mark, this car is quicker than the ferrari 599 porsche 911 gt2, ford gt and the lambo LP640 with a top speed of atleast 200mph (322km/h). the main reason why hsv did not produce this because it would of toke atleast 12 months to devolp. anyway this new chevy is going into production in 2009. this LS9 engine is a modefied version of the LS3 which will be in hsv’s by june with 325kw and 580nm of torque. hsv also have the LSA which has 410kw and 750nm of torque it is similar to the ls9. HSV have the balls to produce this in the future as seen with the 427 and the 300kw hsv gts in 2001. The question is does fpv have the balls to produce similar figures because gtho is just speculation.

    Ford don’t have a hope of competing with this car or the LS9 going into future VE platforms. It would not matter if the there 5.4 did have more Kw’s, it simply does not have the torgue of the LS2/3/9 or L98, maybe on paper but not in the real world. There is no torque in them down low, there weak point. This is varified by all the Australian magazines. No current Ford 5.4 V8 in the BA/BF has out gunned the LS2 or L98 for perfomance and pulling power. It will not be any different when they put that heap into the old/new FG chassis.

The Commodore W427 is yesterdays technology. just like the V8’s killed off a lot of what Europe had to offer in the 60’s now the turbo diesels of Europe are going to kill off a lot of what American V8’s offer. Oh yeh, I noticed that the new Q7 is 6 litres / 368kw and 1000Nm. There are going to be those who say, well how much do these cars cost? All I can say is the new Chrysler C is offering a top shelf turbo diesel from Mercedes for under $70,000 which goes like a rocket and uses as much fuel as a Holden 6.

    Mate did I say everyone thinks it looks like every car? no I said a few thought was a Mondeo and overall were not impressed.

    No I actually work for the bank, these people probably represent mundane everyday people than us car lovers, and dont appreciate the extra steps Ford has taken with their car. The fact that slightly different than the outgoing BF shows that first impressions didnt stack up too well, likewise when I went to the motor show on Sunday, It seems people floated around the holden stand more than Ford. With me overhearing a number of people going looks the same… etc.

    No doubt Im impressed with the interior build of the car and if Mechanically it lives up to what they say and I had the no discount through my mate at Toyota I wouldve opted for the the new falcon in leather trim for sure!
