2015 Nissan Murano revealed

The 2015 Nissan Murano completes a hectic period of new-generation activity for the Japanese brand’s SUV line-up.

Revealed on the eve of its public debut at the 2014 New York motor show, the Murano follows recently released versions of the Qashqai/Dualis, X-Trail, Pathfinder, Patrol.

The new Nissan Murano, the most design-focused on the company’s SUVs, takes some important styling cues from the well received Resonance sports sedan concept shown at the 2014 Detroit motor show.

Murano’s large, toothy grille has been shown the door, and swoopy curves have been ditched for sharper, more defined edges front and rear.

The refreshed Murano that was launched back in 2009 aimed to improve interior fit, finish and design rather than revamp the exterior, so there’s little doubt the styling has started to date.

This new Nissan Murano is a significantly different vehicle in a styling sense with headlights that look decidedly like the sporty 370Z, and a floating roofline that plays on a ‘jet-inspired’ styling exercise, according to Nissan.

Interestingly, Nissan claims these new features, such as the ‘V-motion’ front end, LED lighting and roofline, will be key elements of future design across the Nissan range.

New Murano gets LED headlights and taillights, which are both more efficient and more versatile design wise than either halogen or xenon. They also assist with keeping the design of the light housings more aerodynamic.

Sculptured body sides, a lower, wider and longer platform and lower rocker panels have all assisted in a 16 per cent improvement in overall aerodynamics from the outgoing model – down to a sportscar-like 0.31 coefficient of drag.

Inside the cabin, Nissan claims to have gone for a ‘social’ feeling with a sense of effortlessness, comfort and ease of use. Like a modern smartphone, which comes with no instructions, Nissan reckons we should all be able to operate a car intuitively.

Nissan’s NASA-inspired and so-called ‘Zero Gravity’ seats (familiar from Altima) make an appearance both front and rear in the cabin and there’s the usual array of technology you’d expect headed up by an 8.0-inch touchscreen central control unit. There’s also a serious reduction in switchgear and buttons, too, with 10 buttons on the centre console replacing the previous model’s 25.

Lift the shapely bonnet, and overseas models will feature the 3.5-litre V6 engine as standard equipment, delivering 191kW and 325Nm.

Nissan is claiming a 20 per cent improvement in fuel efficiency, thanks in no small part to the Xtronic continuously variable transmission and aerodynamic improvements.

Drive is sent to the front wheels – or all four – depending on how the vehicle is optioned.

For the UK market, 18-inch wheels are standard equipment, with 20-inch wheels optional across all models. Parking will be easier than ever before in a Murano with four onboard cameras and three radar sensors. These systems couple to provide ‘Around View Monitor’ and Moving Object Detection’.

On the move, both the cameras and the radars are employed to power Blind Spot Warning, Predictive Forward Collision Warning, Forward Emergency Braking, and Intelligent Cruise Control, which are all standard.

Nissan Australia corporate communications supervisor Chris Jordan has confirmed the new Murano will arrive in Australia next year.

“Nissan will introduce the all-new Murano to the Australian market in the second half of the 2015 calendar year, to be sourced from the Canton, Mississippi facility in the United States," commented Jordan.

"More information regarding Australian timing and specification will be confirmed at a later date".
