2019 BMW M2 Competition pricing and specs

Beefed-up coupe available here in October, priced from $99,900.

BMW Australia has confirmed pricing and specifications for the new 2019 M2 Competition, with the dual-tier range to kick off at $99,900 plus on-road costs.

The local division has chosen to offer the M2 Competition in both 'Competition Pure' and 'Competition' guises, much like how the 'standard' M2 was available in two trim levels. Additionally, the M2 Competition Pure is specific to the Australian market.

Headlining the specification sheet for the M2 Competition is a more powerful 3.0-litre 'S55' twin-turbo inline six that has been 'adapted' from the larger M3 Competition, tuned to deliver 302kW of power (@5250-7000rpm) and 550Nm of torque (@2350-5200rpm).

That's up 30kW and 85Nm over the regular M2, and the torque figure matches that of the M4 Competition.

When paired with the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, the M2 Competition claims a 0-100 sprint time of 4.2 seconds – 0.1 seconds quicker than the 'regular' M2.

However, the Competition isn't just about straight-line speed. The M2 Competition's various upgrades compared to the standard car are claimed to make it even more of a track weapon.

Things like carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) strut braces, playfree ball joints, a five-link rear axle, recalibrated locking M differential and stability control programs, a model-specific exhaust system with electronically-controlled flaps, and optimised aerodynamics all contribute to a more rigid body and a sharper drive.

Equipment highlights for the M2 Competition ($104,900) include adaptive LED headlights, front and rear parking sensors, model-specific 19-inch light alloy wheels, an 8.8-inch iDrive 6 infotainment system with Navigation Professional, a 12-speaker harman/kardon audio system, and the Driving Assistant pack which includes autonomous emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane-departure warning and pedestrian monitoring.

Unique to the M2 Competition is the new Hockenheim Silver exterior paint (pictured, $1547), while Sunset Orange metallic ($1547) has joined the range's option list.

The M2 Competition Pure ($99,900), meanwhile, won't arrive until "early 2019". Compared to the higher-spec variant, the M2 Competition retains the 19-inch alloys from the current M2, albeit with the Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres of the M2 Competition, a less-powerful audio system, manual adjustment for the M Sports seats with illuminated headrests, fixed bi-LED headlights, and the removal of keyless entry.

Buyers can cost-option the M2 Competition's new 19-inch alloys on the Pure ($1100), which are available in a high-sheen light finish in addition to a non-metallic jet black ($1600).

Additionally, a six-speed manual transmission with rev-matching function is available as a no-cost option for those who would rather change gears themselves.

"We expect the first ever M2 Competition to deliver even greater all-round performance. And with the Pure variant, we continue to offer a proper M experience at a strong price point," said Vikram Pawah, BMW Group Australia's CEO.

The new BMW M2 Competition arrives in October, with the M2 Competition Pure to follow in early 2019.
