Jaguar XJS gets modern makeover with help from Magnus Walker

British firm TWR Performance has unveiled the Supercat – a modernised limited-edition version of the classic Jaguar XJS coupe.

The Jaguar was given refreshed looks from designer Khyzyl Saleem, with help from famous Porsche collector Magnus Walker, but is being led by the team at TWR Performance – the revived company with links to Tom Walkinshaw Racing, which has a history of racing wins with Jaguar throughout the 1980s.

Limited to just 88 vehicles – with 1988 being the year the team won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in a Jaguar XJR-9 – the Supercat is powered by a supercharged V12 producing more than 450kW.

While the company hasn't announced the displacement of the engine in the Supercat, the original XJS used a 5.3-litre naturally-aspirated V12 producing up to 196kW throughout the 1980s, while the Le Mans-winning XJR-9 saw the engine increased to 7.0 litres to produce approximately 559kW and 828Nm.

But unlike the original XJS, which paired the V12 with a three-speed automatic transmission, the Supercat sends power to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual.

Despite images of the interior not being released on its unveiling, a tan-coloured cabin with bucket seats can be seen through the windows.

Meanwhile, the carbon-fibre wide-body kit is said to have been designed to improve aerodynamics for both road and race-track driving.

Fergus Walkinshaw – son of Tom Walkinshaw and the driving force of the revived TWR outfit – is said to have put together a team of engineers from McLaren, Ferrari, Porsche, Williams, and both Mercedes and Renault Formula One teams to develop the Supercat.

The Supercat is the latest in the growing industry of 'restomods' – classic vehicles that have been restored and modified using modern technology and manufacturing techniques.

Buyers can secure one of the 88 TWR Supercats with a £10,000 refundable deposit ($AU19,300), with pricing for the vehicle starting at £225,000 – or approximately $AU434,200 before options and on-road costs. Deliveries are set to begin in late 2024.
