Extreme Rallycross is coming to Australia and CarAdvice joined Hyundai and World Rally Champion ace Chris Atkinson at a preview event in Sydney.
Popular overseas, the motorsport series is brand-new in Australia and round one will be held in Queensland on August 4, 2015.
Mixing traditional-style rallying with the craziness of Supercross and the stadium format of circuit racing, it’s one wild ride.
The list of drivers is yet to be finalised and the preview event was an opportunity for a raft of interested racers to get up close and personal with a sample Supercar Lite, which will be the top class in the Australian Extreme Rallycross series.
Chris ‘Atko’ Atkinson was on hand at Sydney Motorsport Park, not only to test the car for himself, but also to give us a thrilling joy ride.
This custom-built machine, with circa-230kW/300Nm has proven tempting to our country’s most successful rally driver.
The 35-year old loose-surface wizard telling CarAdvice he was excited about the upcoming series.
“I don’t know if I’m racing in the series or not yet… it’s still early days but [the series] has got huge potential,” Atko said.
“I think it’ll be great. I think it’s just something different for Australian motorsport and it’s a way of getting a rally-style sport to the people.
“It really is a crossover sport between circuit racing and rallying, which is pretty cool.”
Expertly sliding this light weight, all-wheel-drive howler around a multi-surface course is a task few can handle, let alone with a smile on their face, but Atko looked right at home.
Extreme Rallycross is growing in popularity and audience world wide and the sport has the backing of world motorsport’s governing body the FIA, in the form of the Word Rallycross Championship, and has been thrilling American fans since 2011 under the guise of the US-based Global Rallycross (GRC) series.
The appeal of these events is that they combine the motorsport action with a party atmosphere.
When the series makes its debut later this year, expect a DJ pumping out some tunes and fast and furious races.
