Seems like a nice car but would rather a diesel VW Eos. It’s little less in your face. Alborz, I think you might mean ‘tall poppy’ syndrome :)

I always enjoy reading reviews of BMW products – always glowing with adoration, usually filled with traces of desire.

Yet, the more I read these reviews, the more apparent it becomes that none of these reviewers have driven these cars long enough to venture beyond their honeymoon phase.

Take the Mini Cooper S, for example. Yeah, it handles fantastically, and is a pleasure to enjoy both outside and in. But that’s only half the story with this car.

Some things are minor – like how despite the fancy dash and buttons, everything outside your immediate field of vision is constructed cheap plastic. Maybe you will find the reminders to be cute and in character with the car… until you’re approaching service time, and you dare to have less than 1/4 tank of fuel.

Maybe after another month or two, you realize that while the seats hold you in place, they don’t really hold up your spine over long commutes. Maybe, one day, you’ll even notice that the start/stop button will interrupt the window’s auto-closing (but not auto-opening), and that the passenger side window will not auto-close at all.

Soon enough you will be using your phone/satnav with intimate regularity to ensure you never have to meet another speed hump.

… and all that will be before the wear and tear from the overly complicated window/sunroof/convertible mechanisms that results on premature leakage in the seals… or the inevitable rattles of the cheap plastic parts of the interior from the unnecessarily harsh ride.

And I haven’t even got to the part about the attitude of the BMW sales people you’d have to deal with when you’re forking out a premium for such a car…

Amen to these comments – particularly the one about BMW salespeoples’ attitude.

It amazes me the things some people will put up with, when they’re being asked to fork out big bucks – like signing forms for test drives that commit them to paying for ANY damage to a car.

Stealerships used to be in the business of selling cars and some risk of damage was a risk inherent in that venture. Instead, a growing number of premium stealerships (BMW being the most notable) treat their prospective customers with suspicion and even make a test drive into a potential profit centre for themselves.

      Just bloody cynical and despicable.

Some of us are little more demanding and we vote with our feet. However, plenty of others will put up with this crapp and will be willingly bent over in the name of wanting to own one of these babies.

It’s a free country and each to their own. Equally, and consistently with such freedom, some of us will continue to voice our displeasure.

I totally agree with you. I will never buy a BMW because of all the reasons you just stated. Paying double the price of an equivalent size average car for an unreliable car. Thats BS.

I completely agree as well. My girlfriend was very keen on the cooper s, we took it for a test drive, both loved it. The bmw guys however decided to play hard ball on the price of the trade in. Then when i began negotiating, the salesmen’s manager got angry at me and accused me of wasting his salesmans time, lol!

I don’t think the salesman minded too much, because the majority of his “time” was spent trying to pickup my girlfriend. In the end we decided on a specced up Volkswagen Polo GTI, which we actually enjoyed driving more than the cooper S and it has infinitely more space in the back seats.

Good buy. Your money is well spent on the VW. It will be a great car for years. The Mini will be falling to bits ans so passe in 5 years….

I like them but there expensive.

I am in the process of using “the Configurator” to order my JCW Cooper S. Why oh why, have a bonnet air intake that is NOT used because the intercooler has been moved to the front of the car? This irelevant item is also nearly completely blanked off, giving rise to some additional drag at speed I would suggest.

The decorative blanked-off bonnet air intake might look pretty to some domestic buyers, but I notice the competition WRC Mini 2011 does not have one!

    I want a “clean” bonnet.
